The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 64: Far from over (2)
Chapter 64: Far from over (2)
Helena was the first to join the queen in finding a seat. She had high hopes that the queen saw this all as a great mistake and came here to change everything.
Nathan held Renee’s hand and led her to the couch Helena was sitting on so they could all face the queen. As they sat down, Nathan didn’t let go of her hand as he thought it was necessary so Renee could control her anger.
The last thing their house needed was to go to war with the palace. Then their daughters would find it hard to wed and might need to move away from Lockwood though the queen greatly needed their services.
"We are trying to figure out what happened for Helena to be dismissed from the selection and curious about Hazel’s whereabouts," Renee said, starting first as she needed answers.
"Hazel is now with my son. She is carrying out her role in the selection and doing quite well. He has picked her each time and the king believes she has a strong chance of becoming queen. There was a misunderstanding about Hazel not dancing with the prince at the ball. She did it to prevent further comparison to her sister," Tabitha said, leaving out some of the story.
Tabitha couldn’t have the Wallace upset with her too.
Tabitha continued to say, "I realised how it must be for the two of them to be competing against each other. The oldest is not fully participating as she looks after the younger one. It was a hard decision, but the choice was made to take Helena out before their relationship soured. The palace doesn’t want to be the reason for your daughters no longer speaking to each other."
"I see," Renee said, still feeling like there was more.
It wasn’t like her daughters had done something to each other. It should have been expected from the very beginning that Hazel would look out for Helena and Helena would do the same. Renee didn’t like how Helena started to speak of Hazel, but so far, it seemed like what the queen knew wasn’t needed for Helena to leave.
"I know what you must be feeling right now. This could lead to others speaking on Helena. Making a mockery of her. To make up for our mistake of calling two sisters to the palace, I will keep Helena in the palace and help her to find a husband. Please accept the offer. With this, I can help to avoid gossip about her," Tabitha said, looking at Nathan who was easier to convince.
"It is a kind offer, but it might be best that I take my daughter from the palace. We can help her to find a husband before the season comes to an end," Nathan said, no longer wanting Helena wrapped up in the palace.
He didn’t like the tone Helena had and how she pointed fingers at Hazel as if she was the enemy. There was nothing anyone could do that the prince had taken a liking to Hazel. Helena should see this as a blessing that she no longer had to be in the palace.
Nathan had been excited about getting his daughters out of his home and not having to spend much of his money each week, but he had always disliked sending them here. He wished he could pull Hazel from the selection as well, but he couldn’t.
Nathan had become somewhat close to the king over the years as the king needed his business for weapons so he knew the tales of things that happened here. The schemes that even the king and queen had to deal with.
It was not a place for Helena or Hazel, but he had hoped for the best and made up his mind to protect them on the side if they were to become queen.
"Father," Helena whined, wanting him to be silent before he blew her chance to get back into the selection. She would still be close to the prince by remaining in the palace.
Helena didn’t want any other man in town when her mind was set on the prince. She prepared for the selection harder than anyone she knew. She was not going to lose to Hazel or any of the other women. She had to give it her all until the very end.
If for some reason she couldn’t become queen, Helena wanted a husband who would have her living in the palace or frequenting it often. She deserved to live somewhere like this.
"I will be honoured to stay and have the queen help me to find a husband," Helena said, speaking for herself since her parents didn’t have her best interest right now. Why should she leave the palace when the queen wanted to keep her around?
The best way to save herself from being ridiculed was to stay close to the queen. Helena did not want to rely on her parents to find a solution to save her from having the town turn her into its latest victim. She was old enough to get married and start a family so she was old enough to decide to stay in the palace.
"I apologise, Your Majesty. We were told that Helena was leaving the palace. We need some time to think if we want her to stay here any longer. You must understand that my trust is no longer there that you won’t call us to take her home again. This cannot happen to my family twice," Nathan said, fed up with the palace at the moment.
He was angry but didn’t want to take it out on the queen. Nathan wanted to find Jeffrey to speak to him and leave Renee to address the queen.
"I understand that this is all sudden for you. With Helena no longer in the selection, you will be able to come visit her. I don’t want her to leave just yet so no one could question why she isn’t here when the selection is still going on. There is still a chance for your daughter to leave the palace with a good husband and her reputation intact. Renee," Tabitha said, switching to Renee now that Nathan was not helpful.
Tabitha was counting on Renee to be the one to realise how good it was to remain here. For the queen to be helping with finding Helena a husband many women would envy her. Then there would be many trying to get close to Helena to figure out what they needed to do to have the queen pick a husband for them.
Tabitha couldn’t have them saying that the palace had played with Helena and pulled her out of the selection for a terrible reason. This matter should be quietly swept under a rug with no fingers pointed at the palace for the mistake. Jeffrey also would not be happy should Nathan’s loyalty change.
There was growing tension in the palace as Tobias’s succession was coming closer. They needed all their loyal friends around at this time and Nathan was one of them. Tabitha had partly caused all of this as she had a great hand in picking the women.
Tabitha was trying to clean up her mess and unfortunately, Helena got caught up in the middle. If it wasn’t for her going to Helena over Hazel, there wouldn’t be a need for all these lies to send Helena away.
Finding Helena a husband was the final piece of cleaning up her mess so Tabitha wished her parents would say yes so they could all move on. So she could show Tobias that she had right the wrong.
