The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 68: Sneaking around (2)
Chapter 68: Sneaking around (2)
Tobias sighed in relief when the last young woman walked out of the room. This was one day of spending time with women that he did not enjoy.
"Enough of that,’ Tobias said, dusting off his shirt as he stood up.
Tobias was more occupied with eating the cookies placed on the plates each time another woman came in instead of speaking about war over and over again along with how much he must love living in the palace.
Tobias had gotten enough compliments in a day to last him a year. He concluded that his mother must hate him for picking women he could never form a connection with.
He understood having to pick women from families they needed to keep loyal to the throne in the future, but Tobias was never going to get involved in a marriage with someone he wanted to hide from whenever they approached him.
Tobias picked up the jug of water from the table and then walked to the door where the head maid was still present. "Here," he said, holding out to her for her to take. "After all the noise I had to put up with, your throat will need this."
Valerie took the jug from the prince as there was nothing else she could do. If he had kept to himself, she wouldn’t need to clear her throat to remind him of her presence. She didn’t need water because he was finally still after Hazel left.
Valerie thought it was important to report to the queen that the prince was misbehaving with Hazel and the girl she knew to have come from the Henson family.
"You are to go to the art room near the garden to join the young ladies for their test on history," Valerie said before Tobias could disappear.
"Am I not to rest?" Tobias muttered. This selection was torture at this point.
"You will rest afterwards," Valerie answered, following behind Tobias to ensure he went where he was meant to go. She couldn’t have him disappearing again and everyone having to search the palace for him.
Tobias looked over his shoulder at the mouthy woman. He was surprised that her throat wasn’t sore by now. "Has anyone ever told you that you speak too much? Keep making so much noise around me and see if you still have a tongue by the next full moon," he warned.
Tobias walked off to where the women would have to gather for their test as he faced his test of not stopping to peel the loud shoes worn by the woman behind him. He was in need of another break away from the palace.
He would even prefer to go back to having books piled up before him to continue his preparation for becoming king. Wasn’t that more important than finding a wife? Why wasn’t his time split in half? ƒгeewebnovёl.com
It annoyed him that the walk to the history room was quicker than normal even though he had been walking slowly. He might have been speeding up a little without noticing so he could get away from all the noise the head maid was making.
Tobias never wanted to hear anyone clear their throat again.
"Son," Tabitha said, greeting Tobias who was about to walk past her. She didn’t think it was intentional as he appeared lost in thought. Her theory was confirmed when he looked her way and was stunned to see her. "We should walk together."
"Only if you send the head maid away," Tobias said. He could not take this any longer.
Tabitha looked at the head maid and it was all it took for Valerie to leave. "Each day I see you, you look upset about something. What is it now? Is it me?"
"That depends on what you did with Helena. Did you send her out of the palace as you should?" Tobias asked.
Tabitha started to walk toward where the women were waiting for her. "I did not," she answered. "I came to an agreement with her family that she would stay and I would help her find another husband. She won’t bother you."
"You’ve been switching everything around to get what you want. Very well," Tobias said, deciding to join in one that game. "The days for me picking a wife are going by fast. When I step to the side to speak to the woman I care for most, I expect that you will not interfere or send your maids to do it for you. Let me live a little instead of being so controlling."
"I will allow it," Tabitha said without pondering on it. "If there is someone you wish to speak to when we are in a group setting, I encourage you to speak to her. I never want you to not show your feelings."
Tabitha was open to Tobias showing that he liked Hazel because it would make the other women work harder to gain their attention. It would be great news to share that the prince was in love with Hazel during the selection. At some point, they needed to sell a story to get the town to love Tobias and his wife.
The women would get wrapped up in what they believed to be a fairytale and root for Tobias’s marriage. The men would simply follow their wives in cheering on the love story.
It was day three so by now the women should all expect that the prince would start showing his favouritism to at least one woman. It was only natural.
"I see that you are trying hard to get back on my good side. At the beginning of the selection, you would have told me to keep my feelings hidden until the end. If you want us to go back to normal, see to it that Helena doesn’t cause any trouble for Hazel," said Tobias.
"She won’t. Helena will not be around the women in the selection and I am helping to marry her off. I promise that I will not let anything come in the way of your growing relationship with Hazel or any of the other women. I will let you take charge sometimes. Please forgive me," Tabitha said, desperate to have him forgive her.
Tobias looked ahead at the women all speaking to each other. As usual, Hazel was off to the side with Linda. "Agree to let me take Hazel to see grandmother’s garden without interruption and I will forgive you. I will not disgrace our family name when alone with her," he promised.
Tabitha didn’t like this idea because his night was already planned, but she would have to change it around. She liked it when Tobias came to her instead of sneaking around behind her back. "You never cared about gardens," she said.
"Well now I do," Tobias replied.
"We promised safety to her parents so I must keep guards around. I will instruct the maids to leave the two of you be. I am trusting that you will not do something foolish," Tabitha said, looking at Tobias to see his face for when he gave the answer. She knew when he was lying.
"There’s nothing to worry about. Now excuse me, I have someone I need to speak to," Tobias said, walking ahead of his mother to go to Hazel.
