Chapter 141: Chapter 141: Watchdog

When Chen Ke ran through the streets with the torn money bags on his back, Lucina, Hall, and Priskin had already started the car. Money bags were stuffed into the backseat and trunk.

“The bag with the colored zipper tag is in my car, right?” Hall asked via radio.

“Yes, that’s correct, but how the hell did you guys lose Chen Ke?” Lucina cursed.

“He went last, with no one covering him,” Hall said.

“Chen Ke, can you hear me? Keep running down the street, stay to the left, I’ll come out at the next intersection,” Priskin said as he stepped on the accelerator and turned the steering wheel right, bursting out of the alley and onto the main street.

“No, no… that’s the opposite direction of Route A, escape according to the planned route,” Chen Ke refused.

The green Holy Diamond was on their car, and if they couldn’t get away immediately, the whole operation would’ve been pointless. Moreover, Chen Ke was confident he could escape the predicament without their presence, as he would actually have more freedom to act alone.

“Don’t play the hero, Chen Ke! I’m coming to get you. Hall, you guys escape according to the original plan,” Lucina shouted angrily.

“Then he’s in your hands, girl!” Priskin pulled the handbrake, turned the wheel left, and the car darted into the next turning.

Chen Ke winded through the alleys between shops and houses, circling the S.W.A.T’s blockade, and all targets with murderous intent towards him were outlined in a circle of red.

Spiritual Vision activated, and Chen Ke’s pupils turned blue.

Compared to the Killing Aura Radar, Spiritual Vision had a slightly greater range.

When more blue human outlines came into his sight, Chen Ke suddenly discovered with delight that those blue outlines were slowly turning red!

Killing Aura Radar could actually stack and coordinate with Spiritual Vision!

Spiritual Vision provided active detection range, Killing Aura Radar identified the targets! It was like killing two birds with one stone.

The only downside was that Spiritual Vision consumed a significant amount of life every second, so it couldn’t be activated continuously.

When Chen Ke turned off Spiritual Vision, the red-outlined targets within its range also disappeared from his view, indicating he couldn’t cheat using this method.

Even so, it was enough; short-term, active, large-range detection, and near-body, persistent, passive detection had already met Chen Ke’s needs for stealth attacks and defense against them.

“Tell me your location, Chen Ke,” Lucina’s voice sounded very anxious.

“I’m navigating through streets and alleys, I’ll be out the other end soon,” Chen Ke replied.

Gunshots came from behind, walls on both sides were hit, spitting out brick fragments, he looked back and raised his gun, shooting dead several S.W.A.T members that had followed into the alley.

Chen Ke had always felt that these people were not part of the United Federation police system, but couldn’t pinpoint why, yet now, he was sure of it.

Although these people were wearing S.W.A.T uniforms, the weapons they carried varied wildly, including the AK series; it was hard to imagine the NATO Alliance would use Eastern bloc weapons.

Before he had run out of the alley, Lucina pulled up in a modified Nissan car to the junction with a screeching halt, swung open the passenger door, and looked anxiously at Chen Ke.

“Your timing couldn’t be better!” Chen Ke threw the torn money bag through the open car window onto the backseat and then climbed in. There wasn’t much money left in the torn bag; most of it had scattered on the road.

“I’m always punctual,” Lucina said, flooring the accelerator and the car shot off immediately.

“Did you pick up Chen Ke?” Hall’s voice came through the earpiece.

“He’s sitting to my right,” Lucina responded.

“Good job, then let’s proceed with the plan,” Hall laughed.

Chen Ke tossed his M16A2 in the back seat, the rifle was simply too long, completely unusable in a car chase shootout, and Lucina handed him an MP5 from beside the seat.

He rolled down the window, about to poke his head out to shoot when Lucina suddenly made a sharp turn, scaring him into quickly pulling back.

“Wait a minute, this isn’t the correct route,” Chen Ke shouted to Lucina, realizing something.

“It’s too congested, that road has 6 traffic lights! I’m taking a detour,” Lucina snapped back.

Chen Ke shook his head; five police cars were already on their tail. He checked the MP5 magazine and then leaned out to shoot back.

The policemen in the cars began to return fire, several MP5Ks spitting flames, as two cars unleashed a car chase shootout on the main street.

“Pihom said there’d be a hacker to help, how do you think he’ll assist?” Hall asked.

“Don’t know, don’t count on it, if he was really going to help, the cops wouldn’t have shown up so early,” Priskin said.

A black S.W.A.T van drove at Chen Ke and Lucina from the left, Lucina pulled the handbrake, swiftly turning right into another avenue.

“Look, it’s a green light,” Chen Ke pointed ahead.

The car quickly passed the intersection, and when the following police cars caught up, the street lights abruptly turned red, causing cross traffic to move and the police cars to brake sharply, narrowly avoiding collisions with civilian vehicles.

“Hall, what’s the situation on your end?” Chen Ke asked.

“Going smoothly, but we’ve got a bit too many cops tailing us, got any ideas…” Halfway through his sentence, an explosion sounded through the earpiece.

Lucina and Chen Ke were shocked, worried that the two might have been blown away. Money was the least of their concerns; the green Holy Diamond was still in their car!

“Hall! Hall! Can you hear me?” Chen Ke unplugged his earpiece, frantically calling into the radio.

“We’re fine, nothing happened to us,” came Priskin’s voice.

“What was that explosion just now?” Lucina asked.

“Freaking incredible, we hit the jackpot. An underground gas pipe blew up, flipping all the cops’ cars behind us,” Hall laughed.

Chen Ke breathed a sigh of relief. Whether it was a coincidence or not, luck was on their side. Just when everyone thought they had victory in the bag, the sound of helicopter rotors came from above—it was the County Police’s chopper.

Chen Ke stuck his head out and saw a blue and white helicopter, with a sniper aboard.

“Can you take him down? If that helicopter is up there, none of us are getting away,” Lucina asked.

“An MP5 can’t shoot that far. The M16 is too long to use inside the car,” Chen Ke shook his head.

He tried to use the Killing Aura Radar to attack the helicopter pilot, but the distance was far too great, a completely naive wish.

Just when Chen Ke was at a loss, the helicopter suddenly spun out of control, plummeting down and crashing into the roof of a shop.

“What happened?” Lucina, hearing the explosion, asked.

“I think someone helped us from the shadows,” Chen Ke took a deep breath.

“What?” Lucina glanced at Chen Ke.

Chen Ke’s phone suddenly vibrated. He pulled it out to see a call from an unknown number. Who would be calling him at a time like this?

He pressed the answer button, hearing a stranger’s male voice.

“Hope that helped you out just now,” the man said.

“Who are you?” Chen Ke asked.

“Don’t worry about names, they’re not important,” the man replied.

“Are you the hacker Bain mentioned?” Chen Ke guessed.

“Not just a hacker,” the man laughed.

“Aren’t you afraid of exposing yourself by calling?” Chen Ke asked.

“Come find me if you dare,” the man’s tone was confident.

“You didn’t call just to show off, did you?” Chen Ke asked.

“There’s a drawbridge up ahead, go that way. That’s what I wanted to tell you,” the man said.

“Understood,” Chen Ke replied.

“By the way, I took the liberty of looking you up and found you to be quite an interesting person. Who knows, maybe we have common goals,” the man chuckled.

“What all did you… see?” Chen Ke hesitated before asking.

“You’ve left less information online than even I have, and your recent actions have all been targeting various Transcendent organizations. Am I right?” the man said.

“How did you come to know all this?” Chen Ke frowned.

“In the cyber era, a little skill is all it takes to gain access to all information. These details have been abused by big corporations and tangled with various criminal activities,” the man explained.

“And you chase down this information and respond in kind, even giving yourself a nickname, the ‘Vigilante’… It’s like you’re…” Chen Ke didn’t finish.

“Like a watchdog sitting between individual privacy and public safety,” the man laughed.

“I’ll remember you,” Chen Ke said.

“I will too, oh, and just a heads up, the drawbridge is coming up,” the man said and hung up.

“Who was that just now?” Lucina asked.

“That hacker, telling us to head for the drawbridge,” Chen Ke answered.

In the distance, a red drawbridge was slowly rising. It was the road out of Holy Oak. Over the bridge, they would reach the countryside between Holy Oak and Raffi Road.
