Chapter 91: Chapter 91:Mentorship [5]

Ignoring the sudden increase, I commanded the remaining mana outside to surge downward and surround the area of the ground that intersected my diagonal Tempo line.

The line was completely clear, with no flickering, as Tempo considered me too close to the ground for my current abilities to change anything.

Now, mere yards away from the ground, I brought my knees to my face and performed a somersault in the air so that I was now diagonally diving head-first toward the ground.

Following the tempo line that now led from my head toward a small portion of the coliseum ground that was highlighted in light blue, I reached my arms out to the ground.

*BANG*

As my fists hit the ground, they first passed through a thin layer of mana that I had set up, slowing significantly.

The mana particles had not been imbued with any abilities; pure mana particles are inherently resistant to the human touch and apply a slowing effect when grabbed.

That’s why humans cannot simply run around trying to absorb mana particles they find and must obtain mana orbs from beasts to gain more mana capacity.

Once mana is sent out from a user, it cannot be reclaimed by anybody...unless your gift permits it.

Thus, when my fist crashed against the soft sand-like substance of the arena, only a small surge of pain appeared.

Falling forward with my fists embedded in the sand, I exhaustedly lay down on my stomach, the sun shining on my back.

Not even a moment, a voice I never wanted to hear again sounded.

"Looks like you’ve earned yourself lunch."

Sitting down next to my face, which was exhaustedly looking at the sand below, Daisy reached behind her back, revealing a small wooden picnic basket.

"I know you may hate me for that, but we saved a lot of time. With that fall of yours, I got an insight into your battle style, mobility level, current abilities, and intelligence."

"Usually, it takes most mentors over a week to fully understand their mentees, but we’ve just skipped that!"

...did she want me to thank her for dropping me above the coliseum and just watching me helplessly free-fall?

Raising my head, I could only stare at her bright expression before dropping back to the ground.

Sitting on the blanket that Daisy had put on the coliseum ground, I eagerly devoured the turkey sandwiches in front of me.

Simply observing me, she nodded her head every once in a while before examining her revolver.

The sandwich, a mix of crustless bread, strawberry jam, two slices of turkey, and cheese, slightly eased my anger toward Daisy.

At the very least, she had supplied me with food.

Looking up at her while drinking a bottle of water, I wondered what was next.

To train me accurately, Daisy had to know everything about me...including my element and gift.

Of course, I doubted that Glaive made it a requirement for students to tell their mentors private information, so if she asked, I could simply deny the question or lie.

If I did that, though, my training with Daisy would just be the general stuff that every enlightened person needs to know how to do.

On the other hand, the other students would be trained specifically by their instructors to accommodate their gift and element.

At that moment, a blurry figure suddenly flashed across my eyes.

What would she do?

Would she admit to her mentor that she possessed the Wind element or stay quiet?

Suddenly, snapping me out of my thoughts, Daisy spoke while throwing her hand forward.

"All right, what’s your element and gift?"

"..."

What!?

She was already asked!?

I wasn’t even done with my sandwich...

With a piece of the sandwich in my mouth, I froze in shock, almost falling back and choking.

After taking a moment to regain my composure, I slowly shifted my gaze up, making eye contact with Daisy’s dark purple pupils.

The decision was already upon me.

Sighing, I shook my head and opened my mouth.

The risks of revealing my rare element far outweighed the benefits of specific training in the long run.

As much as I wanted to increase my power level currently with specific gift and element-related training, gaining it at the cost of future deadly problems wasn’t worth it.

"PFFT"

Then, just as I was about to speak, Professor Daisy broke into an uncontrollable fit of laughter, falling down and rolling around on the carpet like a dog.

"AHAHAH...I-i c-can’t; t-the look on your f-face."

With a grim expression, I watched for a solid second as Daisy constantly rubbed her eyes and laughed while pointing at my face.

Really...? This was my mentor...

I could take her dropping me from the sky, but now this!?

Reaching her hand out, which was now highlighted in an ocean-blue hue, Daisy chuckled one last time and finally continued.

"The academy uses mana contracts to secure the secrecy of our students’ gifts and elements."

"No teacher can reveal a student’s private information to anyone, not even the emperor. The academy takes this seriously, thus the use of a mana contract."

Again, pausing for dramatic effect, Daisy smiled and said.

"Of course, failure to maintain a student’s secrecy means death."

Perhaps, seeing the distrustful expression still on my face, Daisy answered my internal question.

"The teacher automatically dies before revealing the secret."

Picking up a sandwich of her own, she gazed up at the sky and said.

"Anyway, why the secrecy? Don’t tell me you have a super rare element like a conceptual type or something."

Not falling for her tricks, I also stared up at the light-blue sky and replied.

"Oh, I wonder why you chose a random student like me as your first mentee. With the prince and princess as your options, I must have been quite the outstanding candidate."

I knew that Daisy had seen something during my fight in the capital city, and because of that, she might have selected me as her mentee.

Not to mention, during the entrance ceremony, she had seen my transformed blood-red and pitch-black covered right eye

With her legs trembling, full of excitement, Daisy extended her index finger, which was shining a light blue, and drew a rectangle.
