Chapter 36: Night Before Auction

The elder nodded after hearing what Gu Qinghe needed and left the place alone.

Gu Qinghe tapped his bag of holding, causing a cauldron to appear before him. The elder who remained beside him looked clearly confused.

It was the same cauldron Gu Qinghe had once used when refining the Yin-Yang Balancing Pill.

"What exactly are you planning to do, Young Master?" the elder asked.

"A simple preventive measure," Gu Qinghe replied firmly.

"Against what?"

"You’ll find out tomorrow," Gu Qinghe said.

The cauldron had already been prepared, but the pill refinement process had not yet begun. Gu Qinghe would only start once the ingredients he needed were ready.

While waiting, Gu Qinghe used the time to cultivate, while the clan elder kept watch in the room.

Right in the middle of his cultivation, a small explosion suddenly occurred outside the door of Gu Qinghe’s chamber.

It wasn’t the kind of small explosion caused by a spell attack. Instead, it was the detonation of a trace of spiritual sense from another cultivator trying to break into Gu Qinghe’s room. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Though small, it was more than enough to startle him. Not wanting to ignore it, Gu Qinghe touched his forehead and sent his own spiritual sense flying out of the room.

Fortunately for him, the earlier explosion of spiritual sense had left behind a trace of qi that he could read.

He followed that trail of qi until he arrived at another room located on the same floor.

Gu Qinghe’s spiritual sense slipped inside and saw four people in the room—three men and one woman.

They were wearing luxurious robes that clearly represented a clan rather than a sect. Gu Qinghe recognized exactly which clan they belonged to.

He immediately withdrew his spiritual sense. His eyes opened, and he rose to his feet.

"What is it, Young Master?"

"It seems we have competitors for this pill," Qinghe replied.

"Competitors? But who?" the elder asked.

"The Ling Clan."

The elder looked shocked. The Ling Clan was one of the four great clans of the Song Kingdom, right after the Gu, Wei, and Zhu Clans.

If the Ling Clan was indeed here, then it was almost certain they were aiming for the main item of this auction.

There was a strong possibility that the Gu Clan and the Ling Clan would end up competing for the Spirit Infant Pill.

Among all the pills being auctioned today, only that one possessed the highest value and quality for cultivators attempting to break through to the Nascent Soul realm.

"It seems we’ll have to compete with them for the Spirit Infant Pill."

Gu Qinghe had already realized that, but he would not give up. No matter what, the Gu Clan had to obtain that pill—not any other clan.

Time continued to pass. Several spiritual senses attempted to peek into the Gu Clan’s room. Every auction house had an obligation to protect the privacy of its participants.

They would never reveal the occupants of each room. Because of that, using spiritual sense had become an effective way to find out who was staying in the rooms on the second floor of the auction tower.

The elder felt impressed. He saw that the formation used in their room looked like a common one—something similar to a soul-space locking formation.

However, Gu Qinghe was an Early Core Formation cultivator.

In his opinion, the formation Gu Qinghe used should have some flaws. Yet so far, not a single cultivator’s spiritual sense had managed to break through it.

He turned to look at Gu Qinghe. The young man was still sitting cross-legged on the floor, meditating as streams of qi flowed into his body.

Day turned into night. Elder Lin Ruyue still had not shown any sign of arriving at the auction house.

Gu Qinghe guessed she would come tomorrow, after the auction began.

"Young Master Gu."

Gu Qinghe slowly opened his eyes. His cultivation was interrupted as he allowed the man standing outside his door to enter.

The man stepped inside and lowered his head in respect toward Gu Qinghe.

"How?" Gu Qinghe asked.

"I’ve gathered the materials you requested. Everything is stored inside this token."

He handed the token over. Gu Qinghe opened it and saw five pill ingredients floating in front of him. The elder had successfully collected everything he needed.

"Good," Gu Qinghe said. "I need some time alone. You should all wait outside and keep watch."

The two elders nodded in understanding. They bowed with clasped hands before taking their leave and exiting the Gu Clan’s room.

Now alone, Gu Qinghe immediately tossed the ingredients into the cauldron and began refining the pill.

There was a specific reason why he chose to refine a pill right before the auction. It was all for Lin Ruyue.

The two clan elders arrived outside the auction tower and settled into a nearby tavern while keeping an eye on the surroundings.

Since their cultivation levels were far higher than most cultivators present, no one dared to disturb them.

Five hours passed. Suddenly, a powerful burst of qi erupted, startling everyone inside the auction tower.

Many cultivators sensed the surge of qi, but none of them knew where it had come from.

The two elders felt it as well. They immediately vanished and rushed back into the auction tower, appearing right in front of the Gu Clan’s room on the second floor.

"Young Master?" one of them called.

The door opened. Gu Qinghe stepped out and walked to the edge of the corridor overlooking the auction podium below.

"What was that just now?" they asked.

"Just part of my plan. One of you is forbidden from drinking from the teapot in that room," Gu Qinghe replied.

The elders exchanged glances before nodding obediently without further questions.

Just as Gu Qinghe stood by the railing, someone suddenly called out to him from the side.

"Young Master Gu Qinghe?"

He turned his head. A beautiful woman in an elegant dress was walking gracefully toward him.

Gu Qinghe narrowed his eyes, curious about her identity. She clearly wasn’t from any major clan.

"I didn’t expect an auction in a small city like Minghua to attract a young master from a great clan like the Gu Clan," the woman said.

"There’s no rule forbidding major clans from attending auctions here. It just so happens they have something I need," Gu Qinghe replied.

The woman stepped closer. The two elders tried to stop her, but Gu Qinghe showed no objection.

In the end, the two of them stood side by side at the railing, watching the servants in the auction tower prepare decorations for tomorrow’s event.

"I could help you, Young Master Gu," the woman said.

"There’s no need. We don’t require assistance from your clan," Gu Qinghe replied plainly.

The woman smiled widely before turning to look at him. Gu Qinghe realized she was studying his face with a strange expression.

"You will need my help."

Not long after, she turned and returned to her clan’s room, leaving Gu Qinghe standing there.

One of the elders whispered, "You shouldn’t listen to her. She might be trying to take advantage of you, Young Master."

"I know," Gu Qinghe said calmly. "I’m not that easy to fool."
