The Soul System in the Apocalypse-Chapter 90: Strange Development
Chapter 90: Strange Development
As the group was moving, they finally realized the changes that had happened outside. Previously, as they moved, not only did they encounter several survivors that were still looking for supplies, but they would always encounter a large number of zombies.
As long as they made any loud sound, a group of zombies was bound to be attracted towards them. But now, as they moved in the water, it kept making a lot of noise, but nonetheless, they did not see even a single shadow of a zombie.
This kind of development was strange, but at the same time, they were reminded of the time that they had met with the mutated zombie.
At that time, all the zombies in the surroundings had dispersed. Consequently, they did not know what was going on, so, they were caught off guard by the mutated zombie.
Having already learnt their lesson, all of them suddenly became much more careful of their surroundings. At the same time, Jasmine began getting worried about her brother.
Not only was she worried about her brother, but she was also worried about the group that was accompanying her to look for her incompetent brother.
She was reminded of the scene where several people that had accompanied her to look for food were slaughtered by the zombie. That was another memory that she really wanted to forget about considering that all those that had gone out with her to look for food were close.
But in the end, she had to watch as they were killed by the zombie. No matter how hard she had attacked back then, she was not able to save them. And, that was something that she was feeling guilty of.
"Uncle Arthur, why don’t you guys go back? I will continue looking for Xavier by myself. I don’t want to put you at risk." Jasmine looked at Arthur and said in a low voice.
"What are you talking about? We are supposed to be ensuring the security or the governor’s family. Your brother is out, and so are you. So, we have to ensure that the two of you get back to the underground basement safely." Arthur replied dismissively.
Even though he himself had also realized that there was something wrong, he was not willing to abandon either Jasmine or Xavier. Even though he did not like Xavier, since Xavier was his boss’s son, he had to ensure his safety. That was his code as a bodyguard.
"But..." Jasmine wasn’t convinced. She didn’t want to continue being the cause of this group dying. So, she wanted to convince Arthur, but he cut her short.
"There’s no need for you to persuade me. I have already decided, and I’m not going to change my mind about this. What’s more, you will have to keep your voice down. We don’t know anything about what is going on, so, we might attract danger if we continue talking." Arthur said seriously.
Jasmine could only remain silent as she realized that Arthur had no intention of going back. The same could be said about the six as they all had the same expressions on their faces. They were resolute about the matter, completely determined to complete the mission that they had set out to do this time.
Jasmine turned her head around to look and see if either storm or Diana had followed them. But in the end, she was disappointed to realize that there was nobody behind them.
As they continued to move, they got drenched in the rain that was no longer as heavy as before. Thanks to the rain, even though they were making a lot of noise when they were moving in the water, the rain provided cover for them.
Since they did not know about the direction that Xavier had taken, they began going around, trying to find any traces that showed that he had passed anywhere.
After about 10 minutes, they finally found the traces that they had been looking for. Even though they were not sure that they belonged to Xavier, at least, it indicated that someone had just passed at that place not long ago.
Additionally, the storm had finally calmed down, and the sky had also cleared up. And had it not been for the fact that it was already evening, the sun would have been shining by now.
This drastic change in the weather was something that was rare to experience. As of now, other than the swamping water in the city, nobody would have realized that there was a storm not long ago.
Without hesitation, they all began moving toward the direction that the traces led them to. However, they soon realized that the traces were leading towards the outskirts of the city.
This made Jasmine frown. She couldn’t think of any reason that could make her brother go in that direction, even if he was angry at the fact that she had slapped him, and informed him that he was supposed to be a man.
Nonetheless, she continued following. She hoped that until now, her brother had not encountered any danger. Since he had yet to become a mutant warrior, she was sure that if he encountered a zombie that had already reached level two above, he was going to be easily dealt with.
She had already lost her mother who had already become a zombie, and now, she wasn’t looking forward to finding her brother turning into a zombie, or monsters’ food.
Finally, after about 20 minutes of moving around, they reached an area that was slightly high. Here, the water level wasn’t as high as in the center of the city. This was the highest point of the city. In other words, this was where it began rising towards the South, which was in a completely opposite direction of the sea.
After arriving here, they suddenly realized that there were several traces in the surroundings. It was obvious that the traces that had been left here were not left by a single person, but by a large group of people.
"Uncle Arthur, do you think that many people left the city because they thought that it was going to flood?" Jasmine asked as she scrutinized the footprints on the ground.
"I am not sure. But still, I’m having a bad feeling about this. This is completely illogical. Even if people in the city wanted to leave because they thought that it was going to flood soon, at least, I’m sure that there would still be many people in the city. But now, we have not even met a single one of them." Arthur shook his head as he replied.
Just as the group was about to continue moving, they suddenly heard movements not far from them. However, since there were several buildings in the surrounding area, they could not see what was causing the noise.
All of them immediately became alert, holding their specific weapons, beginning to mobilize the energy in their bodies, ready to attack or defend.
Da! Da! Da!
At this point, they suddenly realized that what they were hearing was the sound of approaching footsteps. And, all of them were moving as if they were soldiers.
The eyes of the group immediately lit up. Could it be that the soldiers had already arrived? If that was the case, then, the city was going to be saved!
As they excitedly thought about this, they all looked forward with expectations in their eyes. But still, none of them dared to move forward. This was the apocalypse after all. So, nobody can be sure about something unless they had confirmed it, they were not supposed to trust even their eyes.
As the sound of approaching footsteps got closer, Jasmine and the rest got nervous. At the same time, Jasmine felt a tingling feeling on her skin. This was the first time that she was feeling something like this, but she could not explain it. Still, she felt that something was wrong, but it could also not be explained what it was.
Shortly after, a figure suddenly appeared in front of their vision. But, the moment that they saw this figure, their expressions turned. They did not expect what they were seeing.
Instead of a soldier, a person that was fully armed and was wearing military uniform, something else appeared in front of them. Well, perhaps this might also be considered as a soldier...
A skeleton. And, this skeleton was wearing an armor, and it was holding a bone sword. The skull that did not possess even a single trace of skin was adorned in a shiny bony helmet.
The eye sockets of the skeleton were flickering with a red light. The aura that was around this creature was so oppressive and dark, making all those that were looking at it uncomfortable.
To the group’s horror, they suddenly realized that what had appeared was not just a single skeleton, but instead a group of them. A large group of them!
Subconsciously, the group began retreating. This was due to the oppressive force that was being emitted by the completely organized group of skeletons in front of them.
Like disciplined soldiers, all the skeletons moved in rows and columns. And even after they had seen Jasmine’s group, they didn’t make any move, rather, they continued moving forward.
From Jasmine’s estimation, this group of skeletons was amounting to several thousands of them. This was something that Jasmine had never dreamed of ever coming into contact with, even in the apocalypse.
The skeletons that had appeared in front of them finally stopped. And in the next moment, they began moving to the side, opening a path in between them.
And what was exposed made the eyes of Jasmine and her group widen in surprise. Jasmine on the other hand was horrified and shouted, "Xavier!"
