Chapter 176: Pressure (1)

"Something should be done about this," Tabitha said, watching from the palace steps as Hazel mingled with the people she let in through the gates. "Already she is off to a bad start. She has left the nobles inside waiting."

"They don’t mind as they are mingling amongst themselves. It is only you and a few of the court that are upset. You can not step in to stop her now," Jeffrey warned. It would take some time but they had to get used to Tobias and Hazel holding power. "Do not meddle."

"I am speaking of what is right. The girl is showing that she lacked proper training," said Tabitha.

"You are to address her as queen and it was your duty to train her, so it would mean that you failed. I am going back to entertain the guests and have a drink. The people will love the two even more for going out to greet them. It is nothing to be upset about," Jeffrey said, not worried as long as no one tried to injure the couple.

"You are too lax," Tabitha muttered. She could not stomach the sight of Tobias mingling with people he didn’t know.

What if the people started to expect to be welcomed into the palace for more events? There was only one ball when such a thing was allowed. Festivals throughout the year were planned for the kingdom to celebrate.

Tabitha turned around to go back inside as she could no longer watch. It came as no surprise that Grant was coming this way. "I’m surprised to not hear news of your granddaughter getting married yet. Many young men have been speaking of their desire to marry into your family. You must be quick before the season ends."

"Linda is not in any rush to get married. There will be a reward to come with being patient. She is not like any other young woman to lose her value with a little waiting. I believe your son will make a good king," Grant said, looking down at where Tobias was with Hazel.

"Of course, he will. He’s been preparing for this moment for a long time. He has many plans to make the kingdom better. I think he will be a far greater king than Jeffrey," said Tabitha.

"He might if he has the help of my family. I will stay close with my son and grandson when he needs us. As long as he doesn’t cross my family, he will have our help. There is a way we could do more for him," Grant said, looking away from Hazel to Tabitha. "I’m hearing more talk of when he might take women to his side."

Tabitha smiled as it was a bit funny a man Hazel saw as her grandfather was trying to get her best friend to be a woman of her husband.

Years ago when it was brought up that Jeffrey should take women, Tabitha wanted to lash out, but she had given birth to a son fast to silence those men and luckily, Jeffrey had no interest in taking women to his side.

"My son has no plans of taking women. He is in love with Hazel and like his father," Tabitha said, proud to be able to say Tobias’s flirtatious ways were over.

"Are you sure your husband doesn’t have a hidden son who can rival Tobias-"

"I would not speak of lies if I were you,’ Tabitha argued. There wasn’t a person in this palace to lie to her and make her believe Jeffrey had been unfaithful to her. freeweɓnøvel.com

Tabitha was always ready to do her duties as queen without any question. Should Jeffrey have wanted another woman by his side, she would have kept quiet about it as she had no place to say that he could not do it. Her words would have fallen on deaf ears.

Jeffrey knew that he could do it so why would he hide a woman?

"I’ve served in this palace for a long time. I know many secrets that you will never come to know. I admire a woman like you who is all about tradition. As long as you are willing to help me when the time comes, I shall help you when you need me. You want your son to stay well protected," said Grant.

"Your family has sworn your loyalty to my family. It is your duty to protect him and get rid of anyone posing a threat," Tabitha reminded Grant of his oath.

"You shouldn’t treasure words said long ago. It is time that I look out for the best interest of my family. Finding a way for us to be remembered in history. I promise you will not hate what will come. I suggest you stay in the palace for a little until Linda is made one of Hazel’s ladies. My granddaughter has an interest in the palace now that Hazel is here," said Grant.

"Grant, though I am a bit intrigued by your plans, I am not someone you can order around. That is where you lost me. Have a good day," Tabitha said then left his side to join Jeffrey in greeting the guests.

Grant should approach her differently if he wanted to get his granddaughter nestled in the palace. The mention of secrets and loyalty wasn’t enough to get her to just follow his command. Her crown might be gone but she hadn’t changed from being the one in control.

Hopefully, Grant would be smart to come to her with another approach.

Tabitha didn’t fear losing Henson’s loyalty as this was only Grant speaking. The others spoke time and time again of willing to risk their lives to protect the Castros. She wondered if Kenneth was aware of his father’s planning. Would Linda desire the throne to stab Hazel in the back?

Whether a child came from Wallace or Henson’s daughter, it would benefit the palace as they were two strong families. There was no loss for the palace with Grant’s plans so Tabitha wouldn’t meddle unless Grant would try harming Tobias.

"Mother!" Sofia called as she ran to her mother. "Are you finished with speaking to the people?"

"Why did you allow her to come here?" Tabitha scolded Sofia’s maid. Her daughter was not to mingle with the people. It was hard enough to stop Sofia from requesting to play with the children coming with the servants.

Tabitha held Sofia’s hand to lead her back inside. "You are not to go outside to speak. It might cost your life. You must do as I say and be nothing like her."
