Too Late to Love Her: When She Divorced, He Fell Apart-Chapter 134: I Won’t Come Looking for You Again
Zoey Adler sighed with a smile and said, "I have to say, Miss Hale is quite pitiful. You’ve been together for almost half a year, right? How come she still doesn’t have any status?"
Tristan Lockwood coldly replied, "Her matters are none of your concern. You can’t be Mrs. Lockwood here either."
"Honestly, I have no interest in the position of Mrs. Lockwood," Zoey remarked indifferently, "Being shackled by family and becoming a tool for men like you to exchange interests? You clarified things with my family, and I’m quite grateful for that."
Tristan curled his lips without any hint of a smile, "So, you’re using me."
Zoey replied, "I wouldn’t call it using. Didn’t you cancel the engagement with me for Miss Hale?"
Though she spoke casually, Zoey was a shrewd person. The situation made it clear that things weren’t going smoothly between Tristan Lockwood and Claire Hale.
Not making the relationship public till now is merely because one party doesn’t want to.
Of course, deep down, Zoey hoped that Claire would play Tristan like a puppet.
After all, seeing a man like Tristan Lockwood fall for a woman is quite an interesting scenario.
The elevator reached the ground floor, and they stepped out simultaneously.
Zoey raised her eyes and saw Claire Hale, momentarily stunned.
Claire’s demeanor had changed significantly since Zoey last saw her. She was in a low-energy state, with her once sharp and beautiful eyes now softened, evoking pity.
Seeing them, Claire was momentarily startled and soon her eyes reddened, looking at Tristan Lockwood with anticipation.
It seemed she was seeking an explanation but was cautious, not daring to cross boundaries.
How pitiful.
As a fellow woman, Zoey inexplicably felt a surge of compassion.
Men in high positions detest women who lower themselves for love the most.
No bargaining, just relentless compromise, even a woman like Zoey found it dull.
She was so proud before, yet ultimately succumbed to Tristan Lockwood.
"It seems you’ve tamed Claire," Zoey remarked.
Tristan ignored her, simply walking forward to Claire and asked, "Why are you here?"
Claire cautiously glanced at Zoey.
Zoey smiled, "You two have a good chat."
Seeing Zoey walk away, Claire lightly tugged at Tristan’s sleeve and said, "Have you been with Miss Adler lately?"
Of course not.
Tristan wanted to say that, but looking at her, he couldn’t help but change his tone, "Hmm."
She was stunned, her voice tinged with tears, "Tristan, didn’t you promise to tell me if you ever wanted to break up?"
"I didn’t say I wanted to break up." Tristan was annoyed, but looking at her pitiful expression, he felt a bit softened, "Zoey and I are just on business matters."
"But lately, you haven’t been replying to my messages," Claire lowered her gaze, with tears streaming down, "I still remember what you said in the private room last time. You said you’ve considered breaking up with me. I’ve been too afraid to ask you about it. Can you give me a clear answer now? This constant cold shoulder is really unbearable."
She cried beautifully, like rain-soaked pear blossoms.
Tristan looked at her, and to say there wasn’t any heartache would be a lie.
But inexplicably, he felt an extreme unfamiliarity with the woman before him, as if seeing her through a veil.
Claire, sobbing, said, "Aside from you in this life, I have no other family. If even you don’t want to bother with me, I really don’t know what to do."
Tristan rubbed his brow, "Grandpa and Grandma are your family too."
"But the one who spends the most time with me is you."
She grabbed his sleeve but was suddenly shaken off forcefully.
Claire stepped back, startled, her eyes glistening with pain.
Tristan’s expression was cold, "Didn’t you tell me before that you no longer liked me? What do you mean by saying this now?"
He spoke while observing Claire’s expression.
She had softened in front of him for so long, yet he couldn’t simply assume she was wholeheartedly devoted to him.
This woman once went to great lengths to marry him.
Now, purposefully annoying him to make him leave her was not out of the question.
Hearing his words, Claire’s brows trembled.
But she quickly regained her composure, steadily looking at him, and said bitterly:
"So what do you want from me? You were the one who kept me by your side this time. While caring for me and being good to me, how could I possibly remain indifferent? I’ve restrained myself, not seeking you out for so long. Now seeing you with another woman, do you still want me to feel nothing?"
Her eyes brimmed with grievance, almost overflowing.
Tristan frowned, her demeanor didn’t seem faked.
Thinking so, he grew more restless.
He avoided her gaze, looking elsewhere.
Claire seized the moment and quietly said, "Actually, even if you reconcile with Miss Adler, if you’re willing to let me stay by your side, I won’t leave."
"Enough." Tristan interrupted her, coldly saying, "Leave, I won’t come to see you anymore."
Her pupils trembled, tears falling instantly.
"Did I say something wrong?" She clung to his clothes pleadingly, "Tristan, can you not send me away? Or tell me what I’ve done wrong, and I’ll change."
Tristan didn’t say anything more, impatiently prying her hand off his clothes and stepped away.
As he drove away from the hospital, looking in the rearview mirror, Claire was squatting there, holding her knees, still crying.
He pressed the accelerator and sped away.
Claire only slowly stood up after Tristan’s car completely disappeared from sight.
Her tear-stained face carried a faint, yet relieved smile.
Claire had an intuition that this time, she could truly sever ties with Tristan. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
However, fearing that Tristan might realize she was mocking him, she didn’t dare let her guard down. Usually, she would pretend to care about his situation through Jenson.
"Claire, why hang yourself on one tree? You’re still young. You can surely find someone who loves you and cherishes you."
"I just want to see him once more," Claire said, pleadingly, "But he refuses to reply to my messages or even see me, even just once. Jenson, is he next to you now?"
Jenson held the phone up, glancing at the indifferent Tristan beside him.
He covered the receiver and said to Tristan, "Do you want to tell her yourself or should I add fuel to the fire so she gives up completely?"
