Chapter 85: Shocking proposal (2)

Hazel was just as shocked as everyone else in the ballroom by the sight of Tobias kneeling in front of her. ’What are you doing?" Hazel whispered.

This was not how this day was meant to go. Tobias was to call two names and then she would go up to where the royals were standing. Not whatever this was.

"Marry me," Tobias said out loud for everyone to hear. He specifically wanted his parents to hear from where they stood that he was asking Hazel to marry him right now.

Tobias had randomly chosen two women from the first group because they were the ones his mother was least interested in. Now he was picking the woman who held his interest.

If he were to follow tradition, Hazel would still end up being his wife so why not skip a few steps? Carrying on the selection when his mind was made up was pointless to Tobias. It was only entertaining for the town as it placed bets on who he would pick.

"I cannot go another day without you being engaged to me. Please marry me and allow me to spend the rest of my life with you," Tobias said, smiling as he looked up at Hazel. "Will you marry me?"

She appeared shocked just as her mother beside her which allowed him to see the resemblance the two shared. He thought she looked a lot like her father but now he saw that Hazel was more like her mother if they were side by side.

"I...I," Hazel bit her lip, finding it hard to get the words out of her mouth. She had prepared herself to hear her name be called to stay in the palace for the last round. Hazel hadn’t prepared herself for a proposal with so many people watching it happen.

"I picked out a pretty ring, but who would have ever thought that it takes time for the shape of a flower to be made so the diamond decorating the ring could sit perfectly," said Tobias.

Hazel’s shock over the proposal went away as she laughed at the fact Tobias was without the ring. He had this brilliant idea but the ring was not ready. She forgot about how many people were watching them as she laughed.

"I will marry you, Prince Tobias," she gave her answer. Hazel couldn’t bring herself to think about it any longer to have him kneeling on the floor longer than he should to make it start to feel awkward.

Hazel kept her eyes on Tobias, not wanting to look up to see the queen and king who she would bet didn’t know what Tobias was planning. At some point during the day, they would both be scolded. Hazel just needed it to be known that she was not aware of any of this. She was just as surprised as everyone standing around her.

"This cannot be! This is not how this is done!"

Hazel ended up looking away from Tobias as someone yelled and it sounded like the person was coming their way. "Father," Hazel said, turning to him for help.

"You should say my name but fine," Tobias muttered, getting up to protect Hazel from the bastard who was ruining his engagement. He recognised the voice of someone from the court. Someone with a niece in the selection.

"The prince is-"

"Silence!" Jeffrey ordered, taking back control over the crowd before it would get out of hand. He wasn’t happy with the way Tobias decided to change their plans, but he wouldn’t allow for a greater scene to be made now.

Jeffrey walked down from where he originally stood by the throne and followed Tobias over to the Wallaces. Had Tobias mentioned he wanted to propose to Hazel today instead of waiting, this idea would have been turned down as they were to always follow tradition even when they wanted something else.

"Don’t leave my side or my father will kill me," Tobias whispered to Hazel.

"I want to kill you for putting me in this messy situation," Hazel replied, holding his hand just so she could squeeze it.

"We need to get married first so hold off on trying to kill me for now," Tobias responded.

Jeffrey looked at Tobias, wanting to wipe the smile off of Tobias’s face. His own son had just created a big problem that he had to take care of. Jeffrey wanted to hit Tobias, but at the same time, he liked seeing that Tobias had found a woman he desperately wanted to be around.

Something he feared was Tobias not falling in love.

Jeffrey wasn’t a stranger to the gossip that everyone already knew Hazel would one day be queen. From the beginning, he had also said this to Tabitha. If he were to say that the proposal would be void, Tobias would just end up proposing again whether it be an hour from now or at the end of the final round.

The ending was already spoiled so what needed to be done was to accept it and take control of the situation. Who would want to keep their daughters participating when Tobias had so boldly proposed to Hazel in front of everyone here?

Jeffrey smiled and said, "It seems my son was a little eager and could not go on hiding his feelings for Hazel. This proposal has surprised all of us and certainly goes against what tradition says, but we cannot ignore what it must have taken for him to do this. Seeing that the prince knows who he wants to marry, the selection can come to an end."

"Welcome to the family," Jeffrey said, going forward to hug Hazel to show that he accepted her. This alone should stop the members of the court from speaking up now when there were guests. "Are you sure? He’s my son, but I want to hit him for doing this. I hope your answer wasn’t made by all the pressure," he whispered.

Hazel relaxed in the king’s arms. She was nervous at first because she thought he would have been angry with her. "I am certain, Your Majesty," she answered.

"I will try to leave some of him so you have a husband to marry," Jeffrey said for Tobias to hear. He was not going to let Tobias get off easy for doing this to them.

"You can’t kill your heir. We don’t know for certain if you are still able to get more sons," said Tobias.

Jeffrey closed his eyes as it took all his strength to not grab Tobias by his shirt and pull him forward for a good beating. "Are you certain?" Jeffrey ended up asking Hazel again. He had forgotten just how annoying Tobias could be.

Hazel chuckled, stepping back as their embrace came to an end. "I am certain," she answered once more.

While Jeffrey tried to come to terms with the proposal, Tabitha had not moved from where she stood. Some of their guests had started to clap and were gushing over the proposal while others were upset by the news.

Tobias knew that she had one wish which was for them to follow tradition, but he ignored everything meant to happen today and came up with his own ending for the selection. After going along with what he wanted to do with Hazel, how could he repay her with this?
