Chapter 37: Auction... Started

***

The next day.

Morning arrived, and a loud announcement echoed from the top of the auction tower, informing everyone that the auction would soon begin.

Cultivators from all corners of the city arrived, flying on their swords toward the tower. Some walked straight in after presenting their participant tokens, while others had to register first.

The flow of qi entering his body stopped as Gu Qinghe slowly opened his eyes. He stood up and walked forward, sliding open the door of his room.

The two clan elders watched as Gu Qinghe stepped outside. They immediately followed, standing right behind him.

His eyes fixed downward as he narrowed them, watching cultivators enter the main hall one by one and take their seats.

"My goal is only to obtain that pill. If you wish to bid on other items, I won’t stop you," Gu Qinghe said.

"Understood, Young Master Gu."

Just as Gu Qinghe was about to return to his room, his steps halted when a woman’s voice called out to him from the floor below.

He walked back toward the railing and saw Grand Elder Lin Ruyue standing there, notably not wearing the uniform of the Yin-Yang Sect.

"Junior Gu Qinghe!"

"Young Master. Is she—"

"Let her come up. She’s a friend," Gu Qinghe replied coldly. The elder nodded.

One of the elders headed downstairs to bring Lin Ruyue up, while Gu Qinghe returned to his room.

A teapot and two cups rested on the wooden table inside. The pot contained the finest wine in the city—no one would refuse such a drink.

Before long, Gu Qinghe stood to welcome Lin Ruyue’s arrival. A wide smile appeared on his face as he greeted her and praised her punctuality.

"It’s fine. She’s a friend. You may wait outside," Gu Qinghe said.

The two clan elders obediently nodded and left the room, leaving Gu Qinghe alone with Lin Ruyue.

The woman felt pleased and honored to see the Gu Clan welcoming her so warmly.

With a small movement of qi through his hand, Gu Qinghe poured wine from the pot into both cups. Lin Ruyue glanced at the drink and, without hesitation, took a sip.

Gu Qinghe drank as well, though he had already prepared precautions in case anything went wrong.

"I feel sorry for Li Xiaoman. She and the others have to learn to rely on themselves," Gu Qinghe said.

"In the end, the pursuit of power and the dao can only be done alone. That’s a consequence everyone must accept," Lin Ruyue replied.

Gu Qinghe nodded a few times before pouring more wine into Lin Ruyue’s cup.

They chatted about many things while enjoying the wine. With every sip Lin Ruyue took, Gu Qinghe carefully observed her.

"This drink is good. I like it."

"The best wine in the city. I thought it would be far better than ordinary tea," Gu Qinghe replied.

A bell rang from the hall below.

Both Gu Qinghe and Lin Ruyue turned their attention forward. They stepped out of the room and stood beside the corridor railing, looking down at a woman in a beautiful dress who would be hosting the auction.

"Welcome to the Minghua Auction Tower."

"We have prepared many items for today’s auction. There are three main items."

"The Seventh Heavenly Dragon Sword. The Three Vajra Bodies Technique. And the Spirit Infant Pill."

Gu Qinghe narrowed his eyes as he looked at the Spirit Infant Pill—the item he had to obtain no matter the cost.

He then glanced at Lin Ruyue and saw the ambition in her eyes as she looked at the pill.

"The main auction items will be presented at the end. We will auction the other items first," the host said.

"What should we do, Young Master?" one of the elders asked.

"I won’t place any bids until that pill appears. You may compete however you like," Gu Qinghe replied.

"We understand, Young Master."

Gu Qinghe turned around and walked back into his room, with Lin Ruyue following beside him.

The two sat down again next to the wooden table holding the wine pot. Once more, Gu Qinghe poured wine into their cups, and they drank together.

"You haven’t forgotten our agreement, have you?" Lin Ruyue asked as she set her cup down.

"Of course not. I want to save my mother. That pill means nothing compared to Wang Yunxi’s life."

Lin Ruyue smiled. She poured herself more wine and drank slowly.

Gu Qinghe gave a faint smile as he watched her clearly becoming fond of the drink.

The auction continued. Many cultivators called out increasingly high bids for the items they wanted.

Clans and sects competed fiercely for items that suited their specific needs.

Even though Gu Qinghe remained inside his room, the noise from the auction hall was loud enough to reach his ears.

Lin Ruyue heard it as well—the shouting, the rising amounts of spirit stones being offered.

Before long, all the items had been sold except the three main treasures.

The female host suddenly turned toward the Gu Clan’s room.

"Young Master Gu Qinghe. You haven’t made a single bid since the beginning. I’ll allow you to start the main auction this time."

Everyone’s attention immediately shifted to the second floor, where the two elders stood without Gu Qinghe.

"You’re quite cunning, woman. I bid 1,000,000 spirit stones for the Spirit Infant Pill!"

Everyone was shocked, including the host.

Originally, she had intended to start the bidding at 500,000. She hadn’t expected Qinghe’s offer to be double that.

"I thought you came for the Seventh Heavenly Dragon Sword. Turns out it’s just for an ordinary pill to break into Nascent Soul."

"Has the Gu Clan’s intelligence declined?" someone from the Ling Clan mocked.

Gu Qinghe calmly took a sip of his wine, opened his room door, and glanced to the side.

A woman from the Ling Clan was mocking him—an arrogant woman who wasn’t even worthy of standing on equal footing with the Gu Clan.

"I don’t want to hear anything from people who couldn’t even break into my room with their spiritual sense!"

"Qinghe! Do you know what you’re saying?" the woman snapped.

Gu Qinghe crossed his arms and stared forward.

"The Ling Clan may be the best at pill refinement. But your soul power is so weak it was shattered by a simple soul-locking formation."

"Gu Qinghe! I’ll show you the true soul power of the Ling Clan!" the woman shouted.

She formed hand seals, activating a soul rune. Golden light appeared before her face, gradually shaping into a roaring lion.

Gu Qinghe refused to be outdone.

His soul power emerged and manifested into a golden dragon.

The lion and dragon clashed in midair, but Gu Qinghe’s golden dragon quickly coiled around the lion.

BLAST!

A soul explosion erupted, destroying the golden lion. The woman was forced backward and spat out blood as she fell.

The three elders accompanying her immediately moved to protect her.

On Qinghe’s side, the two elders and Lin Ruyue stood protectively beside him.

Tension filled the entire second floor, causing panic among the crowd.

"Haha! I’m delighted to see my auction so lively."

A streak of blue light shot forward and appeared between them.

A powerful gust of wind spread through the hall as Gu Qinghe looked at the old man who had arrived.

He was the owner of the Minghua Auction Tower—and a Nascent Soul cultivator.

With his strength, he was more than capable of suppressing a conflict between two great clans.

"It’s always a risk for us to face situations like this, especially when we are honored by the presence of two great clans of the Song Kingdom," the old man said calmly.

"I hope you will focus on the auction and avoid unnecessary fights. You can settle your grievances after the auction ends."

Gu Qinghe withdrew his soul power, then walked back toward the corridor railing, focusing his gaze on the female host.

"Continue the auction," Gu Qinghe said.

"Very well, Young Master Gu."
