Chapter 15: Chapter 15: I Might Consider If You Kneel

"Help treat a person."

Vera Yves looked at him in surprise, after a moment of silence, "Sorry, I no longer practice medicine."

Tristan Valentine gazed out the window, "Mr. Yves taught you everything he knew; it’s just a small favor."

A small favor? Given Tristan Valentine’s status, he could offer the best medical conditions globally. Yet he sought her out? The situation must be very dire.

Vera Yves calmly said, "I am helpless."

Tristan Valentine handed her a medical record, "I’ll give you three days to consider."

Vera Yves hesitated for a moment, took the medical record, and opened the car door to get out.

Vera Yves spent the night at the hospital, and when Hannah Hayes arrived, her eyes were swollen, "Vera, I haven’t dared to tell your dad about this. Maybe you should ask Winston again..."

The Valentine Family had already called the police; their attitude was clear. Begging further would only be self-humiliation.

However, she couldn’t just stand by and watch Mark Yves get imprisoned.

Vera hurried back to the old residence; Winston Valentine hadn’t gone out yet. When he saw Vera enter, he handed his tie to her. Vera hesitated slightly, then approached to take the tie and tiptoed to loop it under his collar.

Sunlight streamed through the window, falling on her slightly pale face.

Winston Valentine took hold of her waist, looking down at her, "Did he come to see you?"

Tristan Valentine had visited her last night, and Winston already knew by morning.

Vera replied with an "Hmm."

Winston increased the grip of his hand, "What did he say?"

Vera winced in pain, but her hands didn’t stop working, "He said he could help Mark Yves, but I need to treat someone for him."

Winston’s face darkened, "Did you agree?"

Vera shook her head, "No."

"Better not." Winston said coldly, "Don’t trouble yourself."

Vera hadn’t interacted much with Tristan Valentine, but there was plenty of gossip about him in the circle.

His marriage with Winston’s mother was long dead; he had another woman outside, and that woman was seriously ill.

Vera said softly, "He gave me three days to think about it."

Winston tightened his grip on her waist, "Are you threatening me?"

Vera tilted her head to look at him, "You could also consider it as my plea, to spare Mark this time."

"Negotiating with me, you are still not qualified!" Winston’s voice was indifferent, his gaze sweeping over the dark circles under her eyes, "He hurt Cecilia, whether to forgive him or not is Cecilia’s decision."

"Knock, knock, knock!" came the urgent knocking at the door.

"Winston, go check on Cecilia..."

Winston released her and quickly walked out the door; his tie wasn’t even fastened yet.

Vera gave a self-mocking laugh; indeed she wasn’t qualified. How could she compare herself to the white moonlight in his heart?

Winston arrived at Cecilia Vaughn’s room; Cecilia was already dressed. She smiled at him, "My mom is just fussing over nothing; I’m already fine. I just want to go out for a walk. Will you accompany me?"

Samantha Warren worriedly said from the side, "You just recovered from the fever, what if..."

"Mom, I’m really fine now."

Winston’s face darkened slightly, "I’ll arrange bodyguards to accompany you."

Cecilia’s smile froze, "Are you blaming me for calling the police?"

Samantha quickly said, "Winston, I’m the one who called the police. Blame me if you must!"

"Calling the police is your right," Winston said in a low voice, "I’m not blaming you; the company’s matters have been delayed too long, I need to go and handle them."

"Then can you drop me off on the way?"

Winston didn’t refuse again, they both went out together.

In the car, Walter Lowell handed Winston some files, and Winston began processing them. Cecilia intended to speak to him but seeing him busy, she leaned against the window instead.

The phone rang, Winston answered, "President Valentine, Young Master Monroe called regarding the Yves Family case, showing great concern..."

Winston’s face darkened, "Since when does the affair between the Valentine and Yves Families need an outsider’s concern?"

Winston cut off the call and tossed the phone aside.

Cecilia was a bit startled, as Winston was usually calm and unflustered. Who could make him so angry? Cecilia looked at him with pitiful eyes, "Am I troubling you?"

That night when Vera returned to the old residence, she waited for him through the night. It was also that night she realized he wouldn’t have called the police for Vera!

Winston kneaded his temple, "No, don’t let your imagination run wild."

The car parked under the company building, Winston got off, "I’ll send bodyguards to protect you, take your time to unwind."

Watching the man’s departing figure, Cecilia fiercely clenched her palm, and her peripheral vision caught sight of his phone left in the car, her eyes flickered.

...

After a bath and changing clothes, Vera rushed back to the hospital.

Hannah looked at her expectantly, "Vera, what did Winston say?"

Vera shook her head at her.

Hannah’s legs gave way, nearly falling. Vera quickly supported her, "Mom, don’t worry, I’ll find another way."

"What other way? If Winston wants Mark imprisoned, who dares to save him?" Hannah said and began crying again, "Is a jail cell a place for people?"

Vera comforted her a few more times and sent her home.

In the afternoon, Vera reviewed the medical record given by Tristan Valentine, it belonged to a woman. If it was an ordinary person with the condition described in the record, they would probably have passed away by now.

In the evening, after feeding Mark, Vera received a call from Linda Young, "Vera, I’m at The Gilded Age now. I just saw your mom!"

Without delay, Vera informed the caregiver and drove to The Gilded Age.

Linda waited at the entrance, they walked inside together, "Your mom didn’t seem hostile, but what could a fifty-something-year-old woman do here?"

What else? Most likely here to see Winston Valentine.

Earlier, on the way, she had called Winston, but he didn’t answer.

Linda pointed to a private room, "I think your mom went into that room. Isn’t that Winston’s bodyguard outside?"

Vera’s eyes darkened as she walked over.

The bodyguard didn’t stop her upon seeing Vera. Vera gripped the door handle; inside came Cecilia Vaughn’s mocking voice, "Sure, as long as you kneel and kowtow to me three times, I can consider sparing your son!"

Furious, Vera pushed open the door, "Mom!"

The private room was crowded yet silent; everyone looked at Hannah Hayes as if watching a clown.

Hannah had shed her usual arrogance and was about to kneel.

Vera rushed over and held her, "What are you doing?"

Hannah grabbed her hand, "Vera, she said as long as I kneel, she can spare Mark!"

"Mom, she won’t!"

Cecilia swirled her wine glass leisurely, "If she doesn’t kneel, I certainly won’t. If she does, I can consider it."

"I’ll kneel!" Hannah said, pushing Vera’s hand away forcefully, and dropped to her knees with a "thud."

"Mom!" Vera rushed over to embrace her, "Even if you kneel, she won’t spare Mark! Don’t be foolish!"

Hannah attempted to bow her head to the floor, "Miss Vaughn, it’s all my Mark’s fault, I’m kowtowing to apologize and beg your mercy to spare him!"

"Did you kowtow?" Cecilia smiled at her, "I don’t seem to have heard it?"
