The Devil Of Probability-Chapter 50: Blooming Flowers In The Snow
Before I continue, I do want to say, I’m only allowed to show memories that I have access to. Of course, I want you to experience the same emotions as I did at the current point at which I found out about certain obstacles.
In no way have I ever lied to you, nor will I do so in the future. I’m simply telling the events in chronological order; that is all. As to why I have access to what I’m about to show, I cannot say yet.
It would be unexplainable as of right now, so please do not presume anything.
This is only for you to better understand the humans that are at play right now. Now, let us continue.
Flick. Flick-flick.
"Come on. You’d better start working."
Flick! Flick!
"Damn it."
Rin stood on the balcony of a penthouse, cigarette in her mouth, and lighter in hand. However, to her displeasure, the lighter would not seem to work. She blew a stray strand of hair back into place as she stared down at the lighter.
Still, even when angered, her facial expression did not dare to change. She ran her fingers through her snow-white hair, which was matted in sweat. Rin set the lighter down, looking up into the clouds.
By this time, the sun had just begun to set, its hues violet, magenta, and fire orange blending into one another. She tugged at the robe that hung loosely around her waist, tightening it effortlessly.
Blossom appeared behind her shortly after. She wore the same robe, a beautiful contrast of cherry-pink and snow-white. Rin turned around to see Blossom, noting the red marks around her wrists.
"I thought I told you to stay put," Rin said.
"You didn’t put them tight enough again."
Blossom’s lips were curled from ear to ear, even as the cold air made the sweat on her body chill. Rin stared at her blankly for a few moments before returning the smile.
"Sit down. I’ll get you a drink."
"Mmmm. I’m afraid that’s not why I’m here right now. Although I wish it were. Hehe."
Rin raised an eyebrow, sitting down on a nearby chair. Blossom followed her movements, sitting down next to her. Both of them stared at the sunset, a beauty only they seemed to appreciate.
Flick. Flick.
"It’s not gonna work, Rini. Get it replaced."
"...No."
"Sigh."
Rin took the cigarette out of her mouth, letting it fall loosely to her side as her smile dropped. At the same time, Blossom turned towards her, a rather apologetic look on her face.
"I’ve been waiting until you finished up everything on your investigation into Zhongli to tell you this — Haruto is dead."
Rin’s expression remained the same, not bothering to look at Blossom.
"That’s fine. People die all the time; there’s no difference. Who did the clan have as a replacement?"
"That’s your brother, Rin. Plus, I know how you feel, and I know it’s certainly not that. It’s okay to open up to me, even if it’s just temporary."
"I’ve been through further important deaths. It’s his fault. If he hadn’t chased after me..."
Rin stopped herself. She put her head down, realizing the slip in her act. She didn’t even bother covering it, just switched the subject to what was most important for the time being.
"Who’s his replacement?"
"Ayame."
"Ayame? Last time I saw her, she couldn’t even hold her gun correctly. On top of that, she’s eighteen and still hasn’t unlocked her Signature."
Blossom sighed; she understood Rin’s true feelings. Sending her in was practically asking for her death, begging even. Even if she didn’t want to admit it, she still pitied the weak, no matter their background.
"Okay, well, how about Renji?"
"If they send him, I’ll kill him."
"...Kenta?"
Rin looked up in thought. This one was actually a decent choice. From her memory, Kenta’s Signature was called "Trail." It was rather useful; anything that emitted a trail, whether it be paper, digital, or physical, could be traced by him.
However, Rin knew better than to send him in. It wasn’t because of his personality, or anything else of that matter. The only reason was that she already had Simon Crest.
Simon did everything Kenta could do, and better at that. He was more thorough with reports, filled in gaps when needed, and his record was squeaky clean. In all honesty, she did not like anything about Simon.
He was too clean, almost like a robot.
"Not Kenta. They already have that Crest kid." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"I see. Speaking of Crest, the only reason these options are being presented to you is that we had the option of joining his Investigation Team, or working as Shadow Operators."
"I know. I was already asked to join their team — but I refuse to be a pawn to that man."
Flick.
The lighter finally came to life as Rin lit her cigarette. She held it to her mouth, taking a much-needed inhale.
"Phewwww. I’m assuming there’s one last option?"
"You know their system a little too well."
"I was supposed to be the next head; I’d be a disgrace if I didn’t."
"I suppose you’re right. The last candidate is Kiyoharu."
Rin didn’t respond for quite a long time, presumably deep in thought. But the time she responded, her cigarette was already half ashed.
"Sounds good to me. However, if he doesn’t follow my orders, I’ll kill him just like I did the old man."
"Haha. I don’t doubt that... But why not kill them all in the first place? Wouldn’t that make things easier?"
"Because the other clans will wage war for their land and assets."
Without another word, Blossom nodded and stood up pridefully on her two feet. She strided towards Rin, straddling her hips without asking. Rin’s hand instinctively reached up towards Blossom’s hair, guiding her head to her neck.
Blossom leaned in impossibly closer, her breath soft against Rin’s skin.
"Knives?"
"Again?"
"Why not?"
"...Okay. Go get ready while I finish this."
