Chapter 130: Chapter 130: I Am Lou Wenjian

Yi Roujing’s June schedule is out. Since she’s an outpatient nurse, most of her shifts are during the day, with regular working hours, but she has to cover four shifts a month. These four shifts are night shifts: two are from 4 PM to midnight, and the other two are from midnight to 8 AM the next day.

Her days off are mostly on weekends, but there are times she has to work, so that means she gets two days off on weekdays. Anyway, Yi Roujing feels happy about it, and no wonder Han Xiangxi said she was lucky to be assigned as an outpatient nurse.

On the 12th and 13th of June, Yi Roujing has to go to County First Middle School to take final exams. She had explained this to the hospital before joining, so Luo Yueyuan scheduled her for night shifts on those days especially.

When the June schedule was released, Yi Roujing noticeably sensed a change in the atmosphere of the nursing department, especially in how the nurses were treating her.

Han Xiangxi knew from the start, and still treats Yi Roujing the same; Feng Lishu, being a straightforward person, isn’t foolish either and guessed the reason, remarking on the reward for Yi Roujing’s bravery, and treats her no differently.

Jin Fengying and Feng Lishu live in the same dormitory, and they’re quite similar in temperament. They still eat together with Yi Roujing every day.

Except for these three, everyone else is just an acquaintance. Pan Meixin and Ye Xiangli, along with two others who had lunch with them on the first day, haven’t sat with Yi Roujing again. Pan Meixin even gossips about Yi Roujing behind her back.

Once, Yi Roujing overheard them, the implication being that Yi Roujing was being favored. How can a newcomer be an outpatient nurse right away, especially someone who hasn’t even gone to high school? They’ve done this for so long, and their monthly schedule is almost evenly split between day and night shifts, which is so unfair and the like.

When Yi Roujing heard this, Ye Xiangli blushed and lowered her head, while Pan Meixin remained unfazed and insisted that she hadn’t said anything wrong, asking why she couldn’t speak her mind, and so on.

In this matter, Yi Roujing didn’t argue with her colleagues—it wasn’t necessary. Actions speak louder than words; she was indeed at an advantage. However, this incident made her dislike Ye Xiangli.

Actually, it wasn’t the first time she overheard people talking about her. On the second day of work, before the schedule was out, she accidentally heard Ye Xiangli’s words through the window of the duty room.

"Meixin, the head nurse really takes care of Roujing. Such a good locker was reserved for her; the top is the least likely to get damp. It’s understandable; after all, Roujing did save the director’s son, so it’s no wonder she gets this treatment."

A locker was being associated with favoritism? Even if they assigned her the bottom one, she wouldn’t have said anything. Moreover, if this locker was truly that good, it wouldn’t have been left for her—it was just vacant.

Still, Yi Roujing doesn’t dwell on such things after hearing them. Whether it’s that she just doesn’t click with Ye Xiangli or what, after the schedule was out, she overheard Ye Xiangli gossiping about her again.

The gossip was subtle, saying Yi Roujing married well, mentioning her husband’s relative working as a gatekeeper at County First Middle School, and stating that their staff house is unique, not an apartment block, just the two of them with several rooms. It was said her reputation was not great before, but who would’ve imagined it to turn out like this...

Ye Xiangli’s comments were dripping with insinuation, reminding Yi Roujing of Wang Qiushuang—two-faced—though Ye Xiangli’s facade isn’t as opportunistic as Wang Qiushuang’s. Still, Ye Xiangli greets warmly and compliments her dressing nicely every time, but it feels insincere. After hearing this twice, Yi Roujing lost any good feelings towards Ye Xiangli.

On June 7th, Ding Weihuo and Li Hongying returned to the Dingping Production Team. It happened to be a Saturday, and Ding Anguo drove them back. He also planned to bring the bicycle to the county this time.

Yi Weiliang went home this weekend. Yi Roujing made a special trip to the department store to buy some stuff—malt extract, canned goods, a pack of brown sugar—and went to the food station to buy a piece of lard, for Yi Weiliang to take home.

Yi Roujing earns thirty-six yuan a month working at the staff hospital, with plenty of ration coupons, so Yi Weiliang didn’t stand on ceremony with her.

In a day, half the family was gone. Only Ding Ancheng, Yi Roujing, Ding Anmin, and Xia Xingchen were left. Yi Roujing locked up the house on Bright Alley and had Ding Anmin and Xia Xingchen stay with them.

"Big Brother, the house your unit assigned is really good," exclaimed Ding Anmin after looking around. She’d been to the food factory’s staff dormitory before, even if she didn’t live there—she’d visited her friends. Eight people to a room, small spaces, stuff piled everywhere—it didn’t feel like there was even space for feet.

With Li Hongying gone, the cooking fell to Ding Anmin. Yi Roujing and Ding Ancheng usually didn’t eat at home. Though they had all the cookware and bought some spices, when it came time to use them, they were missing the most crucial thing: oil.

"I’ll go buy soybean oil." Yi Roujing grabbed the coupons and money and headed out. Xia Xingchen quickly grabbed a bottle and caught up to her, giving Ding Anmin peace of mind.

However...

"Big Brother, I’m a bit worried about you," said Ding Anmin as she looked at Ding Ancheng, unmistakably conveying a sense of seniority. "Sister-in-law can’t cook. What will you do if you have to live alone in the future?"

"I can cook," Ding Ancheng replied concisely.

Ding Anmin was taken aback, very surprised. "Big Brother, you can cook?"

"Yes, simple dishes," responded Ding Ancheng. "I could learn more from someone given the chance."

Ding Anmin covered her mouth and exclaimed, "Big Brother, you’re so great. You should help me find someone almost as good as you."

Naturally, this led to an eyeroll from Ding Ancheng. Still, speaking of partners, Ding Ancheng became concerned as well, since Ding Anmin was at the age to start considering it, so he needed to keep an eye out for her.

Meanwhile, Yi Roujing and Xia Xingchen headed straight to the grain and oil store. It was past the time for buying groceries, so there weren’t many people in the store. But Yi Roujing immediately saw Hu Ailing, pushing a wheelchair and smiling brightly.

"Hu Ailing," Yi Roujing couldn’t help but call out the moment she entered.

Hu Ailing turned around, and when she saw it was Yi Roujing, her whole face lit up, "Roujing."

Even Xia Xingchen knew Hu Ailing, nodding slightly with a smile to greet her. Hu Ailing recognized him too, and smiled back.

Hu Ailing was about to walk over but stopped herself, remembering something. She lowered her head and said something to the person sitting in the wheelchair, then that person immediately stood up and bowed slightly towards Yi Roujing, startling Hu Ailing until her face turned pale.

The man straightened up and walked a few steps toward Yi Roujing. His right leg limped slightly but wasn’t immediately noticeable. "Hello, Comrade Yi Roujing, I’m Lou Wenjian."
