Chapter 79: Traversing Through the Forest (1)

"Do you hear them?" Luciel questioned, stopping on one of the branches inside the forest.

He placed his hand above his eyes and squinted really hard, searching for the black car that was supposed to follow them.

"Yes, somewhere in the distance," Melisa replied, holding onto a tree a little bit further away from Luciel.

"This is the third time already," Luciel sighed in annoyance. They had to make frequent stops and search for them, which was a waste of time.

"Let’s go find them..." He added, sounding lazy at the chore they had to do again.

"Should we just go on without them?"

A little bit after Melisa spoke those words, a distant howling could be heard, mixed in with nearby growls and hisses.

Both vampires turned their heads toward the sound of the werewolves. While being far away, they still served as a reminder that they weren’t the most powerful beings around here.

"We have to protect them. Lead the way." Luciel ordered, placing his hand where his heart was supposed to beat as he clenched his fist.

Below his hand, he could feel the mighty beats of the vampire’s heart, working relentlessly. It was slower than humans but more efficient.

If something were to happen to the two, he wouldn’t be able to live with that weight.

"Fine." Melisa groaned, rolling her eyes before shooting at the tree that was in front of her, following the sound of the car.

Luciel went right after her when she started to move. He savored each fleeting moment while being out in the open.

He was enjoying the gentle breeze going through his hair, brushing his cheeks.

Even in his first hours after turning, he found this feeling liberating.

The only problem with all of this was Melisa. Ever since they had the dispute over going to save the children and sticking for the humans or not, the atmosphere between the two became awkward.

There was no hate involved, but they didn’t bother to talk much with one another except when needed.

"We are getting close. Do you see anything?"

Luciel stopped after hearing Melisa’s question, scanning the area in the distance.

There among the trees, he could see flashes of bright, yellow light, revealing the location of Alex and Scarlet.

"Over there!" Luciel exclaimed, pointing toward the light before taking the lead since now he could locate them as well.

They continued to traverse through the trees and once they got close, Luciel jumped down after getting a clear visual.

Luciel landed right in the middle of the illuminated area, wanting the two to notice his presence since the chances that they would notice him in the dark were slim. It was impressive that they could keep up for a short amount of time.

He could hear the powerful engine of the car on his left, mixed in with the sound of panicked honking!

Turning his head, Luciel’s crimson eyes gave off a creepy glow as they reflected the blinding light.

His pupils shrunk after seeing a black car that was approaching,

"Wait! Stop, stop stop!" Alex panicked in the backseat after seeing Luciel appear out of nowhere. He grabbed both seats, getting ready for the impact.

Scarlet, who was driving the car, clenched her teeth. She gripped her wheel tightly and started to steer before breaking, but Luciel got so close that it was questionable if she could avoid the hit in time.

The breaking sound could be heard as she hit the break with all her might, trying to stop in time.

The car and Luciel would survive with no problem, but she didn’t want to risk any injuries that might happen to those who were inside the car.

Seeing how the car was about to hit him, Luciel, Luciel leaped up, jumping over the car with a back flip before landing down in the crouching position. He placed one hand on the ground and dug his claws deep into the ground to get a better grip as he slid backward a little bit.

The car made a drift, doing a circle of 180° before finally stopping, leaving the trail behind.

Luciel stared at the car which gave him a little scare, not even thinking about how his body was getting more agile by the day as he was getting used to it. That stuff, along with most vampire abilities, became like second nature.

"Were you crazy?!" Alex shouted, stepping his foot outside the car as he observed his friend slowly getting up, whipping off the dirt.

Luciel stayed quiet. He had nothing to say in the defense of getting careless for a moment. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"As much as I don’t like the guy, I agree with him." Scarlet got outside as well, slamming the door behind her before making a fist and pointing at Alex.

"I swear, you are acting like a child sometimes." She added, glaring in Luciel’s soul.

"Well, a vampire reaches a mental maturity around the age of one hundred and twenty." Melisa added after jumping down next to Luciel.

She didn’t care about defending him, just wanted to point the difference in species.

’Huh, I guess you learn something new everyday.’ Alex thought to himself, shrugging with his shoulders before glancing at Luciel.

That knowledge did explain some stuff, especially his short fuse which he didn’t have before turning.

"Anyways, the river should be close, I suggest we go by foot now." Scarlet suggested. The bridge going across the river was very old and unkept since no one was using it.

The hunters didn’t dare to cross the imaginary border between two territories. The only exception was now since they were being escorted by two vampires and their strength unless they would get surrounded by a horde.

"Sounds good to me." Luciel replied, nodding his head.

"All right, but only if they will walk-" Alex couldn’t even finish his sentence before the two vampires climbed back onto the tree, looking down at them, "-besides us..."

Alex felt stupid for thinking that they would stop acting like vampires for a second.
