Chapter 78: A Little Snack

Scarlet was tapping her foot against the ground relentlessly, constantly glancing at her watch.

It was 10 pm now and they had an agreement that they would head at nine.

"Ugh, what is taking him so long!" Melisa complained, pulling her curly, ginger hair slightly.

Alex said that he had to get ready and take his weapon, leaving them to wait in front of the church.

Luciel was about to go and search for him, to see what was the hold-up but decided to give him ten more minutes.

After what seemed like forty minutes of wait, Alex finally appeared at the gates. "Sorry I’m late, I got a little busy."

As the chilling wind started to blow, it caused a rustling sound of colorful yellow, orange, and brown leaves.

The breeze carried a certain, woody fragrance of a man’s shampoo.

"Did you take a shower?" Luciel frowned once the scent hit his nose. His blood pressure started to increase after finding out why they had to wait for him for so long.

"No? What makes you think so?" Alex laughed nervously, avoiding eye contact. Luciel didn’t need his sensitive hearing to notice that he was lying.

Scarlet rolled with her eyes, wondering why she wasn’t surprised at this. "Melisa, I think I found you a dinner once we are done with the mission."

"Take him, he’s all yours." Luciel gave Melisa a green light as well while looking at Alex with half-open eyes, not feeling impressed by his actions.

"Perfect." Melisa licked her lips, rubbing her hands together. She wouldn’t mind having a little snack. Vampires always felt thirsty for most of the time.

"Wait, wait wait, hold on!" Alex waved his hand in front of him when he noticed Melisa’s red wine eyes flash for a second.

He wanted to explain himself, how he couldn’t go on a mission while being all dirty from that cleaning, but before he could say anything, Scarlet already turned around, opening the door to the driver’s seat.

"It’s time to go!" She ordered after sitting down and closing the door, lowering the window on the passenger seat.

Alex went to sit down in the back seat, but when the vampires approached the car, they stopped, not daring to get in.

Melisa had the honor to experience what it means to be inside an anti-vampire vehicle and Luciel saw how exhausted and sick vampires would get inside one.

"What’s wrong?"

Luciel and Melisa exchanged some looks, taking a few steps back. Even while being close to the car, they could feel pure Yang energy radiating around it.

Vampires were beings of the night, pure Yin creatures. And while being able to hold Yang in their bodies to cultivate and keep their intellect, they couldn’t stand Yang in its purest form. For them to endure it, it always had to be mixed with its counterpart.

That’s why they evolved to have humans as their food source. Not only did they have large amounts of Qi, but they also had both energies mixed together.

The hunters didn’t have access to that knowledge, not even Alex, who was familiar with Qi, wasn’t aware of the concept behind it. They all accepted divine arts, weapons, and equipment as something that hurt the vampires.

’Don’t tell me...’ Scarlet thought in defeat after watching the two slowly back away. She could remember what kind of effect the car had on Melisa and Luciel probably didn’t want to take his chances.

"Luciel, can’t we just go on foot?" Melisa suggested. They were vampires so they shouldn’t get exhausted or be too much slower than the car.

"Hm... We could." He rubbed his chin. And even if he could get into the car without any side effects, he would still take the foot.

With his body like that, he started to prefer moving it around more and more. It would be a shame not to put this powerhouse to good use.

"Will you be able to make the trip?" Alex asked, looking at Luciel. He couldn’t help but feel slightly confused for his friend who wasn’t a vampire for long.

"The better question is, will you guys manage to keep up?" Luciel grinned before turning his head toward Melisa, "Let’s go." He nodded his head, Melisa doing the same with a serious expression on her face before they rushed toward the nearby house, swiftly climbing up.

The car might be faster than them when going in a straight line, but once they reach the forest, they are going to be the ones with the upper hand.

The cars that hunters were using were expensive because of their special properties and materials used to make them sturdy, able to resist most vampire attacks. Ordinary cars proved to be too dangerous for this line of work.

There were also vehicles that could levitate, but those were reserved only for those who watched the world from the top due to the big dispersity in wealth. Those who had money lived a futuristic dream while those that hadn’t were forced to go back to the middle ages with Paradise being one example.

The rich enjoyed in giant skyscrapers while those in the third circle belonged to the slums, working for those with money just so they could survive.

’Just where did it go wrong...’ Luciel wondered as he observed the now empty, dark streets as he traversed across rooftops.

No soul could be seen, but he could still imagine the suffering the people were going through. Even as a hunter who lived in the middle circle, he didn’t have enough power to help them except by providing his protection.

"What’s wrong?" Melisa noticed that Luciel was in deep thought, constantly watching at the ground, "Did you sense something?" She asked, thinking that he might have sensed an enemy.

"No, it’s nothing, I was just thinking about something." He replied, stopping on the flat roof of a medium-sized building so he could check if Scarlet and Alex could still keep up with them.

A little bit further away, he could see a big, black car that was getting closer.

"Wow, they are fast!" Alex’s eyes sparkled as he observed Luciel and Melisa’s graceful, smooth acrobatics, with Melisa being slightly faster.

They weren’t just jumping and climbing around, but unconsciously putting up the show for the two with constant flips and impressive jumps over huge distances under the moonlight.

"Of course they are. They are vampires." Scarlet replied, observing the two as much as she could while driving.

"Just wait until they reach the forest." She added. With the constant sharp turns they were taking, it was already hard to follow them.

Alex continued to enjoy the show with the two vampires who relished the thrill of freedom, allowing the hunters to see that there was more to them, beyond being the bloodthirsty beasts that everyone thought they were.

Seeing Luciel doing tricks in the air alongside Melisa made one thing clear... He does not belong among humans anymore.
