THE FORGOTTEN HEIRESS-Chapter 420: Did You Sleep With Her?
"She kept insisting that the gun was empty," Lauren’s voice came through.
He studied her closely. "Why are you bringing this up?"
"What I mean is, I want to hear your own opinion. Do you believe she’s saying the truth? We were all asked to be silent on the matter when you lost your memory, but since you now remember everything, I think we should deal with this alongside Dolly’s."
Steffan let out a deep breath and leaned back into his chair. "I’ve known Benita’s character since we were young and she isn’t capable of taking someone’s life," Steffan said.
"You could have also said the same about Dolly a few months back," Lauren reminded a little too sharply. "So I can’t rely on that and say you might be right when it comes to being a good judge of character."
Was Steffan defending Benita? Will he go against everyone and ask them to drop the case because he feels she wasn’t capable of hurting a fly? If that were the case, she’d be truly disappointed.
"I agree, might have made some mistakes in the past about Dolly, but I know those two well enough to tell you who is capable of what? Benita, though spoilt has never been the wicked type. Dolly however, fits that description better."
Lauren’s frown deepened as she listened to Steffan. "And what’s your basis for coming to that conclusion about Dolly?"
"I never told you, but one of the reasons I returned back to the country five years ago was actually because of Dolly."
"Okay...?"
"She caused so much problems for me tgat almost cost me my license," Steffan.
Lauren saw a vein twitch in his jaw and could tell it was something he’d rather not talk about. But her curiosity hit the better of her. What did Dolly do?
"Initially I turned a blind eye when she started telling people we were dating since it kept off those other ladies who would only approach me with just one mission... sex. Besides, we both knew there was nothing between us and we were just watching out for one another. Or so I thought."
"But when she started crossing her boundaries and started acting as a real wife to the point of suggesting we share the same room, I had to put my foot down."
"Then the last straw that broke the camel’s back was when she spread a rumour that she was pregnant with my child and made my medical director and everyone that cared to know, believe I had forced her into having an abortion.
"How? Did you sleep with her?"
Steffan’s nose up in disgust. "Not at all.
"A few weeks prior to that time, she’d been down with an infection and had told me to get her something. As her friend I didn’t think twice and got her some strong antibiotics after seeing the test results she showed me. Little did I know that it was a trap she set for me to force me into being with her."
"She was calous enough to even produce a video where I was forcing her to take the drugs which seemed real enough."
"Was it doctored?"
"No. Despite being a doctor herself, Dolly hated drugs, so on several occasion when she’d fallen sick, we would force her to take her drugs which was what I was doing in the video. But she twisted everything around when she produced that video as evidence."
"After everything was over and it was discovered she was never pregnant, she was dismissed from the hospital."
She came to apologize later and though I forgave her, I refused to accept her back as my friend. Then she vowed that if she doesn’t have me, no other woman will."
"I brushed her aside and continued with my life and a few months later after I’ve perfected arrangements here with the help of Shawn, I handed in my resignation and came over to settle in Baltimore."
"But you never looked like you had such a history when I saw you two together for the first time after you regained consciousness," Lauren said. She could vividly recall how cozy they looked together.
"That’s because I had lost my memory and only remembered the way we used to be before that incident. And as expected when she knew I had selective amnesia, Dolly naturally took advantage of my memory lapse to get close to me again."
"It wasn’t until I regained my complete memory at her place that I realised how she’d used me again for her selfish aims.
"And that was why I chose to keep up the pretense to put a permanent stop to her interference in my life and the lives of my loved ones."
"I can’t believe I even opened the door of my family house to her... I feel like hitting myself over and over when I think of that."
"Then when she saw again that you had lost all your memory, she struck again with the lie that you two were married and expecting a child. How can someone be that desperate?"
"That’s not all. If not that I kept some things out earlier at the house, you wouldn’t have been the only one that went to see Dolly at the police station."
"There’s more?"
"Mm-hmm," Steffan nodded sadly. "To keep me from ever going out, she made me believe I was an orphan and my only surviving family who happens to be my uncle... according to her, wanted me dead and was hunting for me everywhere."
"What? Did you believe her?"
"Why would I? Of course I knew she was lying but I had to continue playing along until it was the right time to strike."
"Poor orphan," Lauren joked despite the seriousness of their discussion.
"So you see why you need to take care of me. I have no one else but you in this world," Steffan moved his seat towards Lauren and held onto her waist, staring at her with a rather pathetic expression. "You see, I need a reassuring kiss that I will never be alone again in my life."
Lauren was speechless. How come the Hunter had suddenly turned to be the hunted? She didn’t expect that Steffan would turn the joke around in his favour. What a shameless man!
She shook her head helplessly, "Can you be serious for once?"
"Who says I’m not? I’ve never been more serious. I only need some loving, that’s all. Or is that too much to ask?" Steffan closed his eyes, pouted his lips for a kiss, but his eyes instantly flew open when instead of Lauren’s succulent lips, a large lobster was pushed into his mouth.
Before he could complain, Lauren’s next words snapped him back to seriousness.
"If not that Dolly had never had any interactions with Benita, I would believe that she’s the one that loaded that bullet into the gun."
For a moment, Steffan just stared at Lauren speechlessly.
"How did you come up with that?" He asked in disbelief.
That was exactly what they were working on. They’ve been able to confirm that Dolly was one of Isabella’s friends and was in the same house as Benita on the day of the wedding.
