Chapter 22: Chapter 22: The City of Luxar

The carriage came to a halt before massive walls of thick, gray brick. The horses scraped their hooves against the ground as all kinds of people passed through the wide-open gate.

As he stepped down from the carriage, Mitsuki looked inside before entering, recalling the grim setting of Holylight and its ash statues.

’Seeing medieval places like this, after what happened to me at the beginning, makes my stomach hurt.’

And for good reason.

"I suppose that, even though we’re in the Kingdom of Lamus, this is just a city far from the capital, right?"

Jeanne nodded.

"Yes. This is the City of Luxar. It’s famous for being close to the land of Nemoria. It’s a place of major trade and merchant exchanges. The economy here is abundant, so you can earn a few silver or gold coins by selling useful items."

"In the past, Luxar was part of Nemoria’s territory and the Kingdom of Holylight, but four hundred years ago it was ceded in a trade of goods by King Londor IV. Nowadays, it’s what you see before you," Ellegaard added.

’The history of this world—its kingdoms, cities, and people—must be incredible. Knowing Dark Blood up to its third installment, there are many similarities I might find here.’

Mitsuki would be lying if he said he wasn’t interested in this world’s lore, but he had more important things to worry about.

Jeanne stepped forward and looked at him.

"For now, Aslan will take the carriage and horses to the stable. We need to sell the items we collected and then reserve rooms at the inn. Also, I’m sure Mitsuki needs a tour of the city or he’ll get lost if he’s left alone."

"That’s something I can’t deny," Mitsuki said, walking alongside Jeanne.

Ellegaard followed them, quieter than usual. Her expression was somewhat gloomy, as if she were sad. Unfortunately, no one noticed.

Upon entering the city, the first thing they encountered were narrow and strangely tall stone-brick houses. In the distance, decorating the skyline, there were spherical and cubic rooftops, towers rising like spears into the clear sky, stone bridges connecting buildings, and people of all kinds.

There were individuals with animal ears and tails, dark-skinned elves chatting among themselves, and one of those famous dwarves hammering a half-finished sword on a small anvil inside a modest shop just a few meters from the city’s entrance.

Flags and banners hung from walls and rooftops bearing a colorful symbol: a sword, a shield, and an arrow crossed together.

Mitsuki was left speechless by the sight. The fantasy he had only ever seen on a screen had become reality before his eyes, and it was...

’Amazing...’

His heart pounded in his chest. This was too exciting! This was the isekai adventure he had been waiting for over the past few weeks! Good karma was definitely paying him back for turning the Master of Cinder into pulp.

"Well then, let’s hurry," Jeanne said, taking the lead.

Mitsuki followed enthusiastically, with Ellegaard beside him. However, he noticed she was quieter than usual. There were no insults or cutting remarks from the elf, and everything felt strangely silent.

Just as the walk was beginning to feel awkward, Jeanne grabbed Ellegaard’s hand and said, "Do the honors, woman."

Ellegaard sighed. She moved to the front of the group and began guiding the tour.

"This is the city’s main street. It leads to all the important places any traveler might need, though some things are more hidden. I’ll explain better once we reach the city center."

’Well, that makes sense, but since I don’t know this place, I feel a bit overwhelmed. I mean, everything around me is completely new, even if I’ve experienced similar things in video games.’

Today was the day the hikikomori finally experienced a world beyond the confines of his room. And so, they continued through the bustling, crowded streets of Luxar. They turned corners while the voices of merchants promoting their goods rang out into the sky.

Some vendors offered maps, trinkets, and items from distant lands such as shells, valuable jewels, armor accessories, clothing, and even exotic food from the other side of the continent.

One of those merchants tried to sell Mitsuki a strange black tentacle skewered on a stick that looked disgusting. Fortunately, Ellegaard saved him and dragged him forward so he wouldn’t fall behind again.

After marveling at everything around him a hundred times over, Mitsuki finally reached the city center with the girls.

It was an immense open space—a plaza in the fullest sense of the word—with seven wide roads stretching toward the horizon in every direction. Surrounding it were large, five-story buildings with blue-tiled roofs occupying each corner. Most of them had signs with drawings and writing in a strange language that, oddly enough, Mitsuki could understand.

’A weapon shop, a restaurant, an antique store, a library... This place has a bit of everything. And I’m surprised I can understand it all. I guess it’s the system’s magic.’

"Listen, tick, right now we’re heading to the Luxar Guild, where you can get your money. However, to sell your items you need to be registered. Since you’re a vagrant, I assume you don’t have that, so we need to take care of it."

Tapping her staff lightly against the ground, Ellegaard pointed toward one of the large buildings.

"On the other hand, before guild matters, you should learn the most important places in Luxar," she said in a teacher-like tone. "Over there is the city library. You can enter with your guild registration and rent whatever books you want. Though it doesn’t have many interesting ones, really."

Jeanne stepped in front of Ellegaard and pointed at a smaller building.

"That’s the bar. If you want to get drunk and eat homemade food, it’s the best place."

Ellegaard smacked Jeanne with her staff.

"Ow!"

"Don’t interrupt me. You’re just trying to cause trouble again."

"And you get mad about everything."

’There they go again,’ Mitsuki thought. He shifted his attention away from the girls to observe the area more closely. ’This place is awesome. I’m interested in visiting the restaurant. I’ve been eating soup and dry bread every day. It’s about time I change up the menu.’

"Pay attention, tick. We need to go to the guild before we keep wasting time."

"Uh... Right. Let’s go."

Jeanne smiled at Mitsuki after Ellegaard’s words. She walked beside him, carrying that same aura of freedom and joy so characteristic of her.

"Where will you go afterward, Mitsuki? We were planning to stay a week before returning to our exploration of ancient castles."

"Oh, well... I don’t plan on staying long. If I can get a map of the kingdom, I might continue traveling on my own."

"Traveling alone is very sad. If you’re going to wander the world without a fixed destination, it would be better to keep traveling with us. We won’t reject you, that’s for sure."

Ellegaard’s ears, as she walked ahead of them, twitched slightly. Then, in that tsundere tone, she said, "Your training isn’t over yet, tick. Did you forget? If you go wandering off alone and get yourself killed, do you know how embarrassing it would be for me if people found out I was your teacher? You’re not leaving until you can proudly say that the great Ellegaard was the one who granted you her knowledge."

"She’s saying it’d be fine if you stayed a bit longer," Jeanne added.

"I see... I’ll think about it. If I can make my plans align with yours, then I’ll continue traveling with you."

’I guess I’ve been thinking too much about what old Aslan told me back then. I’ll need these people’s help if I want to survive.’

The words of a wise man should always be taken into account. Mitsuki understood that much and was finally able to continue his journey. Until then, perhaps he would live a wild adventure in this city alongside these girls.
