Chapter 39 - The Vice-Principal's Plan

After setting the time and place, James left the classroom. The academy grounds were quieter this evening, most of the students had gone to the city to hangout, but there were still some people milling around.

James was walking through the hallways, when he heard footsteps behind him. This time he didn't want to play any more games of cat and mouse so he immediately turned around.

Kira Nocturne.

"Why are you following me?" James asked curiously.

"I'm not."

The raven-haired girl had an expressionless face as she walked past him. But after a few steps, she stopped and turned around, "Be careful of the demons."

James was silent. Why would she say that? Have they approached her as well?

"Why?"

"It doesn't matter why," she replied, voice tight with frustration. "Just do it." Her brows furrowed and her lips pursed into a stubborn line.

Then, as if compelled by something she added more softly, "If you need help... you can ask me."

James was taken aback. Kira had always been hard to read. Reserved but sharp-tongued. He couldn't say she was cruel but she certainly wasn't nice.

Actually, James had been thinking about her for a while now. Whenever he had combat practice before, many times Lydia and Kira would always partner up with him, to help him avoid Ryan and his cronies. But before his death, he always thought it was Lydia who was helping him. He even had a crush on her because of that.

But after getting the Gigolo system and seeing the favorability of the two girls, James felt that maybe he had been mistaken.

"Before, when Lydia always asked to practice with me, was it because of you?"

Kira was silent for a while, but James noticed that she looked down at her hand for a brief moment.

Then she nodded.

James gave a half-laugh, shaking his head. "Thank you... I'll keep what you said in mind."

The city was livelier than usual that evening. Being Friday, the streets of Ainsworth's urban districts were bustling. Lanterns lit the walkways, and magical glowflies danced through the air, illuminating the vendor stalls and open cafes.

Students and locals alike mingled in taverns, and magic shops. Although the city was really a part of Ainsworth Academy, they also needed people to run the various facilities so there were many outsiders present. Of course, all of them had been vetted, and some families had even lived in Ainsworth for centuries.

James wandered around for a while and then headed straight for Selena's residence.

Selena was there waiting for him.

He got straight to business and asked what he was curious about all afternoon.

"What did the vice- principal say?"

Selena blinked, then leaned back on the sofa, her tone turning thoughtful. "When I told him about what I overheard—the Everhearts conspiring against the demon tribe—he wasn't surprised. He didn't even ask for evidence. Just said... he'd suspected something like that for a while."

James frowned.

"He said he believes me," she continued. "He's already been investigating. He suspects a spy from the Thirteen Houses is somewhere within the faculty... but he hasn't figured out who yet."

James leaned against the wall, arms folded. "And the spy idea?"

"I mentioned planting a spy on the demon side" Selena said, her voice low. "But like you said, I didn't give your name.

"He said I handled it well and that if I can provide solid contributions, he'll help when I try to advance to a high level mage"

This was a serious promise. The highest level mage in the Vaughn family was only a level 8 mage, and he was already quite old. If she could get the vice-principal's help it would make her promotion much easier.

James pondered.

Victor Albrein has been the vice principal of Ainsworth for many years. He was the most trusted subordinate of the principal and while the principal was missing these years he acted as the head of the school.

It's not unusual that he had already noticed something suspicious, but James wondered how he would deal with everything.

James said slowly: "Well it's good that the school is already prepared"

Then he added, "By the way you should tell your family to investigate the connection between the Everhearts and the Witch Tribe in the Demon region. But ask them to be careful!"

Selena nodded. She knew that James had been researching curses of the Witch Tribe but she wasn't sure why. But she didn't ask, she only needed to help him.

James sat on the sofa and thought about the training camp next week. He was feeling some pressure. After all, he was still too weak.

He looked at the beautiful woman in front of him. His gaze shifted from her face to the deep neckline of her robes. Then, without warning, he reached out and rubbed his hand across her chest a few times.

Selena's eyes went wide, stunned. But before she could even swat him, James had already darted toward the bedroom with a grin.

"What the hell are you doing?!" she snapped, flustered.

"Trying to get some luck!" he called back cheekily.

In Selena's bedroom, James called out to the system.

"Active the lottery reward."

The interface whirred to life, vibrant colors flashing like confetti in his mind's eye. A silver-and-gold chest shimmered into existence before him. When it opened, a card floated gently into his hand.

[Silver Level Item: Blood Catalyst]

[One of the highest-grade Silver-tier rewards available. This artifact will refine and amplify the user's bloodline concentration, improving both physical potential and magical affinity.]

[Caution: Catalysis may exaggerate residual essence contained in bloodline. Users with insufficient soul strength may experience serious soul damage.]

James looked at the small card in his hand, and was conflicted. He had strong soul power but his bloodline was that of a level 8 magical beast, and contained traces of its aura. The aura of a magical beast contains its latent memories, if the remaining aura in the blood overwhelmed him, he might go crazy.

"It's a risk..."

James decided to mediate and increase his mana to the highest possible amount for now. Maybe if he uses the [Blood Catalyst] card, he can improve his mana capacity as well his bloodline abilities.
