Chapter 67: Sneaking around (1)

After a long hour of speaking to Tobias, Hazel was on her way back to join the other women as it was another one of the lady’s turn to speak with Tobias. She had managed to convince him not to leave after promising to meet with him tonight.

Hazel wanted to hit her head on a wall to help her find the answer to why she agreed to sneak out of the room later tonight with Tobias. She was not normally one to break rules especially when it could affect her parents, but she was so caught up in the moment with Tobias that she ended up saying yes.

Hazel did not attempt to take her answer back because she promised him and she was very curious about what he wanted to show her. She would consider this to be the craziest thing she ever did in her youth.

"Why does Hazel Wallace look so distracted?"

Hazel looked around after hearing the familiar face of Grant Henson, Linda’s grandfather. She smiled walking over to Grant as he had become like a grandfather to her. "It is good to see you, Grant."

It was no surprise to see Linda’s grandfather in the palace when he played a big role in the palace’s army and he was starting to be more involved in the court. It was nice to see someone she was familiar with after she was not permitted to speak to her family for three days now.

"Seeing you here means that my granddaughter is close by. I hope that girl hasn’t been giving you any trouble or getting you into trouble. I know that she doesn’t want to be here. Please give me some good news," said Grant.

"You know that I cannot share what the women are doing, but Linda has not gotten into trouble. If she were here, she would ask that you help her leave so she can go to Edgar. She will be jealous to know that I crossed paths with you," Hazel said, looking forward to making Linda jealous over seeing Grant.

Grant chuckled, putting his hands behind his back and keeping watch for who was around so Hazel wouldn’t get in trouble for speaking with him. "I hope that you are enjoying yourself. Your sister has been the talk of the town recently, but you are a special one. I always hoped that Linda would learn a lot from you. My life would be easier if you were my granddaughter."

"I wouldn’t say that. There is much I could learn from Linda. It is only because she has her eyes on someone else that you might worry about her time in the selection. I promise you that she is doing well. She is a Henson after all," said Hazel.

Grand smiled as Hazel always knew what to say to make him cheer up.

"Are you off to see the king or on your way to the court?" Hazel asked as he had many papers in his hands.

"I’m off to see a friend who is offering me something good. It better be since he’s made me leave the comfort of my home. I won’t keep him waiting long and I can’t have you getting in trouble for standing here with me. If the prince was the one on your mind, you only need to do as he says and you’ll go far," Grant advised Hazel.

Hazel could only smile as Grant’s way of thinking was something she could never agree with. She knew that he was one of those men who believed in old rules that the best answer was for a woman to follow a man.

She could not count on one hand how many times he had scolded her or Linda for speaking out of turn. It was something he greatly disliked, but aside from trying to have them follow his rules, Grant was fun to be around.

"You or my Linda deserves to become queen. It would be in her hands if she listened to me, but she wants Edgar so I will have to help her. Run along and get to where you need to be before you find yourself in danger. You should have a maid with you at all times. What is the queen thinking letting you walk around without a guard at least," Grant said, angered by the sight of Hazel alone.

He hated to think that Linda was also the same way. Linda Henson was well-protected all her life. Linda was not some random woman to be walking around all alone. She might be the future queen if she listened to him. It was time their family started aiming high.

With all the whispers Grant heard about the prince planning to make Edgar become a duke, Linda was aiming high enough, but his eyes were going a bit higher now that his friends were proposing plans he could get behind.

"It was wonderful seeing you. I hope to see you at the end when our families come to visit. Goodbye," Hazel said, curtsying before excusing herself from Grant. He had come just at the right time to distract her from thinking about Tobias.

It would have been nice if it was her father she had come across so she could find out what was happening with Helena.

Hazel felt bad for not following Helena out after she left and she couldn’t go to her sister now because she didn’t know where the queen had placed her parents to speak with Helena.

It was unfortunate what happened, but there was nothing Hazel could do other than comfort Helena. For now, she would enjoy the peace with Helena not around. A little space between them might help their relationship to go back to how it was before invitations were sent for them to be in the selection.

Helena would get mad now for Hazel not coming to see her, but in time, she would appreciate that they both had time to themselves to think.

Hazel continued to walk toward the garden where she left the women and near the garden, she saw one of the women named Brooke Miller walking behind a maid.

As they got closer to each other, Brooke looked at Hazel and smiled as a greeting. Hazel returned the greeting. Brooke had been in the background since the selection started and they didn’t have many interactions with each other.

Hazel didn’t know what to make of Brooke yet, but as of right now, it didn’t appear like she had any reason to be wary of Brooke. She would still be cautious, but if they were to end up close to each other, Hazel would be open to having a conversation to learn more about Brooke and her family.

Hazel finally made it back to the garden and already eyes were on her as she walked back to her seat. She knew they had to be curious about her time with Tobias and wondering why Helena was not returning with her, but she was not going to provide them with answers to their questions.

Hazel simply returned to Linda’s who couldn’t be more than happy to have her friend back. However, that happiness wouldn’t last forever when it became known that Hazel spoke to Grant.
