Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 14: Don’t Shoulder Everything by Yourself
The light shone on her small, palm-sized face, and even in just a few days, she had lost a lot of weight.
"Do you think Mark dared to do this because of anything other than knowing you’re my wife, acting with impunity?" Winston Valentine scoffed, "If we don’t put a damper on his behavior, do you think he’ll restrain himself in the future?"
Vera Yves naturally understood Mark’s nature and couldn’t help but say, "You can punish him any way you want as long as it doesn’t involve sending him to jail!"
Punish him? It was no more than giving him a beating, and even then she would come seeking explanation, what more punishment could there be?
Winston didn’t respond further and took his clothes to the bathroom for a shower.
After washing up, he opened his computer to start handling some documents.
Around ten o’clock, a servant came over, saying that Old Mrs. Valentine had made soup for the two of them.
Vera placed the soup on Winston’s desk, "Do you want a bowl?"
Winston’s gaze fell on the back of her hand. Vera’s skin was naturally fair, and although the burn on the back of her hand had healed, it still appeared slightly red. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
His wife really had a high tolerance for pain.
After drinking the soup, Winston turned off the computer and went to bed.
Vera switched off the lights, lifted the covers, and lay down on the bed with her back to him.
The room was very quiet, and outside, the sound of crickets could be heard. Vera found it hard to sleep. Grandma wanted them to take walks and sent people with soup, probably worried he might go see Cecilia Vaughn.
She couldn’t help but wonder when he wouldn’t be able to hold out anymore, would it be after she fell asleep?
While she was lost in her thoughts, Winston suddenly turned over and pulled her into his arms.
Feeling the warmth behind her, Vera’s body stiffened a bit.
The warm breath hit the back of her ear as his hand slowly moved down, and Vera didn’t understand his intention.
His broad palm gradually encompassed her hand, gently rubbing it, his breath shallow in her ear; Vera wasn’t sure if he was awake or if he had fallen asleep.
Early the next morning, when Vera awoke, Winston was no longer in the room.
The urgent ringing of the phone startled Vera out of her slumber. As she picked up, she heard Hannah Hayes’ crying voice, "Vera, there are a lot of people in uniforms at the hospital. They want to take Mark away, you need to come quickly!"
Vera sat up, "What did you say?"
"The Valentine Family has called the police! Now they want to detain Mark! Vera, what are we going to do?" Hannah was already in tears as she spoke.
"Mom, don’t cry, I’ll be at the hospital right away."
Vera got dressed quickly and washed up simply, then hurried out of the room, and as she went out, she happened to see Winston coming out of Cecilia Vaughn’s room.
A wave of bitterness welled up in Vera’s heart. How could she have thought she could ever be more important to him than Cecilia? She felt utterly ridiculous!
Vera didn’t look at him again and headed downstairs.
When Winston glanced over, he only caught a glimpse of her back.
Arriving at the hospital, Vera saw several officers guarding Mark’s ward.
Seeing her, Hannah approached, crying, "They’re inside questioning him, and someone has gone to consult the doctor about his condition. Vera, what should we do? Are they going to take Mark away?"
"Mom, don’t worry," Vera held her hand.
"Vera, didn’t you tell Old Mrs. Valentine? How can The Valentine Family do this?" Hannah cried and cursed simultaneously, "Winston Valentine really is a scoundrel. He doesn’t treat you as his wife, nor does he see The Yves Family as family! If I had known, I would never have let you marry him!"
"Mom!" Vera squeezed her hand tightly.
"Vera." A figure rushed over.
Vera hurried over to him, "Seth, I’m really sorry to trouble you to come all the way here."
"No need to be polite with me." Seth Quinn patted her shoulder, "Don’t worry, I’ll go find out what’s going on first."
Mark’s health didn’t permit him to be discharged, so in the end, with Seth’s help, they secured his release on bail.
"Vera, your brother’s arrest warrants indicate the police have gathered some evidence." Seth’s expression was serious, "It’s still under investigation, so we still have room to maneuver, but the other party is The Valentine Family..."
Vera naturally understood what he meant. How many people in all of Imperia would dare to go against The Valentine?
Even though Seth was one of Imperia’s top lawyers, he wouldn’t dare to stand against The Valentine Family.
"Vera, I would suggest you communicate with The Valentine to find out what evidence they’ve provided to the police and whether they’ve left you any options."
"I understand, thank you, Seth."
"No need for thanks, keep in touch, I’ll head back to the firm."
After seeing Seth off, Vera’s face turned pale.
Hannah’s eyes were red and swollen from crying, "Vera, Mark can’t go to jail, you need to think of something!"
Winston could ignore their marriage and call the police, what could she possibly do?
Kneel to Cecilia and then divorce Winston?
Vera had no desire to return to the old house and play her part with Winston; she stayed at the hospital with Mark and sent Hannah home to rest.
During this time, Old Mrs. Valentine called her, but she excused herself by saying that there were matters at home and couldn’t return to the old house.
"Vera, tell Grandma, is Winston making you unhappy?"
Vera clutched her phone tightly, "No, Grandma, I just have some family matters to attend to."
"What family matters? Can Winston help? You two are married, don’t take everything on by yourself."
Tears streamed down her cheeks. Even after humbling herself so, he still wouldn’t let Mark go, what could she do?
"I understand, Grandma."
Hanging up, Vera leaned back against the chair, feeling more exhausted than ever before.
That evening, she fed Mark some porridge. His face was no longer swollen, but having had several teeth knocked out by Winston, he still struggled to speak, "Don’t beg... them, at worst... I’ll just... go to jail!"
Vera glared at him, "You think prison food is good, huh? Our parents raised you all this time just to send you to jail? When will you grow up? When will you learn some sense?"
Seeing her red eyes, Mark averted his gaze, "Only because... you... being a coward..."
Vera shoved another big spoonful of porridge into his mouth, desperately wanting to shut him up.
"Knock, knock, knock." Someone was at the door.
Vera responded, and a man in a tailored suit entered, "Young Madam, Mr. Valentine is outside the hospital, he’d like to see you."
Vera recognized him as Leo Grant, Tristan Valentine’s assistant.
After instructing the caregiver, Vera rose and followed Leo outside.
A black Bentley was parked by the hospital roadside. Leo walked over and opened the back door for her.
Vera got into the car and respectfully greeted, "Dad."
Tristan Valentine nodded and got straight to the point, "I’ve heard your family has been facing some difficulties lately."
Married to Winston for three years, Vera had met Tristan Valentine only a handful of times.
Winston wasn’t close to this father, which made her wonder why Tristan suddenly cared about The Yves Family’s affairs.
Before Vera could respond, Tristan already spoke, "I can help you, but I have one condition."
Though nearing sixty, Tristan was well-maintained, wearing a crisp suit that exuded an air of sophistication and the charm of a mature man, the words he spoke carried the authority of someone in power.
"What condition?"
