Chapter 78: 78. The Library Isn't For Sleeping

She closed the door with a loud thud and leaned against it. She rubbed her neck but the holes had already closed up. The only thing that reminded her of the incident was the blood on her hands and the remnant of the fear she could still feel.

She wiped her hands on the black dress and slowly pushed herself off the door. She closed her eyes, giving herself a moment before she took a step away from the door.

She walked past his room and the next room. She knew the human was staying there, she could tell. She approached the stairs and froze, she could tell someone was coming and it wasn't someone she was happy to see.

She instinctively reached for her neck and tried to wipe off anything that would give her away. She kept her expression and her back straight as she walked up the stairs.

She could feel his stare as he stood on top of the stairs but she refused to meet his gaze. She kept her gaze straight ahead, completely ignoring him.

He didn't move from the top of the stairs and he stood directly in the middle so she wouldn't be able to pass unless he moved out of the way.

"Do I have to tell you to move out of the way?" She slowly raised her head to look at him.

She wasn't in the mood for any of this and if he wasn't careful he would be at the receiving end of her anger.

"What happened to you?" He asked. His voice sounded pretty low, she could tell he was angry.

"None of your business, now get out of my way."

"Jevera…"

"Lady, Damon. Lady to you." She scolded.

"My apologies, milady," he said and bowed a little. "Are you in pain?"

"Thank you for your concern but if you would just move out of my way. I will be just fine." She muttered darkly, glaring at him.

"Did he do this?"

"He? Move Damon, I do not have time for this."

"I understand," he mumbled and slowly moved to the corner so she could go through.

Jevera scoffed and took the last step. She went past him and he remained standing with his head bent. She didn't look back. Just walked ahead to the library doors.

She pushed the doors open and got a whiff of the human. Jevera's expression darkened. How in the blizzard's name was she running into all the wrong people?

"Lady Jevera," the human rushed to her feet and gathered her dress in her hand.

Jevera's eyes turned to slits as she heard the human say her name. She walked forward and looked at her from head to toe without saying a single word. She passed her and picked a book.

With the book in hand, she strolled out of the library without saying anything nor did acknowledge the human's presence.

She closed the door with a loud bang and headed for her room. She shut the door and leaned against it. She had wanted to stay in the library, to sit in the midst of the books and forget all her worries. Forget about how she was failing.

However, she knew there was no way she would be able to stay alone with the human. It had taken everything to not pounce on the vermin but Jael wouldn't have been happy with that and she knew better than to piss him off.

Jevera squeezed her chest and fell to the ground. What did the human have that she didn't?

(...)

Mauve stood with her hands on her dress even after the doors had long shut. The red widow's presence was completely gone but Mauve could still feel the aftereffects of it.

As soon as Lady Jevera had walked into the library, she had known immediately that something was not right and it had immediately made her palms sweaty.

She had offered her greetings because she didn't know what else to do and a part of her had worried that it would piss Lady Jevera off if she didn't. Somehow, she felt relieved when Lady Jevera ignored her, as though she had escaped something.

She slowly let go of her dress and sat back down. It took a while to return to reading as her mind was all over the place and her emotions were still jumbled.

She finally got engrossed again and the red lady was forgotten as her memory was quickly taken over by the snow lady in the flower field.

"Mauve," a voice called but Mauve fought it.

The flowers she was lying on were soft, there was no way she would let anyone take her away from here

"Mauve," the voice called again. This time they proceeded to vigorously shake her.

Mauve eyes flew open as she prepared to tell profanities at them when she realized she was not in a field of flowers rather she was still in the library and by the crease on the page of the book, her pillow of flowers was none other than the book she had been reading.

"Mill!" she cried, a little startled.

She quickly raised her hands to her face, wiping it excessively for fear that she might have drooled. She looked down at the book and was relieved when she didn't see a wet spot.

"Why didn't you go to your room when you started to feel tired?" Mill looked sternly at Mauve.

Mauve faked a chuckle, "I didn't think I was that tired and I wanted to finish the chapter."

"You could have taken the book to your room. It is definitely better if you fall asleep on the bed than on a wooden table." Mill scolded.

Mauve resisted the urge to tell her that the pages of the book were softer than the wooden table so she had slept soundly. Instead, she said, "It won't happen again."

Mill sighed, "The last meal is ready. Let me help you freshen up before you head for the dining hall unless you would prefer otherwise."

"No, it's perfect," Mauve muttered and rose to her feet. She knew there were sleep lines on her face, she didn't need anybody to tell her.

Mill led the way and they both went to her room together. She sat in front of the dresser as Mill brushed her hair. She let the hair frame Mauve's face and Mauve knew it was to hide the sleep lines.

"Thank you," she muttered to Mill.

"You are welcome. Is there anything else you would like me to do for you?"

"No, alright. The last meal is ready now. I could walk with you."

"I'd appreciate that," Mauve replied and stood up from the dresser.

Mill held the door open for Mauve to go out and Mauve gave her a slight curtsey. Mill smiled as the two of them walked out of the room.

Mauve carefully went down the stairs, making sure she didn't step on her dress. They went past the ballroom and soon got to the dining hall. The guards opened the door and she walked in.

It took all of Mauve's willpower to not freeze when she realized she was the last person to come in. They were all seated ready to dig in, even Jael was already seated.

She hurried her pace and rushed to her seat. "I am so sorry I am late, I did not realize the time."

She stood beside the chair and did a quick curtsey before she took her seat. The servant immediately placed a plate in front of her.

"Where were you?" Jael's voice thundered in the hall.

Mauve jerked, she had not expected him to respond let alone in that tone. "In the library," she softly replied.

"Are you sure about that because Mill had been looking everywhere for you?" He sounded annoyed.

New novel chapt𝒆rs are published on ƒгeewebnovёl.com.

"I was in the library," she repeated.

She had moved further in after Jevera had left, for fear that she would have to deal with Jevera if she returned which would explain why Mill couldn't find her. At least now she knew why Mill sounded so stern.

The woman could have at least warned her, she would have eaten in her room if she knew it was already late, instead of having to deal with this. Erick wasn't hiding his glare and Mauve couldn't even bring herself to look at Jevera's face.

"You wouldn't test me and go up the roof because I asked her to check."

"I didn't," Mauve yelled. She was starting to get annoyed. "She found me in the library..." Mauve bent her head and her eyes darted left and right. "Sleeping."

"What?"

She still kept her gaze down, "I fell asleep in the library." She fiddled with her fingers. She couldn't comprehend why he was angry but she didn't like the way he was talking to her.

He chuckled, "Eat your food Mauve, and next time the library isn't for sleeping."

"I know," she pouted.
