Transmigrated to a Dark Fantasy World of SSS-Rank: King of the Void-Chapter 23: Guild
The group circled one of the large buildings on the corner of the city center, entering a narrower street crowded with people of all kinds.
On one side there were shops with display windows showing armor, magic tools, clothing such as robes, cloaks, adventurer uniforms, and much more, but the interesting part was on the other side.
Attached to the large building—which turned out to be the most famous restaurant in the city—stood the previously mentioned guild: a three-story building with gray windows, dark stone brick walls, and a wooden roof.
Entering and leaving the place were people in armor. Others wore robes with pointed hats and carried staffs or wands. The ones who caught Mitsuki’s attention the most were the larger creatures passing through the massive double doors.
’Two orcs...’
Mitsuki had seen some of these creatures on the way to the guild. They were big—easily over two meters tall—muscular, with broad arms. Their skin was thick and green, almost shining with sweat under the daylight. They wore pants made from animal hides, primitive dark leather boots, and straps of the same material around their torsos and shoulders to carry their weapons—large axes and hammers. Their large lower tusks protruded from their mouths, terrifying to say the least.
Ellegaard noticed Mitsuki’s uncertainty at the sight of those creatures and gave him a light tap on the back with her staff.
"Uh?"
"This is the guild," she told him. "Since you’re a sad and pathetic being abandoned by the universe, it’s better if you get your own identity here."
’Insults are always free, huh?’
He turned his gaze back to the place, but noticed that Jeanne had already walked ahead. The princess strolled calmly beside the orcs as if they were puppies. In fact, the big guys looked uncomfortable when they saw her and stepped aside to get away from her.
’I can’t believe guys that big are afraid of a beautiful blonde girl. But then again...’
Jeanne had already shown enough to be considered a monster wearing the skin of a cute noble lady. Ellegaard, on the other hand, gave off the same impression to the people around her, which made Mitsuki reflect on the kind of people he had been hanging around lately.
’I think there’s something I’m not understanding...’
He had traveled with these girls for two weeks and had seen sides of them that could be considered terrifying from the perspective of weaker people, so perhaps he could understand the reactions of those nearby.
He followed behind Ellegaard, looking around the place. Inside the guild—which looked quite cozy with its handmade wooden tables and chairs—he noticed an area in a distant corner filled with sheets of paper pinned to a large board on the wall with various requests.
Meanwhile, at the central front desk, there was a cute young receptionist. She had black hair and brown eyes. Judging by her slender body and underdeveloped physique, she seemed to be a teenager wearing a white shirt and brown shorts.
Jeanne was speaking to her cheerfully, but the receptionist looked uncomfortable and nervous.
Ellegaard approached them, tapping the end of her staff against the floor.
"Oh! Ellegaard? You’re here too..."
For some reason, the girl looked even more nervous, but also disappointed by the elf’s presence. Jeanne placed a hand on her shoulder, making her tremble with discomfort.
"Maya is as cute as ever. I was just telling her about our new friend."
’So Jeanne already considers me her friend, huh...’
Mitsuki smiled faintly.
’I guess that’s not so bad.’
"Then let’s get straight to the point," Ellegaard said in a stern tone. She grabbed Mitsuki by the coat and forced him toward the counter.
"Hey—"
Ellegaard cut off his complaint.
"This tick wants to register with the guild. Take care of everything. We’re going to sell our mana fragments. Hurry up, Jeanne."
With that same arrogance, she shoved Jeanne toward the second floor via the stairs on the side of the building.
"Relax, Ellegaard. I can walk on my own."
"You won’t walk unless you’re forced."
Mitsuki blanked out.
’Hey, wait! Don’t leave me alone...’
He stretched out his hand, but froze when he noticed everyone in the guild staring at him.
’Once again I don’t understand a damn thing!’
"Uh... Excuse me, sir. Aren’t you going to register?" the receptionist said, gently tapping Mitsuki’s back twice with her finger.
He quickly turned around and looked her in the eyes, but his gaze soon fell to the floor.
’Yeah, great. Leave the virgin alone with a girl. What could possibly go wrong?!’
He shook his head, calming his inner screams, and replied,
"Yes... I will."
"Then please follow me."
The girl moved to the other side of the counter, where there were two chairs facing each other. She looked at him expectantly, wearing a slightly forced smile.
’Does it really have to be like this? I feel like I already spent all my nonexistent social skills on Jeanne and Ellegaard...’
Without another option, he reluctantly obeyed. He sat in front of the girl and kept his eyes fixed on the counter the entire time.
The girl took out a sheet of paper and placed it in front of Mitsuki along with a pen and a small bottle of ink.
"Um... Just in case, do you know how to write?"
’Write? I’ve never tried. I guess not, since I don’t know this world’s written language. Although earlier I was able to read a few things.’
He shook his head in response. The girl nodded and leaned over the counter beside the sheet of paper.
"Then I’ll help you."
’Please don’t get so close. After everything that happened at the lake with Jeanne, I don’t want to suffer at night when the "beast" wakes up...’
"The first thing is knowing where you come from."
Mitsuki swallowed, preparing himself for the most challenging conversation he had ever had with a cute girl.
"I don’t come from any particular place. I’m more like a wanderer."
"I see..."
The girl, like Mitsuki, was visibly nervous. Her chest—somewhat large compared to what her face suggested—brushed against the paper, which forced Mitsuki to quickly look away.
"Since you’re not from any specific place, you probably don’t have a record with any kingdom. That leaves us with your name, your role as an adventurer, your strongest point in combat, and some other personal information."
’I think we’re both too nervous to continue.’
From another perspective, both Mitsuki and Maya, the receptionist, looked extremely shy. Neither looked the other in the eyes, and their voices trembled.
That was enough to attract the attention of a group of young men. Among them was a loud blond wearing silver armor and carrying a short sword on his back. He said,
"Who’s that loser? Talks like a man but looks like a woman."
His companions burst into laughter—and surprisingly, so did many others in the room. At the mockery, Mitsuki’s expression instantly changed. Maya noticed it and became frightened by the gloomy look on the boy’s face.
"..."
"Didn’t he come with the Crazy Princess and the Road Witch?" said another man sitting nearby. He was bald and had tanned skin. "That’s definitely trouble."
"Maybe he’s just as stupid as those girls."
The laughter grew louder, making Mitsuki’s mind go blank. He lowered his gaze timidly and, with his breathing tightening, placed a hand over his stomach. A sudden wave of dizziness attacked him.
"It’s okay, sir. Don’t pay attention to them," Maya said. She placed her trembling hand on Mitsuki’s shoulder. "There are a lot of rude people here, but don’t take it to heart."
It took him a moment to respond. When he finally spoke, his voice trembled as if he were in pain.
"I... I don’t know... I think I’m leaving."
Staggering slightly, he slowly walked toward the door. The eyes staring at him only made him feel worse.
However, as he passed by the blond man, the man stuck out his foot and made him trip.
"Learn how to walk, miss. Can’t you see you might damage the floor?"
Mitsuki didn’t respond. He remained on the ground with his hands against the floor. He shut his eyes tightly, desperately trying to suppress all his emotions.
He felt the darkness within him filling his veins; gloomy thoughts crossed his mind, but—
Bam!
A punch echoed, followed by the sound of something collapsing onto the floor.
Mitsuki opened his eyes and looked toward the blond man, but what he saw instead was Jeanne cracking her knuckles while the man lay unconscious on the ground.
The entire guild fell silent.
"This idiot. Don’t you ever get tired of doing the same thing every time we meet?"
"This attention-starved dog will never learn. And neither will the idiots who laugh along with him," Ellegaard added after Jeanne, glaring at the blond man’s companions.
Mitsuki stared at them in astonishment, as if it were the first time he had ever seen them.
However, he already knew these crazy and dangerous girls.
’Girls... What the hell just happened to me? I...’
Bonk.
Ellegaard’s staff landed on his head.
"Get up, tick. You look pathetic. Do you want to ruin my reputation?"
"No, I—"
"Then get up or I’ll wipe the floor with your face."
"Don’t be so harsh on him, woman. Can’t you see he doesn’t feel well?" Jeanne said, crouching down and grabbing Mitsuki’s hand. "Come on, man. Don’t dirty your nice clothes."
He obeyed, and she helped him back to the counter.
"Did you finish your registration yet?"
"Not yet—"
"What do you mean not yet, tick?! Girl! Why aren’t you doing your job?!" Ellegaard complained, hitting Maya on the head with her staff.
The girl rubbed her head in pain while Mitsuki watched everything as if he weren’t even there.
’I... I might be pathetic, but...’ 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Hurry up, Mitsuki. After this we need to go find rooms at the inn."
"Don’t make me wait, rookie."
He looked at the girls. Timidly rejoining the group and setting aside his gloomy expression, he told Maya the remaining information. Still sore from the earlier hit, she wrote everything down on the sheet of paper.
’Maybe I’m just confused.’
But Mitsuki knew it wasn’t that simple.
