Chapter 37: Chapter 37:Enlightenment [1]
Picking up my sword, I assumed my stance before the tree, staring at myself in the reflection of my blood-red blade.
A droplet of sweat rolled down my face, and my amber-brown hair was all ruffled up, messily leaking onto my face.
Instead of simply swinging my arm as hard as possible, I slowly slashed the sword at the tree, keeping it perfectly horizontal throughout the whole motion.
Before increasing the speed and strength of my slashes, I needed to get the correct technique down.
As my sword collided with the tree, the blade embedded itself in the trunk’s bark instead of bouncing off.
Trying my best to keep my grip on the hilt, I yanked the sword out, seeing a small divot in the trunk.
Just like soccer players, who do dribbling and shooting drills to improve their technique, I created my own exercise.
In the first part of the drill, when I slowly swung my sword at the tree while keeping it at the same height, my technique for horizontal sword slashes improved.
And, during the second part of the drill, where I yanked my sword out of the tree, my grip strength improved.
As my technique enhanced, I gradually increased the speed and strength of my horizontal slashes, allowing the blade to embed itself further in the tree trunk.
Then, my grip strength increased further, as I now had to yank my sword further out of the tree while keeping my hand still on the hilt.
While stars and moon shined above me, I relentlessly rinsed and repeated the drill for an hour until my body began to ache.
My figure’s physical condition was in relatively good shape, so it seemed like the former owner of this body had been taking care of himself.
At least conditioning wouldn’t be a problem for now.
Collapsing on the ground and laying against the tree trunk, which was starting to tilt as a result of all my sword slashes, I was about to close my eyes when a sudden noise interrupted me.
*RUSTLE*
The night was deadly quiet, so when I heard the bushes down the hill rustle as if someone were moving through them, I was immediately on high alert.
Wiping the sweat off my forehead, I immediately stood up and raised my blood-red blade so that it was facing the sky.
In the darkness of the night, only my figure and not my actual appearance would be visible, so I was attempting to seem as tall and terrifying as possible.
*RUSTLE*
*RUSTLE*
Climbing up the tree and sitting on the lowest branch, I attempted to get a better look at the bushes without moving closer to them.
Within a few seconds, a shadowy figure with long hair emerged from the bushes and slowly walked up the hill where the tree and patch of grass were.
Assuming she hadn’t noticed my presence, I stayed atop the tree branch with my sword ready and looked downward.
Halting just before the patch of grass, the figure paused before confusedly glancing around.
Their gaze passed right by the tree and my figure before scanning the vast blue lake and green grass.
To get up here, one would have to scale the high metal walls of the marketplace, so this place was always empty.
Yet, someone had decided to visit here at night?
Feeling something off, I silently stood up on the branch with my sword by my side, observing the figure for now.
However, before I could even react or raise my sword, the figure suddenly turned around and looked straight at my figure on the tree.
They had pretended not to notice me. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
*WHOOSH*
Within seconds, a giant gust of wind, invisible to the eye, rushed against my face, knocking me off balance and threatening to throw me off the tree.
After a moment of debating whether or not to fight the wind, I suddenly let go of my body, allowing myself to fall back first off the tree.
*CLICK*
As I fell through the air, I pressed the button on my sword, instantly feeling it shrink and turn back into a pen.
With the small pen in my palm, I felt my back crash against the cold grass and hard dirt of the ground, instantly sending a surge of pain through my body.
Dazed, I caught my breath and slowly lifted myself with my hands until I was sitting down criss-crossed.
Finally, I looked up at the frozen figure and asked.
"Was that really necessary?"
Stepping forward onto the grass, the figure was illuminated by the stars above, her snow-white hair dazzling under their shine.
However, the figure did not reply or open her mouth.
Instead, a familiar voice sounded from behind me, instantly catching me off guard and causing me to fall forward.
"I thought you’d be drinking again."
Turning around, I spotted Liana’s familiar figure walking up the hill and toward me, her pitch-black hair blowing back from the wind.
Raising my hands, I hid my pen behind my back and responded.
"I was just enjoying the view."
Ignoring my sitting figure, Liana glanced around the area for a couple of moments before returning her gaze to me.
"You’re shivering and sweating. Doesn’t sound very enjoyable to me."
Liana was right; adding to the coldness of the night and the rough ground, my body was aching from the exercise, making it impossible for me to sleep.
Knowing she was going to offer me a room at the guild, I preemptively shook my head and responded.
"I’m fine out h-"
Cutting me off mid-sentence, Liana suddenly disappeared from my sight, blending in perfectly with the darkness of the night.
Then, a moment later, her figure appeared right in front of me, and before I could even notice her presence, she grabbed my cloak.
Dragging my sitting body behind her like a parent with their child, Liana simply snorted and said.
"Evangel, we can go back now."
Nodding her head, Evangel followed behind Liana and me as we rapidly went down the wall and walked through the now-empty marketplace.
Booths were shut down with metal sheets covering every opening, and there was not a single figure in sight within the previously packed streets.

Now, standing in front of the entrance to the adventurer’s guild with the two girls by my side, I asked in a sarcastic tone.
"Could let go of me now?"
