THE GOD EATER-Chapter 219: Time For Regrets.
He continued to say, "During the brief talk before we boarded his airship, he nearly angered everyone into fighting. I had to step forward to interrupt them before they could fight."
"I was the one who averted the fight and urged them into the airship on time. Now that I am no longer there to do my job, things didn’t go so well."
This made him smile and say, "It seems my absence is meaningful. It might even be more than meaningful."
As it turned out, this turned out to be true. In fact, this statement was proven to be an understatement. His absence was felt in more than one way.
5 minutes after the airship left, they arrived at the city and began opening fire on it with 12 cannons and one giant silver mech. Greg was very angry this time around because of the people who quit early on him, so he was very aggressive in his attempt to break the shield of the fortress city.
Not only was he angry, but he also wanted to break the shield as quickly as possible, take down the city as fast as possible, and prove to everyone who didn’t believe him that he was right all along.
So instead of letting his mech work on only slowing down the healing of the energy shield, he made the mech increase its output so that it could do further damage to the energy shield, so that the shield would fall faster.
This worked well, and the energy shield fell early. Everyone on the airship cheered when this happened. They were very happy because all that remained for them was to fight and earn merit points unimpeded by the energy shield.
After cheering, they descended the airship with ladders and began racing towards the city. The defenders of the city were also coming out to fight them.
The two sides were poised to fight when Greg opened fire on them. Six of the cannons fired at a single man and tore him to shreds, killing him.
After making sure that the man was dead, Greg said to everyone else, "It is fine now. You can continue to attack the city."
But no one listened to him. Everyone was too busy running for their lives to listen to the words of a madman.
As they ran away, many of them went to the communication channel to complain.
Someone said, "You were right. Greg is crazy. He opened fire on us just as the fight began."
Another person said, "He killed someone. He just bombarded him with cannons for no reason. I wish i hadn’t followed him on this mission. I regret it so much."
Even another person asked in shock, "How can someone like him be a captain? He is not mentally fit to be a captain."
The response from the rest of the people who were safe back at post 419 came rushing in after these words.
Someone laughed as they said, "See? Didn’t I tell you? He is crazy."
One of the people who had quit just before they left sighed in relief and said, "Fortunately, I regained my senses early on and didn’t follow him. I could be the one to die if I had gone."
Another person snorted before saying, "I am not surprised at all because this is what you should expect from him. When you get used to him as I have, you won’t be surprised by his shenanigans anymore."
Everyone was busy chatting in the communication channel or running away from Greg. No one was standing up for Greg anymore. Everyone had collectively accepted that he was crazy.
Nothing Greg could say could convince them to continue fighting with him, so he had to fight the warriors on his own. This was a daunting task.
Even though he was stronger than most of the warriors one-on-one, he couldn’t take on all 89 giants alone. And even if he could take them on and kill all of them, there was no way he could hold on to the city alone.
Since killing the warriors was only going to earn him grade 3 merit points, which were of little use to him, he decided not to bother with the warriors. He drove the airship directly over the city to bombard it.
Since he couldn’t hold the city and had no interest in fighting the defenders of the city, he decided to destroy the city and kill everyone within it so that he could earn grade 4 merit points.
So his goal was two-fold. He wants to destroy the city, and he wants to kill everyone within it. In order to achieve these goals, he used both his mech and the airship to bombard the city.
The airship circled above the city, bombarding with cannon fire, while the silver mech hovered at the center of the city and blanketed the area with napalm fire.
He was orchestrating a massacre that the warriors couldn’t stop because they couldn’t fly. Their balistae failed to bring down the airship, and their attempts to reach the airship in the air by riding their hummingbird vehicles also failed.
The hummingbird vehicles were like bicycles. The warriors would get in and pedal with all of their strength. The great strength of their legs would cause the wings of the hummingbird to flutter, which provided uplift to the vehicle.
In theory, they should be able to reach the airship with their hummingbird vehicles. And it should have worked if not for Greg shooting them down with flak guns.
So even though he was alone, Greg still succeeded in decimating the city. He killed more than half of the 100,000 people living in the city and would have succeeded in doing more if many of them hadn’t escaped and if he hadn’t run out of ammunition.
It was the absence of ammunition that eventually made him retreat. But even after he left, the city was still burning. It continued to burn for hours after he was gone.
