The General's Wife Wants to Leave-Chapter 134: Not a lowly man
Chapter 134: Not a lowly man
There was no doubt in Viscount Henderson that the so-called great General of Archess, who was well-known to be a bloodthirsty man, as rumour had spread out about his cruelness when he was on the battlefields, would turn down his offer after he mentioned the innocence of his captivating daughter, whose body was far more voluptuous and attractive than the General’s wife.
The innocence of a woman, along with her irresistible body, was an unavoidable temptation that could definitely draw the interest of any man, making it impossible for them to reject such an unbearable pleasure. And it was the weapon that was used by the Viscount to capture anyone who could save him from sinking deeper into beggary.
But a fleeting second later, his confidence was shattered into dust by his remaining target’s cold and sharp response.
"I have already said my answer, and I won’t change it. I am not interested in taking any mistresses. My wife is enough for me," Canillas stated in a firmer tone, raising his hand, which was intertwined with his wife’s, to meet the eyes of the impudent man, as he wanted to show him that he was not interested in any of the sugary yet indecent words he used to sell his daughter to him.
The crudeness of the arrogant, impudent, drunkard man had been getting in Canillas’ hair since he saw and heard how he treated his wife and his father-in-law. He really wanted to punch the older man’s face since then, regardless of what state the older man was in at the moment. But he held back, as he did not want to taint the reputable name of his wife’s family by putting them in trouble through his barbaric action.
Aside from that, Canillas also did not want them to be humiliated by him as their new family member, who was a rude and ruthless commoner, which would then make them regret having such a new family member.
What had been said by the impudent Viscount had hit his conscience. His father-in-law could not marry his sole daughter to the respectable aristocrat because he had chosen his daughter to be his wife. Therefore, Canillas wanted to do something to make his father-in-law not regret having him, a commoner, as the husband of his precious daughter.
If it were himself, the filthy old man would have long stopped chattering over rubbish words.
Receiving another failure, Viscount Henderson snorted, about to show his true color. "Are you pretending to be a loyal man like your father-in-law so that you will be on the same level as him? Like an ugly duckling want to be a beautiful swan?" He laughed out loud before continuing to pour out his frustration.
"Rejecting my daughters." He sneered. "Who do you think you are? You are only a lowly, opportunist man who looked for the chance to sneak into the luxurious life of nobility so you could enjoy the body of a noble woman." He tched.
"How does de Lara taste? Have you enjoyed enough? Which part of her body th...?
The unrestrained, filthy words of the older man were cut off as his collar was pulled by the taller man in front of him, causing the cane he held to fall to the floor due to the shock of an unanticipated movement.
"I have been patient with all of your trashy, nonsensical, disgusting behavior," Canillas said, gritting his teeth. "But to hear you mention anything inappropriately about my wife is a big no to me." He tightened his grip on the older man’s collar as he expressed his exasperation.
"It is true that I am a lowly man, and I am fine with you insulting me because I don’t really care about any of that. But not my wife. Do you get it?" Canillas clenched his jaw while talking, sternly warning the older man and pulling his collar to the point where he could not step on the floor.
He no longer cared about reputation and dignity at the moment, and he was ready to take any responsibility for what he had done to protect the honor of his wife.
The trashy Viscount was now looking like he was going to pass out following the tightening of the grip on the collar of his white shirt dress, which made it hard for him to breathe. His hands flailed, hitting the hands that suffocated him.
Suddenly, there was a hand holding Canillas’ arm that gripped the collar of the almost-passed-out man, as he intended to squeeze the man’s neck indirectly through the collar.
Moving his darkened gaze from the white gloved, smaller hand than his, which he had just let go of because he lost his patience and had an irresistible urge to give an unforgettable lesson to the annoying man who had insulted his wife, Canillas saw his wife shake her head, gesturing to him to release the older man.
As the grip was released unwillingly with a slight push over the older man, Canillas then heard the soft voice of his wife as she spoke to the older man, who was now breathing rapidly as if gathering the lost air back to his lungs.
None of his daughters bothered to help ease him, as they stood a few steps away from the scene with a flat expression on their faces, as if they were only spectators and strangers who had no blood relationship with him and were here only to watch the free entertainment that was performed by their so-called father.
"Viscount Henderson should remember that without General Canillas von Rodega, Terra would not have stood like it is now." Joanna began. "We also would not have lived peacefully on this land like we are now."
"And he is not a lowly man." Joanna continued to defend the General. "I would say that he can’t be compared with any noble men in this land, as he has his own class as a savior and a hero of our kingdom."
"And he will never take any mistresses, not because he wants to show himself as a loyal man like my father, or to be in the same social class as my father, or to transform from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan. But it is because he is a man who values the sacred of marriage highly," Joanna uttered in a calm tone, despite uncertainty, that she was saying rightly that he would never take any mistresses.
But she did not want to show her doubt in her speech, calmly facing the older man, who glared at her in disapproval, as if still not able to accept himself being lectured by a younger person and a woman.
However, he did not dare to reprimand her due to the young man who stood not far behind her and stared sharply at him, ready to give him more lessons if he dared touch the woman.
"I would also like to remind Viscount Henderson that we are married by royal decree, not because General von Rodega sneaked into the luxurious life of nobility, as you nonsensically accused. And it is not a public secret that I believe Viscount actually knew about that." Joanna resumed speaking, eager to make everything clear and heard by all the spectators that were watching them at the moment.
"So if Viscount Henderson insulted General von Rodega, accusing him of being an opportunist to marry a noble lady, then Viscount has demeaned the royal decree that was issued by the King himself. And you should have known what consequences to behold if this issue happens to be heard by His Majesty the King."
Because all Terrans should have known that the King himself wanted his precious General to marry one of the Terran noble ladies, not because the General requested such a plea.
"I also want to make it clear, and I hope Viscount Henderson will understand and accept it as it is after this." Joanna kept on giving a lecture to the older man, who was still busy gathering his breath and massaging his neck with his trembling hands.
"My father and my husband will never take your precious daughters as their mistresses or wives. They are not men who solely think about cold or warm beds. Both of them are ordinary men who value marriage highly. They also respect your daughters, not wanting to demean them, and even my father has said that he regards them as his daughters. So if other people give respect to your daughters, why do you, as their father, have to demean them?"
Joanna poured out anything inside her that had accumulated since the older man offered their own daughters as her father and the General’s mistresses.
She disliked the way he talked badly about her father and her so-called husband. She also disliked the way he treated his daughters as an item that could be sold anytime he wanted, regardless of how his daughters viewed this matter.
Joanna also felt that the Viscount was not fair in treating his daughters, who were seen and treated lowly just because they were born as illegitimate children of his mistresses. But then would they be born as illegitimate if he was not busy womanizing and spreading his seeds here and there?
Regardless of whether they support their father or not, were they willing to go with what he decided because they had no choice? It was their choice. Joanna just wanted to voice her point of view as a young woman who had sympathy for their situation.
"I think we have made everything clear. We’ll take our leave now. Have a good evening, Viscount Henderson." Joanna offered the older man a slight bow, not asking for an apology for what had been done by her so-called husband to him.
Because he deserved that lesson, and hopefully it would have a deterrent effect for him, although Joanna doubted it based on the way he glared at her.
She then turned to look at Lady Erna and Lady Lauren, who had already landed their eyes on her. Joanna smiled and offered them a slight bow as well. Deep inside her heart, she hoped they would live a good life.
In no time, Joanna, together with her husband and her father, left the scene, ignoring all the eyes that were directed at them and the murmuring that was surely, apart from badmouthing the shameless viscount, talking about them as well.
As she put her hand on her father’s arm, she was not aware that there were a pair of green eyes that had warmly stared at her when she spoke with the rude man. And those eyes were still fixed on the back of her head even now.
A small smile that contained a certain meaning was apparent on his face. And he was now holding himself back from the urge to embrace the warm-hearted lady who had stood for him, whom she had called her husband through her soft, melodious voice.
