"What are you doing?" She asked and looked up at him.

He smirked at her and using one hand he pulled open the huge doors. Mauve winced at the bright light, they weren't in the sun but the sun's glare was hot enough to make her eyes sting.

Jael didn't hesitate, he took a step forward and another step. Mauve gasped and closed her eyes.

Jael stopped walking and chuckled, "You won't see if you don't open your eyes. You're acting worse than a vampire who hasn't seen daylight in centuries."

"I am worried about you." She blurted out, still closing her eyes.

"I understand the sentiment but I am not some Paler that would dissipate under the sun. Now open them, else this will all be for not." Jael scolded.

Mauve slowly opened her eyes and immediately realized they were outside but they weren't standing directly under the sun. "Oh, you could have warned me."

There was a shade that extended a full five feet out of the castle walls. Mauve looked up to see that the shade was all the way from the top but about half the castle walls. She turned her neck as she took in the rest of her environment.

She remembered the scenery from when she had first come to the castle. Not much has changed. The bushes still look like they needed a trim but at least the path that led out was in good shape.

He carefully dropped her on the ground. "Go on," he cajole as she stared at him unsure of what to do.

Mauve took a step, another step, and then she ran full swing out of the shade while Jael leaned closer to the wall.

"Don't go too far," he called out when she wouldn't stop running.

"I know," she giggled and rushed closer but didn't come under the shade.

She raised her head to the sun and closed her eyes feeling the heat of the sun on her face. She grinned and spun again while Jael watched her with a frown as he shrank further away from the sun.

"Why didn't you tell me about this?" She asked, still standing out in the sun.

"You didn't ask, besides you saw this when you came in. It is not exactly hard to figure out."

Mauve opened her mouth to speak but immediately closed it and pouted as she realized she won't be able to step out of the castle without supervision as some child.

"What?" Jael asked. "You suddenly looked displeased.

"No, I am fine. Thank you." She mumbled with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

Jael's frown deepened and he pushed himself away from the wall and approached her, he didn't step out of the shade. "Are you ready to go inside now?" He asked.

"Huh? I just got here." Her face fell.

"I can't stay out here for as long as you want even though there is a shade being out here makes my skin crawl."

"I see," her voice was low as she spoke. "I can head in now."

Jael glared at her. "Fine, five more minutes." He said and rushed back to the walls.

Mauve grinned and attempted to walk further but she knew it would only get her a scolding from him so she settled for taking a few steps forward and backward. She played with the grass and resisted the urge to touch the ground with her fingers.

"Time up!" Jael said.

Mauve pouted and slowly trod towards him, she glared at him and he grabbed her hand. He pushed open the doors and before she could say a word he pulled her in and closed the doors.

Mauve squinted as her eyes tried to adjust to the candlelight. She heard Jael groan slightly beside her before he started walking. She looked at him and thought there was something slightly off but he didn't give her any chance to dwell on it as he was already pulling her away.

He pulled up the stairs, she flinched trying her best not to scream. It didn't hurt but it was a bit annoying to be pulled around like this. She opened her mouth to complain and that was when she realized he was leading her up another set of stairs instead of her room.

"Where are we going?" She asked.

He ignored her and stopped then he lifted her across his arms as though she weighed nothing.

"I can walk," she screeched.

"Shush," he scolded. "You'll wake the house."

Mauve reddened, the thought of someone seeing them now was not something she agreed with. She clamped her hand over her mouth and followed his order. There was no point arguing, she could tell Jael had no plans to let her go.

He didn't stop on the library floor, instead, he went up the next stairs and another. This floor was dark and Mauve blinked but she could see a thing. He didn't slow down however and she felt him go up another flight of stairs.

He stopped suddenly and placed her on the ground. Mauve held on to him afraid that she would fall or worse. He grabbed her hand and steadied her.

"Don't worry, you are fine."

"Where are we?" She asked, blinking rapidly.

"Upstairs," he said without adding more information.

Mauve glared at him. "I know, it is pretty dark here. Why are we here?"

"Patience," he said and slowly let go of her hand.

She tried to grab him as she cried, "Don't leave me."

Jael chuckled, "Scared of the dark, are you?"

"Which is normal. I know an entire species that don't live in the dark."

"Touche." He said and she heard a bolt slide out of place.

"What is that?" She asked as her arms flailed around in the dark.

She touched the wall and she relaxed, knowing that she wasn't about to fall off some cliff was a relief.

Jael didn't respond, instead, she heard another bolt slide out of place, and then a lock turned twice. Maybe squinted, hoping it would help her see better. It didn't. She couldn't even see her hand in front of her face.

Jael was taking his time, she was quite certain, this was on purpose.

"What is taking so long?" She heard herself scream. She was getting irritated and not being able to see annoyed her.

"Mauve, could it be that you don't like surprises?"

"This isn't a surprise, this is torture. I can't see, can't move for fear I will fall and a part of me fears you might leave me trapped here."

"You think very little of me," he mumbled.

Before she could reply, he grabbed her waist and Mauve yelped. She was not expecting him to touch her. His cold hands sent a shiver up her back. She squirmed in his grip as he moved her from one end to the other.

"Stand still," he uttered. "You don't want to fall off the stairs."

Mauve stiffen as a wooden block for fear of falling, her suspicions weren't far off.

"Don't move an inch," Jael ordered.

Mauve flinched, she couldn't comprehend what this was about. It didn't help that Jael was scaring her. She held her breath as she waited for whatever was coming.

She heard the crank of an old door turn and the sound of it being pulled open. Mauve winced and closed her eyes as bright light hit her. She tried to open it immediately but she ended up squinting.

She blinked against the sunlight, the rays stopped by her feet. She looked to her left and Jael was hiding behind the door. Well, she wouldn't say hiding but it was obvious he preferred if the sun didn't touch him.

"Come on now, go out. I can cower like this forever. Hurry before I change my mind and shut the door."

Mauve didn't need anyone to tell her what to do, she raced out the door just as Jael said, "Don't take too long."

She nodded vigorously even though he couldn't see her as he hid behind the door. As soon as stepped out, Mauve heard the door close behind her. She turned around and it was indeed close with no other option, she took a step forward and stepped out into the sunlight.

Mauve was on the rooftop, she could clearly see that. The clouds were so close she felt as though if she stretched out her hand to touch the clouds it would make contact even though she knew that wasn't possible.

However, that wasn't the site that made her mouth fall open. It was a mess but Mauve recognized it without any help. She ran forward without hesitation.

They were all pretty dry, she could easily tell that nobody has been up here for years. She picked up a broken stem and it scattered in her hands. Mauve face lit up as her imagination went into overdrive. This was awesome, she would not only get sunlight but a hobby too.
