Chapter 395: Catching up - I

"Before you offered me to come today to the court of public affairs, I was already thinking of asking you something. Rather, I had decided something about you in my mind."

"Oh?" Chiara didn’t bother hiding her expressions. She had let her guard down. "What is it?" The woman was curious to know, not afraid of what it was going to be.

To tell her what I was thinking about, I had to tell her why I was doing it and that was going to be a long answer. However, I felt the need for her to know it so that Chiara would realize how important it was to me. How important she was or rather had become, to me.

"I was almost eight years of age when I lost my mother. My sister was then taken away, not in the complete sense of the word, but to be the next queen, they have to prepare her for it, and in that process she was taken away from me and Catherine. She had her mentors, and since my betrothal was said to prince Terrence, queen Anastasia became my mentor."

"She would exchange letters, books, bindings, and what not to teach Me about her experiences, even though she promised that most of them were going to be when I would come to live with them. I just allowed her to become my mentor, without even knowing if she was truly worthy of it, or not."

"You did not know how cruel she was or what she could do to become a queen and remain one."

"Precisely." I said. That was exactly what I saw after I came to know her intentions for the mistress of his son, who was with his child.

"Do you not think of me?" She narrowed her eyes a little. "Do you not think that I can be cruel to keep my nephew on the throne as well?"

The moment I registered those words, it was clear that she would also be the same as Anastasia was, but there was a difference in between them.

Anastasia, being human, was not one, but Chiara was.

She was empathetic and thoughtful, something anaesthesia had not been, nor had she ever tried to.

"No," I answered, " there is a difference between the two of you. Anaesthesia would never care for any damage she could cause but you, you would try to go with the minimal amount of damage possible."

Chiara’s sharp eyes changed with the expression on her face. She smiled and her eyes shone. " Why thank you, Genevieve. It was quite the perspective of you."

"But am I wrong?"

She looked down for a second before shaking her head and looking back at me. "I didn’t like to admit it, but you’re not wrong. I do not like hurting people even if it is a necessity."

I was not wrong and I knew it. Chiara was different and it only solidified my decision.

"I want you to be my mentor."

Chiara did not seem surprised or even disappointed. "You do?"

"Yes."

"I must ask why."

I smiled. " because I want to be a queen, but I also want to remain myself. I cannot have it in Me to be cruel to people who do not deserve it. As long as I have known you, I know you will help me preserve the humanity I have even.."

Dear God, was I going to say? Was I ready to say it?

"It is going to happen very soon and you cannot even say it." Chiara tsked. "But then again, I never thought that you would get a willing mark. so, I suppose everything can happen in its own time. But for timing, learn to say it."

She shifted in her chair. "To answer your question, yes. Even when one day he will become a vampire, I will still not let your humanity fade away. My mother did that for me, I will do that for you."

I would be quiet grateful to her for that. When the day came, when I would become a vampire, it felt nice to know that I could count on her and my friend.

"How has the girl been?" She asked. " I heard about her from Anna. She has been eating well."

"She has." I confirmed, " and she has also been picking up on everything. I don’t think I can put off telling her everything any longer."

"Then Don’t."

I wanted to roll my eyes at that. It was not easy as it was said. "what am I supposed to tell her? Where was I supposed to begin from? So much has happened in the past two years that I do not even... I wonder where I should begin from. I don’t want to put her to through the horrors—"

"Your sister has been through some horror of her own. I think she can handle yours quite well. Of course, it’s going to be a little setback that she will face, but if you tell her, she will willingly accept your reality. This does not mean you have to tell her everything, Genevieve. You can omit things you feel are not important enough for her to be informed about."

I frowned. "How is it the truth when I omit information from it?"

If I was going to tell my sister the truth, I wanted to do it as it entirely was. Hiding away from her did not seem to be honest, but at the same time, I did not wish to tell her all of it.

She smiled a little. "Every truth has an omission. Every truth has something missing from it. No one knows the entire truth. Because if we did, this would be an entirely different world."

How familiar those words felt. Like I had heard them before and remembered them. Where had I heard them? Had I met her before?

"Now," she stood up, "we will talk about my mentorship for you later, but for now, I think you should answer some questions your sister has. I can hear her growing restless and searching for you."

Chiara looked at the door of the parlor we were inside. "Anna has led her here."
