Chapter 418: Engagement chaos (8)

Syaoran’s bodyguard helped a woman enter the villa, who was anxiously darting her gaze back and forth among the crowd of guests.

Zhuo Zihan stared at her as if time had stopped. It felt like he was transported back into time when Nuwa had been a part of life. The late night meetings, the laughter, the jokes, the banter, the small fights...everything came rushing back to him as if it was just yesterday.

He walked toward her slowly, his step unlocking a past memory for him. The same sense of disbelief and melancholy passed across Nuwa’s face too as her tears brimmed. The past years of separation had felt like a tornado but in the face of this moment, every last tear and anguish had seemed to dissipate.

Zhuo Meihui staggered back, shock and disbelief consuming her as if somebody had dropped her to the cold hell.

No...

How is this...

The same panic was etched onto the other faces too.

Syaoran smiled at them. "Do you remember this face?"

But instead of them, somebody else answered from the upper corridor of the floor. "It’s you!! You bitch is alive!?"

Hou Huan felt all the color drain from her face when Hou Jielun came hopping down the stairs. The first to stop him was Hou Tengqi, who was obviously trying to send him back to his room but Jielun had other matters to focus on.

"Get back to your room," he whispered through gritted teeth, his eyes blazing with a silent fury.

Jielun was indeed afraid of Tengqi. He might fight with Anming and be violent with him but toward Tengqi, he didn’t have the guts to even point a finger at him. Yet today, Jielun was in a completely different zone himself. The moment his gaze landed on Nuwa, the distant face from the past that he still remembered distinctly brought the anger and fury rushing back to him.

"It’s you!"

For the first time in his life, Jielun had ignored his eldest brother’s order and overturned him.

"You bitch is alive!?" He laughed maniacally as if he was intoxicated with happiness.

He hurried forward to grab her hand, but another hand grabbed his approaching wrist and pressed it so hard that his wrist bone almost snapped.

"Ahhh-Ahhh! What you are doing you fucker? Get out of my way! Nuwa!"

He stared at her with a certain glaze in his eyes that Zihan felt murderous instincts kicking into action.

Hou Huan quickly grabbed his arm and pulled him back. "Jielun dear. You should go back to your room. You must be tired."

Jielun glared at his mother and shook off her arm. "Why should I go back to my room!? Can’t you see Nuwa is here! That same bitch who rejected me and ran away from me! Won’t you do something? You told me that nobody can reject your dearest son! But this woman did! You promised me you will get her back for me!"

She froze.

Syaoran smiled. "Oh my. The climax came a little quicker than expected. I thought I would have to play this game a little longer with you, but your son cheated."

Zihan watched the Hou family with a cold fury that threatened to freeze this very house where they stood.

"Care to explain...what your son means? What is this promise he is talking about?"

Jielun rubbed his painful wrist and glared at him. "Get the fuck out of my way, Zihan! You are standing between me and her!"

The guests were too dumbstruck to grasp the situation. Nobody had really met Jielun in all these years. Though the world knew of the Hou family’s three sons, the youngest son had never shown his face to the public. But this wasn’t the face they had expected to see, completely different from his brothers Tengqi and Anming.

The temper and words that shot out of his mouth were nothing but filthy and poisonous. His gaze glinted with a certain hunger that many women instinctively found repulsive. Suddenly the notion that he had harassed Meng Rin before this engagement had started felt plausible to them.

If he was openly targeting Nuwa in front of the whole world, then what was to be expected from him within closed walls?

Zhuo Meihui’s knees wobbled as though the ground had been yanked from under her. She had always known Jielun was unstable, but to see him spewing filth in front of so many guests, about Nuwa of all people, was a humiliation that ripped her pride to shreds.

"Jielun, stop this nonsense at once!" she hissed, her voice trembling yet hard as she desperately tried to drag him away from the public view.

But Jielun only laughed louder and crueler. "Nonsense? Didn’t you swear you would bring her back to me? You said the Hou family always gets what it wants! You said your Jielun always gets what he wants!"

Gasps rippled again, eyes darting over to Hou Huan, who looked as though her carefully built empire was collapsing like falling dominos.

Zihan’s fists clenched at his sides. He stepped in front of Nuwa, shielding her with his body, his expression freezing. "If you so much as look at her again, I will break every bone in your body."

Jielun spat on the floor, his lips curling. "You think you are some kind of hero? She is mine! Always mine!"

He tried to lunge forward again, but Tengqi seized him by the collar and yanked him back, his gaze thunderous.

"Enough, Jielun!" Tengqi barked.

Yet no one missed the faint flicker of panic in Tengqi’s eyes, the panic that his brother’s ramblings had just laid bare more than intended.

The guests furiously whispered among themselves.

"So it’s true that Hou Huan really did cover for him?"

"To promise a woman as if she’s property? That is why Huayuan’s leader is here too!"

"And she kept him hidden all these years because of his sickness?"

Nuwa’s tears finally spilled, not from weakness, but from rage. She lifted her chin, her voice trembling yet fierce. "I would rather die than belong to a filth like you. You haven’t changed at all. You are still a piece of garbage as you were years ago..."

Her words landed like a thunderclap, silencing the hall and branding Jielun with a rejection so final it burned.
