Chapter 554: Chapter 565: No One Believes

John Brown directly dialed the phone of the Yawk Family’s old man. This old man was hoping he would work for the Yawk Family. Didn’t he also have to give them something to do now and then? If the Yawk Family couldn’t secure a significant position, they might not be able to do that, but just arranging for someone to work at the tax bureau? If they couldn’t do that, then the Yawk Family might as well not mix in this province, nor call themselves a prominent family.

The old man’s call connected quickly, and he directly said, "Kid, you figured it out."

John Brown knew he was referring to pursuing Lucy Campbell and said annoyed, "Figure out what, I have something else to discuss with you."

"Stubborn! What is it?" The old man immediately cursed at John Brown with dissatisfaction, but he didn’t forget John Brown’s business.

"Here’s the situation, I have a relative who has been a temp at the tax bureau for over twenty years, and now they’ve cut him off."

"Just this little thing, you made a call?"

"Haha, I’m afraid they might cut him off again someday, so just make it official, that way no one can cut him."

"Good kid, this will take some doing."

"Even this takes an effort, how have you been mixing over the years?"

"Brat, don’t try to provoke me, I’ll handle it. What’s the name and which bureau?"

John Brown told him about Uncle John’s situation, and the old man hung up directly.

John Brown put down the phone and said, "Uncle John, it’s handled, just wait for the news."

Mrs. White and Mr. White both looked at John Brown in surprise, Mrs. White stammered, "That’s it?"

John Brown nodded, "Yeah, it’s not a big deal."

Mrs. White and Mr. White suddenly became overjoyed, too excited to say anything.

James Smith heard what John Brown said but didn’t catch what the other party said. He laughed and said, "Kid, you really can put on a show, sounds convincing, but do you know this is a bit over the top?"

John Brown smiled and said, "Is that so? Why didn’t I notice?"

James Smith snorted, "Do you know how many temps we have in our system? Each subdivision has dozens, and those who have worked for more than ten years, each subdivision has a few. If you turn Mr. Jones into a permanent staff directly, what about others? Unless they’re all converted, otherwise those people will surely cause a commotion. Now in society, nobody can get it done, they won’t complain, but if one gets it done and others can’t, they will cause endless trouble. No leader wants to stir up such matters."

When Mr. White heard James Smith saying this, his joy faded because there were several in his unit who had worked for over ten years. If he could get in, others couldn’t, there would surely be issues. So, this thing couldn’t be done.

When Mrs. White saw her husband with this expression, her smile disappeared too. She got a bit annoyed at John Brown and said, "John, how could you do this? This is a lifelong matter for your Uncle John, not something to show off with."

John Brown couldn’t help but be a little amused and helpless, "Aunt Mary, Uncle John, this is real. Don’t worry, they will figure it out." James Smith knew about this, how could the Yawk Family not know, they would certainly be flexible.

Emma Campbell immediately followed up, "Aunt Mary, Uncle John, don’t worry, John will surely get Uncle John’s job sorted."

But even with Emma Campbell saying so, Mrs. White and Mr. White just couldn’t believe it, mainly because John Brown made it look too easy. If it was continuing as a temp at the tax bureau, that’d be believable, but turning permanent, how could it be so simple?

Seeing John Brown like this, James Smith felt glee instead, wasn’t this making Mrs. White and Mr. White look down on John Brown more? When it didn’t work out, Emma Campbell would consider this man unreliable, then wouldn’t it soon be over? At that moment, he could directly make a move on Emma, and the thought made him even happier.

Gently swirling his wine glass, James Smith smiled and said, "Kid, when will you be getting a callback? I’m eagerly waiting for the good news here."

Mrs. White quickly said, "Smith Chief, don’t hold a grudge against the child, we still need to ask you for this. You still need to handle it for us. It doesn’t have to be official, as long as they don’t cut him, we will be infinitely grateful."

James Smith grinned and said, "That’s not right. Once you manage to get on the roster, why stay as a temp, Mr. Jones? You can finally get into the roster and enjoy good days ahead. Your niece sure found herself a good boyfriend."

Mrs. White, hearing James Smith’s sarcastic tone, was even more upset with John Brown. She looked sternly at John Brown and said, "Child, how can you not see the bigger picture? Quickly apologize to Chief Smith, or are you really trying to prevent your uncle from even finding a job?"

John Brown was really at a loss with Mrs. White’s constant whining. Even if he explained, nobody would believe him. So he said, "Anyway, being a temp isn’t such a big deal. If I can’t make it happen, then Uncle John can just find another job, and it’ll surely pay more than being a temp."

Mrs. White was even angrier and said, "What do you know? Working in the tax bureau isn’t just about earning money. It’s an identity. Wherever you go, saying you work for the tax bureau earns respect. Anywhere else is just being someone’s employee, even if it pays more, it doesn’t come with respect."

James Smith laughed heartily and said, "No worries, no worries, this kid can even get you onto the roster, that’s more respectable."

Seeing John Brown not apologizing and James Smith still enjoying watching the drama unfold, Mrs. White directed a plea for help towards Michael Johnson. Michael Johnson also gave a bitter smile. At this point, even if James Smith agreed to arrange it, it would be a loss of face, so he couldn’t say anything.

Besides, Michael Johnson was also a rather lustful character. Mrs. White knew what kind of person he was; usually, she wouldn’t connect with him, but seeing Emma Campbell reminded her of this lustful man. Michael Johnson and James Smith were birds of a feather and naturally could see James Smith was attracted to Emma Campbell; he wouldn’t ruin James Smith’s pursuit. Moreover, he also felt that a beauty like Emma Campbell being with John Brown was indeed wasted, less eager to speak out for Mrs. White.

"Kid, want to try calling again to urge them? See if they’ll handle it?" Sarah Grandy crossed her legs, mocking John Brown.

Before John Brown could speak, his phone rang. Seeing it was the old man’s number, he immediately answered. The old man said right away, "It’s been handled. However, doing such a thing in the same bureau is rather taboo, so your relative is transferred to the North Bureau."

John Brown said brightly, "That works too, the North Bureau it is then."

"Kid, from the sound of your voice, aren’t you quite satisfied?"

"No, I wouldn’t dare be unsatisfied."

"That’s better. By the way, think carefully about what I talked to you about."

"Got it." John Brown said and quickly hung up, as he didn’t want to hear the old man nagging about Lucy Campbell anymore.

After hanging up, John Brown said to Mrs. White and Mr. White, "Aunt Mary, Uncle John, it’s all been taken care of, Uncle John’s transferred to the North Bureau."

Mrs. White and Mr. White looked at John Brown’s easy expression and casual speech, wanting to believe him but didn’t dare, not wanting to believe but worried, what if it was true?

"James, this is a serious matter, you better not be joking with your aunt and uncle," Mrs. White said cautiously, looking at John Brown.

Emma Campbell, too, was a bit displeased and said, "Aunt Mary, James handles things reliably. If he says it’s done, it’s done."

Emma’s personality was familiar to Mrs. White, but this matter seemed so difficult that John Brown handled it with just a phone call, truly making them doubt.

James Smith snorted, "You guys really believe that? If old Mr. Jones could really get transferred to the North Bureau, then I’ll write my surname Smith backward." This guy felt his surname Smith was top-notch, already saying it twice.

John Brown couldn’t be bothered with him. Standing up, he said, "Aunt Mary, Uncle John, we’ve nearly finished eating. I think even if it’s done, the paperwork will take a while. And though this matter’s not within the rules, don’t spread the word."

James Smith immediately said, "What’s up? Kid, you’re leaving already? If you leave, I’ll tell you this matter I absolutely won’t deal with anymore."

John Brown smiled casually, "Thanks, but for this matter, indeed no need to trouble you."

James Smith snorted with little interest staying here anymore. Thinking about waiting until Uncle John couldn’t get transferred, then he could extend a hand to likely draw closer to Emma Campbell, he swung his arm and left the private room directly.

However, just as he walked out, he halted, and respectfully said to one of the people passing by, "Hello, Uncle Johnson."

And the person, with a wide smile, approached James Smith, surprising him a bit. This Uncle Johnson held quite a position of power, though James Smith knew him, Uncle Johnson never considered James Smith worth his attention. Today, being so kind, truly lifted James Smith’s stature, making him think Emma Campbell should see that he indeed had capability, quickly stepping forward with a humble smile, yet secretly carrying intense delight.
