The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 179: The beginning (1)
Chapter 179: The beginning (1)
"Look at you, cowering like a fool," Grant said, irritated by the sight of the young woman he was trying to make use of. "I gave you one simple task and yet, you have nothing to report back to me so why are you standing before me?"
"I-I apologise. The queen’s maid caught me and then-"
"So why would you approach me when you have nothing of value to tell me? You’ve proven yourself to be a waste each time I see you. Perhaps it is time that I cast you to the side," Grant said, but still, he needed her.
There wasn’t someone as gullible as she was to always be ready to do what he wanted even though it might cost her life.
Julia panicked as she didn’t want Grant to dispose of her. She tried many times to do something to make him happy. It wasn’t her fault that the queen’s maid came out at the same time she was listening to the conversation. "I will find something better this time. Please give me another chance."
"It must be worth something that Lady Tabitha still dislikes Hazel and once spoke of your granddaughter being a better choice. I," Julia stopped, stepping back as Grant stepped forward. "I can get close to the queen. She helped me when the queen’s maid was trying me to hit me."
"Did she?" Grant replied, interested in this. "What did she say to you?"
"She asked if I was hurt and was going to check but I ran away before giving her an answer. I can get close to the queen," Julia promised.
Grant stepped back to put space between them. "It would please me if you would get close to her. Before I forgive you, you must get a position near the queen. Then I would have a special task that you shouldn’t disappoint me with."
"Can I depend on you?" Grant questioned, gently touching her face.
Julia relaxed because of Grant’s touch. No matter how angry he was with her, even if he was close to hitting her, his touch was all she needed to feel to be comforted. She wanted to please him as he had taken care of her more than anyone for as long as she could remember.
Julia wanted to please him with her job in the palace so he would let her please him in other ways.
"Get close to the king and I shall reward you well. You and your siblings," Grant promised, knowing she would jump to do it. "I will give you three days to get close to her and send me a note. Three days."
"Now, who is the one to bruise you?" Grant inquired, displeased that someone was hurting what belonged to him. Julia made mistakes but it was up to him how she was to be punished. His things shouldn’t be touched.
"It was the former queen’s maid, Jane. She might try to get in my way of becoming the queen’s maid. With her out of the way, I can get close to Hazel," said Julia.
Grant wanted to comment on Julia wanting him to dispose of someone but the more he was hearing like the other maid the more it sounded like a headache. "If I get rid of her only for you to not get close to Hazel, you will join her in death. Do you understand?"
"I do," Julia answered. She would not fail again.
"Go," Grant ordered Julia. He was over the sight of her.
Julia was a beautiful young woman, a few years over Linda, and unlike many, she was one to follow tradition. Listening to his orders and staying in a woman’s place. When his wife annoyed him, Julia was one of the women he sought out.
Grant watched Julia hurry off to then turn to go back to where all the guests were. Julia was his little secret. No one in the court knew of the people he had carefully placed in the palace. He didn’t trust the fools in the court not to make a mistake and expose his spies.
Until the court proved itself worthy and not stupid, Grant was going to have his own little side plans to get Linda on the throne as soon as possible. There would be no one else willing to go to the limits he would to have his family become part of the royal family.
If Kenneth had stopped being so serious about the oath to the Castros, they could have stormed the palace with their army and taken it by force. Though Grant had a large army, he needed Kenneth and his grandsons’ support to get all the men to listen to him.
Men who swore to protect the king would not want to help behead him if all of the Hensons were not for it.
"That silly boy," Grant muttered, fixing his coat as he walked back to where everyone was gathering. "Are you stalking me now, Kenneth? I cannot go anywhere without you nearby. What is it?"
"You left the church without saying a word. I thought you left us and returned home. We must speak to Hazel and Tobias. I thought you would like to have a word with her," Kenneth said, looking around for the reason his father was there.
"I left to see the crowd at the gates and then spoke to the former queen for a moment. You don’t need to be questioning me about where I go. You’re starting to annoy me these days, Kenneth. I told you that woman would turn you soft-" frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
"She’s the mother of the grandchildren you love so much. She hasn’t turned me to anything," Kenneth argued. His father’s way of blaming his wife was getting old.
Kenneth didn’t realise how much his father used to do it as he was busy leading the army in the past, but now that he had time to spare and listen, he finally heard it. Regardless of what his father blamed her for, his wife always made Grant feel welcome.
When she was so kind, Kenneth could not let his father voice tradition upon her and make her no different than a maid.
"If not her, there would have been another woman to make grandchildren that I love. Such is life," Grant replied.
Kenneth pinched the bridge of his nose. "I was right that you should stay out of the palace. You are starting to change and it is not for good. I urge you that unless there is something about war or you are here to offer your advice, stay out of the palace. I would hate to see you one day hanging from the gates."
