Chapter 173: Chapter 174: I Never Taught You to Lie
(The chapter title was wrong, it should be Chapter 173, damn it. The chapter title cannot be changed. Fuck.)
Rewinding time by 48 hours, the location is a still-operational seafood processing factory in the Deep Anchor District of Opportunity City.
The temperature in Opportunity City has risen to 30 degrees these past few days, and the humid, sultry air near the seaside makes one’s body slick with sweat.
Bare-chested workers are processing batches of fish and then freezing them with ice blocks for transportation to other cities.
Hainerd, carrying a bag of groceries and water purchased from the supermarket, passed through the workspace of the factory, followed a discreet staircase downward, and arrived at a spacious basement.
In the basement, an old air conditioner hummed, maintaining the temperature at 24 degrees, which was very comfortable.
Before he even opened the green iron door, Hainerd could hear a woman’s breathing from inside.
The basement was not small; it had always been used as a warehouse, but under Pihom’s arrangement, it had now become a secret safe house.
Lucina was wearing mint shorts and a black crop top, doing one-handed push-ups.
Pihom’s doctor had warned Lucina that she had slight internal organ damage and it was best not to do any exercise for a week, but the restless woman didn’t take the doctor’s words to heart.
Her slightly curled dark brown hair tied into a ponytail, her waist wrapped in bandages, and a thick gauze on one side of her cheek, it was a miracle she had survived a Spiritual Ability User’s battle with all limbs intact.
“Isn’t that a bit much for rehabilitation exercise?” Hainerd knew his daughter’s personality and didn’t overly discourage her.
He set the large shopping bag he was carrying aside on a nearby table, pulling out a triple-layer beef burger.
“You know, Dad, exercise cures all diseases,” Lucina stopped her exercise, stretched, and walked to the table.
Hainerd handed the burger to Lucina, then helped his daughter open a large bottle of mineral water.
“Oh, how could I forget this?” Hainerd smiled, pulling out a large box of Twinkies cream-stuffed cakes from the big shopping bag. Lucina laughed and hugged the box of cakes.
Twinkies cream-stuffed cakes were the United Federation’s most popular high-calorie snack, possibly named “Twins” for their modest price and sufficient portion, enough for two kids to share.
Not just popular among children, many young people and adults also favored these cream cakes for their sweet, thick cream flavor and pleasant texture without being too overly sweet.
In summary, it was a snack that could make one forget their fear of obesity.
Lucina’s exercise habits could handle this high-calorie food, and she herself didn’t care much about her weight.
“It’s so good to see you lively and jumping around, my girl,” Hainerd sat nearby, watching Lucina relish her food.
“Me too, Dad,” Lucina touched Hainerd’s somewhat aged hand.
“I was too obsessed with Margaret… with your mother… to the point of refusing to accept reality… and I ignored your feelings,” Hainerd said.
“That’s all in the past now; we have a new beginning, right? Mom would also want us to carry on living normally,” Lucina sat down too.
“Exactly, my girl, you’re right, we should cherish the present,” Hainerd consoled.
“Dad, you surely didn’t come here just to say these things, right?” Lucina looked at Hainerd, understanding her father’s intentions.
“Indeed… You know why I came, just like I know you’re eager to ask me about Chen Ke…” Hainerd smiled.
“He hasn’t visited me; did you guys not tell him where I am? I don’t think it’s necessary to keep this place a secret from him.” Lucina’s tone was slightly anxious.
“It’s not what you think, Lucina. Pihom and I, we now regard him as one of our own, his actions have already proved his role and loyalty to the couriers, just one last step to gather all the couriers from the south and the north and formally introduce him to them,” Hainerd shook his head.
“So, you mean, he… chose not to come?” Lucina frowned, disappointment in her eyes.
“I don’t know; he might be too cautious, or, perhaps, he ran into some trouble; we haven’t been able to contact him these past few days,” Hainerd explained.
“Can’t contact…? What do you mean?” Lucina immediately asked.
“His phone is out of service, either he removed the SIM card, or he’s gone somewhere with no signal,” Hainerd replied.
Lucina slowly stood up, threw the half-eaten burger on the table, and with her eyes fixed on Hainerd, she angrily said, “It seems you all are not in a hurry at all?”
“Don’t get worked up, girl. We need to keep a low profile, remember? Maybe he’s just using his unique way to vanish. Neither Hall nor Priskin came to see you, right?” Hainerd said with a laugh.
“What if Chen Ke is really in trouble? Shouldn’t we confirm that first? You know, after I was kidnapped by those freaks, he immediately pulled me out, and you guys let him disappear for two days?” Lucina was somewhat agitated.
“My girl… my girl, sit down, listen to me carefully, sit down,” Hainerd said, knowing Lucina’s feelings, taking her by the arm to calm her down.
Lucina slowly sat down, looking at Hainerd with pleading eyes.
“You like him, don’t you? I can tell,” Hainerd said.
Lucina didn’t speak, but her breathing quickened.
“But I still want to advise you, stay a little away from him,” Hainerd said calmly.
“I don’t understand what you mean, Dad,” Lucina shook her head.
“Tell me, Lucina, how did he retrieve you from the grasp of those freaks?” Hainerd asked.
Lucina thought for a moment. She wasn’t clear on the details herself since she had fainted when she saw Chen Ke aiming a gun at her, but she did indeed witness him using Spiritual Power to defeat a big guy.
“He’s very capable, Dad, even more skilled than you would think, precise with every shot, an assassin among assassins, also adept in close combat…” Lucina spoke incessantly, certain she would not reveal the information that Chen Ke was a Spiritual Ability User to anyone else.
“My girl… I’ve taught you everything I know, except how to lie, so you can’t lie…” Hainerd said, shaking his head with a wry smile.
Lucina sighed, knowing well that she couldn’t deceive Hainerd.
“And that Chen Ke, he can’t lie either. At this point, I’m not even sure if I should call him Chen Ke, Lin Ke, or Lin Mo…” Hainerd said with a laugh.
“What has he told you?” Lucina asked curiously.
“I once teamed up with a renegade assassin from Si’s consortium a year ago, believe it or not, he looked exactly like Chen Ke. And he’s dead,” Hainerd said calmly.
As he spoke, he reached into his pocket for a pack of cigarettes but, remembering Lucina disliked the smell of tobacco, quietly put it back.
“You told me that Chen Ke was called Lin Ke, and he’s Lin Mo’s brother,” Lucina said with a smile.
“Do you believe that? Lin Ke is Lin Mo’s brother, yet doesn’t know Lin Mo’s sister,” Hainerd laughed.
Lucina remained silent.
“And I haven’t failed to deal with Yasla before, dealing with the Silent Witch isn’t entirely hopeless, but it’s only feasible one-on-one and from a distance. That night’s deal, by Yasla’s standards, neither of you would’ve come back alive,” Hainerd said slowly.
Lucina knew what her father was getting at; he had seen through it all.
“Moreover, he told me that he had dealt with the Silent Witch, I’d rather believe what he said is true, but I can’t believe a man with just a handgun could have rescued you from Yasla’s trap,” Hainerd said.
“Priskin told me they scanned Chen Ke with devices, and found no liquified spiritual energy, he’s not a Spiritual Ability User, and he didn’t use any abilities during the operation,” Lucina said, doing her best to keep Chen Ke’s secrets.
“That’s what is most dangerous about him… he’s either some kind of monster we’ve never seen or he didn’t die back then but lost his memory and gained mysterious power, anyway…” Hainerd analyzed.
“Anyway, he saved me and didn’t do anything that could harm any of us,” Lucina countered.
Hainerd sighed, looking at the anxious Lucina, earnestly said, “Lucina, I’m glad you’ve found someone you can open up to at your age, and I hope you can be happy, but I can’t let my daughter fall into danger loving a demon, those who love demons get devoured by them.”
“Dad… he’s not a demon, I’ve never seen a demon save anyone,” Lucina said.
