Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 93: Returning Home in Glory
When Li Hongying went out, Yi Roujing hadn’t gotten up yet, so she naturally didn’t know about the son and daughter-in-law’s plan to go to Xintang Production Team, but she could guess. Moreover, as she watched the two getting closer, their relationship developing in a positive direction, she was pleased.
"You two ride slowly, spend more time at your mother-in-law’s house. Since you have a holiday, you can stay for two days, don’t worry about things at home," Li Hongying said directly to Ding Ancheng and Yi Roujing.
"Mom, we’re off then," Ding Ancheng replied, speeding up his pedaling.
"Oh dear, Hongying, you didn’t just see all the good stuff hanging on that bike handlebar. How could you bear to part with them? I saw Ancheng’s wife carrying two bundles, definitely filled with cloth. How many cloth tickets do you get a year? And you’re giving them all to your in-laws at once. You really are generous and unconcerned," said Hupozi sarcastically.
"Once our son marries, they form their own small family, and I don’t interfere anymore. But look at you, your son is grown and living separately, yet you still meddle in his affairs and hold onto his salary. If you keep it up, even if Jianshe marries several wives, they’ll all be torn apart by you," Li Hongying calmly retorted, making Hupozi’s face flush with anger.
"How many days are we staying?" On the way to Xintang Production Team, Ding Ancheng asked softly.
"Let’s stay for one day," Yi Roujing considered and replied, then suddenly realized a problem, "We didn’t bring any change of clothes."
"It’s just an hour by bike, easy enough to come back for them," Ding Ancheng explained. "Since we got married, I haven’t stayed at my in-law’s. I wonder if they will welcome me."
"They should, I guess," Yi Roujing responded.
As Ding Ancheng cycled with Yi Roujing into the area of Xintang Production Team, they attracted attention, as having a bicycle was a big deal, let alone the good things loaded on it.
"Who said Roujing wasn’t liked by her in-laws after getting married? Who wouldn’t be if you bring so many gifts back to your family?"
"Wow, that bicycle is a Phoenix brand, but it looks smaller than the one the team leader has. Is it a women’s model?"
"A women’s model? Was it bought for Yi Roujing?"
...
The members of Xintang Production Team quickly spread stories of Yi Roujing’s grand return as if she were coming back gloriously.
When they got home, Yi Roujing’s mother, Liu Huilan, was at home with her three grandchildren.
"Mom," Yi Roujing called, while knocking on the door. Liu Huilan almost rushed to open it.
"Oh, Nannan’s back," Liu Huilan pulled Yi Roujing into the yard, looking her over carefully. "You seem more spirited."
"Mom," Ding Ancheng had no hard feelings about being thoroughly ignored by his mother-in-law. He brought in the bike, following them into the yard.
"Ancheng is here too," Liu Huilan said with a smile of surprise when she saw Ding Ancheng.
Ha, ignored completely, she didn’t even notice me before.
"Aunt, Uncle," greeted Yi Junya, the eight-year-old daughter of the elder brother, Yi Junbao, the five-year-old son of the second brother, Yi Junfeng, and another five-year-old, as they saw Yi Roujing and Ding Ancheng.
The three children’s eyes stayed on the green net bag hanging on the bicycle, filled with goodies.
Yi Roujing shared two milk candies with each of the children. Liu Huilan didn’t stop her, and after thanking them, they went away happily eating.
The Yi family’s conditions were originally on the upper side in the team, thanks to support from Liu Huilan’s family. However, after her parents passed away, they didn’t interact much with her family, so their living standards barely counted as middle-range. After all, with many sons to marry off, there was significant pressure.
When Yi Roujing got married, apart from clothing, a hot water bottle, a cabinet, and a quilt, Liu Huilan didn’t give much for a dowry, a source of lingering regret in her heart.
Nonetheless, it’s precisely because Liu Huilan’s family truly cherished their daughter; otherwise, the mentioned dowry was already quite generous for a rural girl of that era.
But compared to the items hanging on the bicycle, the dowry in Liu Huilan’s heart seemed insignificant. She was truly impressed by her son-in-law and daughter’s generosity.
"What is all this for?" Liu Huilan inquired, frowning at the things hanging on the bike.
"To honor you and dad," Yi Roujing replied as if it were natural.
"Oh," Liu Huilan pulled Yi Roujing aside to whisper, "What’s going on? Did you push your husband into buying all this to keep up appearances? Do you know how much money and tickets were spent? Your husband must’ve spent all he earned."
"Didn’t your mother-in-law say anything?" Liu Huilan’s heart sank a little. Although she had a good nature and wasn’t stingy, she wouldn’t have been happy if her daughter-in-law took so much back to her family, especially as they weren’t extraordinarily wealthy.
"Mother-in-law told us not to rush back, to stay for two days since it’s rare for us to come. But I thought one day should be enough," Yi Roujing relayed Li Hongying’s words.
Liu Huilan glanced at her daughter, "How are things between you and your husband? He lets you spend money so freely?"
"He gave me his savings before, and my mother-in-law gave me the money and tickets that Ding Ancheng used to give her, saying she only kept it for us to use after marriage," Yi Roujing explained truthfully.
"Your mother-in-law is truly generous," praised Liu Huilan. "You still shouldn’t spend money carelessly."
Though Liu Huilan adored her daughter, she knew that once married, she had to consider her in-laws. Bringing everything to her own family wasn’t ideal.
"It was a rare trip to the provincial capital, we had to bring something back. Not everything was bought by us; some were gifts from friends," Yi Roujing said.
"You went to the provincial capital?" Liu Huilan was surprised.
Yi Roujing nodded, "Don’t worry, mom. I’m a fair person; whatever we got for you and dad, we also got for my in-laws."
"It’s good you understand," Liu Huilan sighed with relief.
When Yi Roujing first saw Liu Huilan after coming over, it was when her family came to Dingping Production Team to defend her. Back then, Liu Huilan dressed very fashionably. But now, her hair was tied back, and she wore old clothes; as she looked at her family’s house, it was clear their conditions were limited.
"Why so much," Liu Huilan said, marveling at the abundance the provincial capital’s wealth could offer while sorting the items her daughter and son-in-law brought.
"Mom, I heard little sis is back," Yi Weiliang hurried over, his pant legs rolled to the knee, his calves covered in mud.
"It’s busy planting rice seedlings. Why are you back now? It’s not even lunchtime," Liu Huilan scolded with a glare at Yi Weiliang.
"Sis, brother-in-law, have a seat for a bit, we’ll be back soon," Yi Weiliang grinned and laughed before running off upon seeing Yi Roujing and Ding Ancheng.
"He’s really something, already twenty-one and still acts like a kid," Liu Huilan teased with a smile, then sighed, "He doesn’t have his mind set yet and isn’t seeing anyone. By the time his second brother was this age, Xiao Feng was already born."
