The Web of Knightspur-Chapter 230 - 228
"But God had sent the chosen one’s name down. Can Princess Vida guess who that is? It’s someone that you care a lot about."
As soon as the words were said, everyone looked at Princess Vida as if her words were going to give some form of confirmation.
Princess Vida felt embarrassed. Her heart was beating fast as she turned red. Many things were troubling her and it was evident that she had to say something. Her eyes moved to look at one area. There was only one name that popped into her mind and seeing the lady smile, guaranteed that her assumptions were right.
Princess Vida swallowed hard as she took a deep breath, "Princess Eleanor?" There was a tremble in her tone. Her eyes looked to the side as she hoped that maybe this time someone will tell her that her words were wrong. That it was someone else. But thinking back, it made sense that the Princess said those words as if she knew all along that she was the chosen one.
Princess Eleanor walked out and she stood in front of everyone with a smile on her face. She did not say anything else, but the meaning was clear. She was the one they were looking for. The one they were waiting for.
Priest Erasmus smiled. "Princess Vida is right. The chosen one is the Princess from the Angevin Kingdom."
"How can it be?" Princess Vida whose face was turning bad asked in a loud voice. She had tried to control her emotions and failed but now she had decided to be more clear and open about her thoughts. "It was said that the people of the Angevin Kingdom had only sent Princess Eleanor here because the other Princess was promised to someone else. So how can she be the chosen one when she was not supposed to be here in the first place?"
Princess Vida’s eyes were sharp as she gained confidence as she spoke. Nor did the Emperor or the Crown Prince say anything. Even the other Princesses were deep in thought giving her the confidence that she lacked. "How can God make such a bad decision?"
Princess Vida walked toward the center as she stood in front of the Priest. Her eyes stayed on the man as she said in a loud, confident tone. "The High Priest should consider. The will of God cannot be forced so carelessly."
Priest Erasmus smiled as his lips curled up. "Is Princess Vida questioning my decision?" Although there was a smile on his face, anyone who knew him could tell that he was not in a happy mood. He did not appreciate the way Princess Vida was talking to him.
"I am not." Princess Vida said as she bit on her lips. She could feel the unfriendly eyes glaring at her from time to time, indicating clearly that there were others who were not happy. Princess Vida looked at Lady Fiona, hoping she would represent the Gio family and take her side. After all, Princess Eleanor had disrespected her, but to her surprise, Lady Fiona did not mind her at all.
’Is it because they are under investigation?’ Princess Vida thought but soon she saw Marquess Gio looking at her. Princess Vida understood the meaning behind his gaze. They have helped her as much as they could and now they will no longer take her side anymore. She was on her own.
"Princess Vida, no matter what you think about yourself, I hope you are aware that you are a Princess of a Kingdom. Questioning the will of God is like questioning the Roulux Empire. Is the Princess sure that she is ready to risk the future of her Kingdom just because she could not restrain her jealousy and rage?"
The words were said loud and clear and the whispers surrounding Princess Vida were ever increasing and getting louder. Initially, everyone was questioning the words, and for a brief second, they all even had forgotten that whatever Priest Erasmus was saying were the words of God. And now they have come to a realization, they knew who to listen to and who to ignore. All the nobles who had shown support to Princess Vida previously took a step back. Even if it was before, they would not have thought twice about opposing the High Priest’s words. But after they personally saw what had happened to Marquess Gio’s family, they were afraid.
For the nobles, it did not matter who took the actions. Whether it was the Grand Duke or the Emperor, all they knew was that survival was crucial.
Princess Vida understood that no one would help her. Her eyes moved to the man who she had the most hope of. They were all Crown Prince Richard’s supporters. Their families had also shown their support to him either directly or indirectly. Princess Vida knew that no matter what, the man she loved would at least support her, but he simply looked down at her and sneered coldly.
The shock was too huge for Princess Vida to handle. He was the one she was doing all of this for. The one she was risking the future of her whole country for and yet the man did not even look at her as if she was being silly saying all those words.
Princess Vida laughed at her own silliness, but her eyes were shimmering with tears. She looked at Princess Eleanor who was silent the entire time. Her eyes glowed dangerously as she said, "Congratulations, Princess Eleanor. I just wanted to check if the High Priest had not made any mistake." Her eyes moved towards the man on the podium one last time as she shook her head. "I guess you really are the chosen one."
Princess Eleanor nodded her head as she hugged Princess Vida. It was a happy gesture in front of the people, but the reality was different. Both of them had something to say to one another.
Princess Vida’s nails dug into Princess Eleanor’s back as if she wanted to scratch her with all her might. Her eyes shone with hate as she said in a whisper. "You got lucky Princess, but how long?"
"I will be waiting." Princess Eleanor whispered back as she smiled. Soon she took a step back as she saw Princess Vida going back to her place. It was evident that she was embarrassed, but Princess Eleanor felt that there was something else. Princess Vida was like a hurt tigress waiting for the right time to attack.
"High Priest." Princess Eleanor ignored the unwanted thoughts in her mind as she took a deep breath and looked up at the man with hope filled eyes. She could see the smile on his face.
Princess Vida bowed down to him and the Royal family. It was then that she observed the happiness on Crown Prince Richard’s face.
Crown Prince Richard walked down as he stood in front of Princess Eleanor. His eyes glowed as if he was about to achieve the dream that he had always hoped for. He extended his hand as he looked at Princess Eleanor as he said in a small voice making sure that only they both could hear. "I kept my word, Princess. Now it is your chance to keep your side of the bargain."
Princess Eleanor swallowed. She knew that she had to take hold of his hand at least for now, but her body did not move. Her gaze looked around again in search of the man that she wanted to hold onto and yet he was not there.
’Where are you, Sir Kit?’ Princess Eleanor thought as she swallowed hard.
"What are you waiting for?" The Crown Prince was losing patience. But his words were cut through by a voice that he was all too familiar with.
"The High Priest was clear in his words. The chosen one will decide on the next Crown Prince." Everyone turned around to look at the man who had walked into the hall. People moved aside to give him way as everyone gasped as if they were seeing an unusual sight. "Brother, you should not force Princess Eleanor into something she does not want to do."
Princess Eleanor felt dizzy after hearing that voice. She was not sure how to react to this. Her heart was beating faster and harder as if it would jump out of her body at any moment.
But the reaction of Crown Prince Richard was the complete opposite. His hand that was extended out to her was taken back as it formed a fist. He took a deep breath as he swallowed the curse that was at the tip of his tongue. "What are you doing here?"
"Me?" The man stood in front of Princess Eleanor as he smiled. His eyes had a sweetness that was rare on his face. Princess Eleanor was shocked that she could see the brooch on his clothes with a dragon embedded in it. "I thought I should introduce myself to the chosen Princess. After all, as the High Priest said, she will be the chosen one and as someone with Royal Blood, I should have an equal chance to present myself in front of Princess Eleanor."
The man did not wait for any reaction as he moved forward and held Princess Eleanor’s hand, bowing his head and kissing her palm with care. "Although the Princess had stayed in the mansion, we did not get a chance to officially introduce ourselves." The man smiled. "I am the Grand Duke of the Roulux Empire. Christopher Beaumont."
