Trapped In Elysium: A Virtual Reality Nightmare-Chapter 43: Death Stare
The group moved quickly, the tension of the encounter with Lord Davos still hanging in the air like a thick fog. The merchant, looking both relieved and eager to leave, hastily collected his payment from the trembling Lord Davos, who now seemed far more docile than before. He shoved the coins into his pouch and made sure to count them twice, ensuring that he wasn’t being swindled after the confrontation. With a nervous glance at Liam, the merchant urged the group to move on, his voice almost shaking with anxiety.
"Let’s not waste any more time," he said hastily, looking over his shoulder as if expecting Lord Davos to suddenly spring into action. "He’ll retaliate, mark my words. We don’t need to be around here when that happens."
Liam, however, wasn’t paying attention to the merchant’s warning. His thoughts were elsewhere, his mind racing as he processed the events that had just unfolded. The praise from Marcus, Sophia, Jason, and Eleanor washed over him like distant echoes, faint and fading, their voices drowned out by the whirlwind of his internal thoughts. They were all speaking at once, their words laced with admiration for his actions, but none of it felt real to him right now. It wasn’t that he didn’t appreciate their support—it was just that something else had caught his attention.
A notification screen had appeared before him. His focus sharpened, cutting through the noise of his friends’ voices as his eyes locked onto the words displayed in front of him. He felt a strange sense of detachment as he read through the message, his heart rate quickening just a bit, though his outward appearance remained calm.

Liam stood there, momentarily frozen in place, as his mind processed the implications of this new skill. Death Stare. The words echoed in his thoughts, both chilling and intriguing. He had known that his abilities, his combat prowess, were becoming sharper since entering this strange world, but this... this was something else entirely. The power to induce fear, to freeze someone in place with nothing more than a look? It was a terrifying thought, and yet, part of him couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of satisfaction at having acquired such an ability.
He remembered the moment with Lord Davos, the way the rich man had reacted to his gaze. The fear that had overtaken him, the way he had been rendered utterly helpless in Liam’s presence. It wasn’t just the threat of physical violence that had made the man submit—it was something deeper, something psychological, something far more primal. The mere presence of Liam, combined with his cold, unwavering stare, had been enough to break him.
Is this what this skill does? Liam wondered, a flicker of unease passing through him. To think that something as simple as a gaze could carry so much weight. But then again, maybe that was the nature of power—its ability to overwhelm and control, even without a single blow being struck.
The others continued to praise him, but it was as if they were speaking from a distance now. Liam’s focus was entirely consumed by the notification on his system. The implications of the skill were slowly starting to sink in. He had always known that power came at a cost, but this... this felt different. Was he turning into something he didn’t recognize?
A small part of him recoiled at the thought, but it was quickly pushed aside as a new thought took its place. What if I need this? What if this power is something I’ll need to survive in this world? He shook his head slightly, trying to dismiss the dark thoughts that were creeping into his mind.
"Liam?" Sophia’s voice cut through his thoughts. He blinked and looked up, realizing that the group had stopped talking and was now looking at him with a mix of curiosity and concern.
Liam nodded, though he tried to mask the heaviness of his thoughts.
"You okay?" Marcus asked, his brow furrowed. "You’re kinda zoned out there."
Liam finally broke out of his silence, turning to face the others with a strange, unreadable expression on his face. His eyes drifted from one person to the next—Sophia, Eleanor, Jason, then Marcus—before he finally spoke in a low, almost uncertain voice.
"I think..." he began, pausing slightly, "I just unlocked a new skill."
That immediately grabbed their attention. Everyone leaned in slightly, alert and curious.
"What kind of skill?" Sophia asked, her voice soft but eager.
"Death Stare," Liam replied, the words leaving his mouth slowly, as though he was still trying to make sense of them himself. "That moment when I faced off with Lord Davos... I wasn’t just bluffing. Something happened. I could feel it—like some pressure exploded from me. I saw it in his eyes. He froze. He was terrified... like he wasn’t looking at me anymore, but something much worse."
The group stared at him for a moment, trying to process the weight of what he’d just said.
"Holy shit," Marcus said, his eyes wide with amazement. "That’s cool as fuck. You mean... like, just looking at him made him wanna crap himself?"
Liam gave a slow nod. "Yeah... something like that. The system popped up just after. Said I unlocked ’Death Stare’. Apparently it can paralyze someone with fear for a few seconds depending on their mental strength."
Jason whistled softly, clearly impressed. "That’ll be very useful," he said. "Especially when we run into stronger enemies—or people we want to scare off without a fight."
Sophia and Eleanor nodded in agreement, both of them clearly intrigued.
"That’s a really powerful ability, Liam," Eleanor said thoughtfully. "You might want to be careful how you use it. A skill that targets the mind like that could be dangerous in the wrong situation."
Marcus grinned and crossed his arms proudly. "Well, now I’m even more motivated to unlock mine. I bet when I finally get mine, it’ll be something like... Earth Shatterer, or Axe of the Gods!" He laughed to himself, clearly enjoying the thought.
Jason chuckled and nudged him with his elbow. "You wish. Knowing you, it’ll be something like Headbutt of Fury."
"Hey! That doesn’t sound too bad either!" Marcus replied, only half-joking. "Imagine knocking someone out with just your forehead. That’s badass!"
Liam smiled faintly, the weight on his shoulders lifting just a bit as his friends joked and laughed. The camaraderie was something he hadn’t expected to find here, but it felt real—and right.
"I wonder what triggers the unlock," Jason mused. "Liam’s happened in the middle of a confrontation... maybe ours will happen when we’re pushed too?"
"Possibly," Eleanor agreed. "Might be tied to emotional stress, danger, or something deeply personal."
"Guys!" the merchant’s voice interrupted them suddenly. He had been standing a few feet away, looking back over his shoulder nervously as he adjusted the reins of his cart. "We really need to get moving," he said, his voice tense. "I know you handled Davos, but people like him... they don’t just let things go. He’s going to retaliate. You humiliated him in front of his men. That kind of pride doesn’t forget easily." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
The group exchanged glances. The joy of the moment faded slightly as the reminder of their reality settled back in.
Liam gave a quick nod. "Alright. Let’s move."
Everyone climbed onto their horses and took their positions around the cart, the air shifting once more from light-hearted to focused. Whatever waited ahead, they would face it together.
