Chapter 152: Chapter 152. Blue Dot

There were still many white dots along the way, hidden under completely collapsed ruins. Looking at the location of another blue dot they were approaching, Ed looked up. A faint light was there, but it wasn’t the blue outline he sought. Instead, it was a pale, eerie green.

Seeing this color, Ed frowned. The skulls of skeletons wouldn’t contain such bright soul fire. This color reminded him of the evil spirit they’d encountered on the previous island. He couldn’t help but stop and pull the Locket from his thigh.

Watching Ed’s actions, Elena, walking behind, clenched her fists.

"That light seems to emanate from an evil spirit. Be careful; it can conceal itself to attack."

"Don’t worry, I’m prepared," Elena said, opening her palms to reveal two white strips of cloth etched with pale gold patterns. She used them to bind her fists. As a faint fluorescent light touched them, the gold patterns emitted specks of light. She clenched her fists and shook them at Ed.

The blue dot indicated a spiral difficulty level, which likely referred to the evil spirit before them. It was within their capabilities.

Ed raised the Locker; the surge of magic caused the bronze metal behind the gun to shimmer with blue patterns. Then, with a flick of his left hand, a red card appeared between his index and middle fingers. He swung it forward forcefully.

The red card traced a beautiful arc, flying diagonally into the collapsed hole and landing precisely on the wall shimmering with green light.

A snap of his fingers.

Bang!

A burst of flame erupted, forming two pillars of fire. This red card wasn’t a finished product, but a failed attempt from his practice sessions that he had kept for its decent damage potential.

With the eruption of flames, a hoarse roar came from within, its piercing scream of pain crystal clear.

A green spirit flew directly out of the hole with incredible speed, leaving a green trail. This evil spirit’s appearance only suggested it might have been humanoid; its face was now indistinguishable. Its outstretched hands were sharp claws; it had no legs, only long, tattered clothes trailing behind. Unlike the one Ed had encountered before, it didn’t conceal itself.

Seeing this, Ed didn’t even need Lucilia’s location hints. He pulled the trigger directly.

A burst of bullets shot out from one of the barrels, each enveloped in pure white holy flame.

"Aaaaaah..." A painful scream rang out as the eerie green spirit was riddled with holes. The pain froze it in place.

Elena kicked out, silver light enveloping her leg, making her incredibly fast, like a silver comet. Her right hand stretched back, and as she approached the spirit, the golden patterns on her bandages shone brighter. She slammed her fist down heavily.

It was as if she had punched thin air, but it caused serious damage. The punch shattered most of the evil spirit’s body into green smoke that drifted away. The remaining half, still riddled with bullet holes, was swept upward by her following left fist, vanishing into a cloud of green smoke.

Watching the evil spirit disappear, Elena clapped her hands and turned to Ed, raising an eyebrow.

Ed smiled and gave a thumbs-up. This little princess needs praise once in a while, otherwise she can be very troublesome.

He walked over, looking at the building from which the evil spirit had emerged. The flames from his red card had ignited something inside. Flames erupted from within.

Ed quickly ran toward the building, saying to Elena as he ran, "There was an evil spirit in there. Maybe it was guarding something valuable."

Elena quickly followed, and the two leaped into the hole left by the collapsed wall. The flames inside were burning withered plant branches and roots. In a corner, illuminated by the firelight, they both saw a skeleton. It seemed to have died sitting, now in a supine position.

"Could this be the body of that evil spirit?" Elena asked curiously.

"Very likely," Ed nodded. He then picked up a small twig and poked at the skeleton. The clothes were torn and rotten, and a casual poke revealed bones completely blackened and yellowed with dirt.

As he moved the twig, Ed noticed a blue outline on the side of the thigh bone. He pried it out and took it. The blue outline disappeared.

Ed patted off the grime, revealing the object’s general shape. It looked like a pair of strangely shaped scissors, with a blade that was thick, wide, and shorter than the handle. He cleaned it enough to be usable and gripped it tightly.

He saw the spell carved directly onto the blade, a clear sign of poor craftsmanship. Ed recognized it. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

[Sharpness], a common spell used on weapons to enhance their cutting power.

Even without Elena’s appraisal, Ed knew these scissors were simply exceptionally sharp, capable of cutting through things ordinary scissors couldn’t.

"A very simple magical item," Elena said, looking at the scissors.

"Not even worth a gold sail."

Regarding Elena’s assessment, Ed nodded in strong agreement.

This item was so simple that even he could make it easily in a little time; it was incredibly straightforward.

There was no need to deliberately study engraving. As long as one learned the [Sharpness] spell, its effect could be achieved through simple carving.

The only advantage of these scissors might be that even non-Touchers could use them, because even without infusing magic, the spell passively made the blades sharper.

Some wealthy people who weren’t Touchers liked to collect such things, but since this corpse had become an evil spirit, it was highly likely it had been a Toucher in life.

"Oh well, it’s still a gain, even if it doesn’t match the strength of that evil spirit," Elena said, as if comforting herself.

Finally, the two jumped down and continued in their previously planned direction.

Having already explored all the blue dots along the way, Ed only casually noted the locations of some white dots, wondering if anything was worth investigating.

And so, after clearing away a few skeletons that had revived during their movements, they arrived at the city’s central area.

The buildings here were noticeably better preserved; very few had collapsed, and most stood intact, with some in perfect condition. Their exquisite appearance from centuries ago was clearly visible.

The skeletons here were interesting. Several wore tattered, decaying armor and clutched rusted spears or blades. They were probably soldiers or something similar. However, even with these weapons, they didn’t pose much of a threat and were easily dispatched.

Looking at the spire in the distance, clearly taller than the surrounding buildings, Ed nudged Elena.

"Look at that. Isn’t that spire in the style of the Church of the Holy Mother?"

Following Ed’s beam of light, Elena looked and nodded. "That’s right, that’s the classic architectural style of their churches. It seems the main church here should be over there."

Churches built on a city-wide scale like this occupied a large area, and correspondingly, there was typically only one central church in the entire city.

The two walked across the street, turned onto a side road, and finally saw the entire church in the distance.

It was built in the classic style, but far larger than any church Ed had seen before. He had never visited a large cathedral dedicated to the Holy Mother—only small chapels on islands. For various reasons, he’d never been to the Church’s headquarters.

The church before him looked like a small castle situated in the very heart of the city. Its exaggerated size, along with a large surrounding plaza, demonstrated the strength of the faith here.

In the plaza stood a colossal statue, estimated to be seven or eight meters tall. It was a classic depiction: a woman holding an infant, with a young male child sculpture at her feet, surrounded by a circle of wheat ears as if strolling through a field.

However, it had subtle differences from other Holy Mother statues Ed had seen. He had never seen two identical statues, yet they all shared common elements: the woman holding an infant, the child at her feet, and the wheat ears. These three elements perfectly represented the teachings and authority of the Holy Mother.

Seeing the sculpture, Elena slowly walked over, clasped her hands, and silently bowed her head in prayer. Then she opened her eyes, murmured something silently, and rubbed her fingers together. A faint magical energy flowed out, transforming into blue lines that formed a bird, which then split in two and flew away.

"I’ve already notified Dad and the others. Let’s rest for a while."

Ed simply nodded and took out something to eat. The two sat down on a stone bench beside the plaza. These benches were well-preserved, possessing a unique charm thanks to the surrounding plants and grass.

Ed looked around while eating a large fried chicken leg. He didn’t sense any immediate danger, but the Sword of Mercy required the strength of a double-spiral Toucher to obtain. Therefore, it was obvious that the church ahead contained a powerful evil spirit.
