Chapter 66: Chapter 66: The Slightly Blind Third Brother

"I won’t run off... Mom, I definitely won’t. You can even put me on a leash."

Tang Xiaonan’s witty remark amused Phoebe Huxley, who tapped her on the head. She really didn’t know what to do with this little troublemaker.

Felix Thorne had originally planned to have his eldest son, Howard Thorne, go with them to the city. But they had two jobs to get to the next day, and his eldest was a good hand, so he had to send his second son, Patrick Thorne, instead. Of the three sons, the second was the most reliable; with him along, there would be no trouble.

Jim Thorne was incredibly envious. His second brother got to go to the city, while he had to go to the Hawthorne family’s home and stand guard over some weepy, ugly woman. It really sucked.

That’s right. In Jim Thorne’s eyes, the delicate, weepy Rosalind Green was an ugly hag—not even as pretty as his mother, Phoebe Huxley!

Before going to sleep that night, Tang Xiaonan made a point of finding Jim Thorne to give him another round of reminders, nagging him like a broken record.

"I know, I know! I’ve got it memorized. Stay at the Hawthorne place and don’t go anywhere, right? If you don’t bring me back a meat bun tomorrow, then hmph..." Jim Thorne impatiently cut off Tang Xiaonan’s nagging. ’She’s said it a dozen times already. I’m not an idiot, how could I forget?’

’He really couldn’t understand it. Were those hooligans blind or something? How could they all be into that ugly hag, flocking to the Hawthorne house like dogs drawn to a pile of crap? Their eyes must be smeared shut with it.’

"Thanks, Jim! I’ll definitely bring you back a big meat bun."

Tang Xiaonan stopped nagging. Though Jim Thorne was a bit of a rascal, he was reliable when it mattered, especially when it came to tasks his little sister gave him. He would be sure to keep it firmly in mind.

"What are you thanking me for? If anyone should be thanking me, it’s that Hawthorne guy." Jim Thorne was displeased again.

Tang Xiaonan’s lip twitched. ’Why on earth can’t Jim and Adrian Hawthorne get along?’

’He’s the future big shot!’

"Xiaonan, time for bed, or you won’t be able to get up in the morning," Patrick Thorne said. He and Jim Thorne shared a room.

Tang Xiaonan yawned, her eyes heavy with sleep. ’This body is just too young. It gets sleepy right on cue and completely ignores what my brain wants.’ She staggered groggily toward her room and nearly walked right into the doorframe. The next second, Patrick Thorne had her in his arms.

"Let Xiaonan sleep in here, don’t take her back," Jim Thorne said with a grin. It had been a long time since his little sister had slept in their room.

Patrick Thorne hesitated. He actually wanted her to stay, too. ’My sister smells so nice, like milk,’ he thought. ’But—’

"No! I’ll sleep by myself..."

The suggestion shocked Tang Xiaonan wide awake. She absolutely did not want to sleep in the same room as her brothers. ’I’m not a real little kid!’

Faced with her strong objections, the two brothers, though a little disappointed, still walked her back to her room. They even took the time to warm up her bed for her before leaving reluctantly. Lying in the toasty-warm bed, Tang Xiaonan couldn’t help but smile.

’Being spoiled by three older brothers like this... I’m practically bubbling over with happiness. I have to change my brothers’ fates so they can keep spoiling me forever.’

After a night of sweet dreams, Tang Xiaonan was jostled awake. She lifted her head, and a gust of mountain wind blew past, making her shiver and waking her up completely. She was on Goldie Thorne’s back.

"Xiaonan, you’re awake? Want an egg?" Patrick Thorne asked hurriedly.

"I don’t want one... Uncle, I can walk by myself."

Tang Xiaonan wanted to get down and walk on her own. ’I’m not exactly light. I don’t want Uncle Goldie to get worn out carrying me on this mountain path.’

"I’ll carry you. Your dad said I’m not allowed to let you touch the ground for the whole trip, or he’ll skin me alive," Goldie Thorne said dramatically. In truth, even if Felix Thorne hadn’t ordered him, he would never let his little niece get tired. It was only about six miles of mountain road; he felt he could carry her back and forth several times over.

Seeing that he was indeed carrying her with ease, not even flushed or out of breath, Tang Xiaonan relaxed and settled onto his back. The sky grew brighter, a brilliant red streak appearing in the east. The sun was about to come out.
