Chapter 38: Chapter 38:Enlightenment [2]
In reality, throughout our journey from the hill back to the adventurer’s guild, I had plenty of chances to escape from Liana’s grasp and leave.
However, the thought of a soft mattress with a warm blanket after a warm shower was too much to give up.
And, after this, it wasn’t like I would see them again.
The Glaive was located on a massive and isolated island, so the chances of me running into Liana or Evangel were extremely low.
They were giving me charity, so I might as well take it.
Opening the guild doors, revealing the empty first floor, Liana walked in before turning around.
Pointing to an empty table with a couple of chairs and cushions around it, she said.
"I’m assuming you don’t have enough for a room, so you can sleep down here."
Sleeping anywhere but outside with the coldness of the night and the rough ground was an improvement, so I nodded my head and graciously responded.
"Thanks."
Giving me one last side glance, as if silently saying, "Don’t do anything stupid down here," Liana walked up the stairs and entered the second floor, disappearing from my sight.
As I took a seat on one of the cushions, happy to rest my back on something comfortable, I glanced up and saw Evangel still on the first floor.
Hadn’t she just killed and hunted a troll?
How did she not have enough money for a room!?
Ignoring my gaze, Evangel walked up to the bar and sat down on an elevated stool, resting her head on the bar top.
Just as I closed my eyes and propped up my legs on another chair, a voice suddenly sounded from a couple of meters in front of me.
"You were swinging your sword incorrectly."
Immediately jumping out of my seat, almost knocking the empty table over, I stood up and stared at Evangel confusedly.
With her head resting on the bar top like a corpse, her snow-white hair leaking off the counter, she simply stared mindlessly at a wall.
How long had she been watching me practice with my sword?
Had Liana seen me as well?
Calming myself down, I simply shrugged my shoulders and responded.
"It’s rude to watch others practice without their permission."
Finally showing some sign of life, Evangel raised her hand, swiveled it 360 degrees like an owl, and gazed at me.
"Ok."
With that single word, Evangel plopped her head back on the bar top and turned away from me, hiding her face.
After a moment of dazedly standing still, I also sat back down and closed my eyes..yet my mind wandered.
What did she mean I was doing something wrong?
I had seen her fight with the troll, and as expected of the previous hero’s brother, she was extremely skilled with weapons, years ahead of me in every category.
She had been training by herself since she was a child...hoping to one day join her brother on the battlefield.
Unable to withstand my curiosity any longer, I glanced upward and emotionlessly asked.
"What did I do wrong?"
Before I could even close my mouth, her voice immediately sounded...as if she had been predicting and waiting for my answer.
"I thought you said not to watch you practice."
Letting some annoyance seep into my tone, I replied back.
"Well, you’ve already watched me, right? So, as an apology, tell me what you observed."
Still staring off into the distance, Evangel shrugged her shoulders and said.
"I’ve already erased the scene from my memory as an apology."
"..."
At a loss for words, I stayed silent momentarily before leaning back and exasperatedly sighing.
Was she always this stubborn!?
Breaking the silence in the room, Evangel suddenly said in a seemingly enthusiastic tone.
"Although...if you could acquire some of t-"
Not letting her finish the sentence, I immediately walked to the right side of the first floor before ascending the stairs up to the second.
Heading to the room I had been in last night, I paused before raising my hand and forming a fist.
In the state that I had left the room in earlier, no paying customer would be staying there tonight, so Liana was probably in here.
Lightly knocking on the door, I awkwardly waited for a couple of seconds, hearing some sounds echo from within the room.
Then, the door finally slid open, revealing Liana, who was dressed in a black top with pajama pants.
Scratching my head, I hesitated before asking.
"Could I get one more mochi?"
"..."
After a couple of moments of staring at me, Liana finally sighed and walked backward while saying.
"Just one. That girl, Evangel, devoured the rest."
Recalling the mirror I had broken earlier, I looked into the hallway until Liana reappeared beside the door.
Handing me the mochi, Liana placed her hand on the doorknob and said.
"Evangel’s room is a couple doors down...so be quiet on your way down, and don’t tell her I have more."
Without even waiting for my reaction, she shut the door, leaving me alone in the narrow hallway.
"Evangel’s room?"
Confused, I walked back down the stairs to the first floor with mochi in my hand, narrowing my eyes as Evangel’s figure came into sight.
Not even getting up, she simply gestured for me to come closer like a master summoning their servant.
Exhausted and wanting to go to sleep, I held out the tissue with the mochi on it and said.
"Be quick, alright?"
Seemingly ignoring my words, Evagenl grabbed the dessert and...stared at it in her hand like a miner examining a diamond.
"..."
"..."
If I didn’t do something, I was going to have to wait at least twenty minutes for her to finish the treat.
Reaching my hand, I attempted to grab the mochi with a tissue; however, her palm immediately moved downward, and all my hand caught was air.
Slowly, she shifted her gaze up to me, her mouth sealed close.
