Chapter 35: Chapter 35 - Accident

Lucas flopped onto the couch, trying to rest his mind after the chaos of the day. However, the longer he lay there, the more irritated he felt.

"Why isn’t the system giving me a new task? Aren’t there supposed to be quests or something? Instead, it’s just messing with me like some annoying NPC!"

He turned over, staring blankly at the ceiling. After a while, Lena’s face crossed his mind—his stepsister who had just started at Brightville University in this city.

"Lena... I almost forgot about her. She stayed over here when she first moved in for college. I didn’t even bother asking what major she picked. I should’ve paid more attention to that."

Lucas grabbed his phone and scrolled to Lena’s contact. But before he could press the call button, his screen buzzed. Lena’s name appeared.

"Lena?" Lucas answered immediately, his voice tinged with concern.

"Lucas... Big bro, you’re at home, right?" Lena’s voice was soft, trembling slightly.

"Yeah, what’s wrong, Len? Why do you sound like that?"

"Dad... yesterday... Dad had a car accident back home. He’s still unconscious in the hospital."

Lucas froze, the air around him seeming to thicken. "An accident? Why are you only telling me this now?"

"I just found out this morning from Mom. I’m so confused, Bro. I... I can’t go home right now..."

Lucas frowned. "Why not? Lena, this is Dad! You have to go home!"

"I know, Bro! But tomorrow is my first day of campus activities. It’s my first day at Brightville University. I can’t just leave everything behind..."

Lena sounded frustrated, almost on the verge of tears. Lucas closed his eyes, taking a deep breath to calm himself before speaking.

"Lena, listen to me. Calm down, okay? Dad’s going to be fine. I’ll go back to Greenville as soon as possible. You focus on your campus stuff. I’ll keep you updated about Dad."

"But Bro... you’ll be alone..."

"It’s fine, Lena. What’s important is that you don’t stress too much about this. Dad will recover. I’ll handle everything there."

There was a brief silence before Lena spoke softly, "Okay... Bro Lucas, be careful on your way."

"I will, Lena. Don’t worry."

Lucas ended the call and placed his phone on the table. His fists clenched on his knees, his breathing heavy. His mind raced, trying to process everything he had just heard.

"Dad had an accident... still unconscious in the hospital. Lena can’t come home because tomorrow is her first day of university. I... need to go home as soon as possible."

The system’s voice suddenly echoed in his mind with a serious tone:

[Ding! New Quest Unlocked: ’Return to Greenville and Visit Your Father in the Hospital.’]

Quest Priority: High

Departure Time: First train tomorrow morning

Reward: Unknown

Lucas raised his head. "The first train tomorrow morning... that means I have time to prepare."

He stood up and quickly walked to his room. From his closet, he pulled out a backpack and began packing clothes, a charger, and other essentials.

"Alright, I need to make sure everything is ready tonight. I can’t afford to be late tomorrow morning."

In the middle of his packing, the system spoke again, this time in a slightly more relaxed tone:

[Host, this is the first time I’ve seen you so focused and serious. Very... interesting. But don’t forget to eat lunch first. Tomorrow’s journey will be exhausting. Would you like me to prepare something? Perhaps... a special travel snack from the system?]

Lucas snorted while shoving a pair of shoes into his backpack. "System, can you stop talking like a shopkeeper NPC? I’m trying to focus here."

[Alright, alright, Host. But remember, good preparation includes filling your stomach. Don’t end up fainting at the station tomorrow morning.]

Lucas just sighed, tossing a jacket onto his nearly full backpack. He glanced at the wall clock—it was only 11:15 AM. There was still plenty of time, but his heart felt restless.

"I can use the rest of today to calm myself and double-check the train schedule. No mistakes tomorrow."

After ensuring his bag was packed, Lucas sat back down on the couch. He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to steady his breathing.

A small system notification popped up:

[Reminder: The first train to Greenville will depart at 5:00 AM tomorrow. The host is advised to arrive at the station at least 30 minutes earlier.]

Lucas opened his eyes and nodded slightly. "Alright, I’ll be there on time."

With the rest of the afternoon still ahead, Lucas meticulously prepared everything. He double-checked his bag, ensured his train ticket was booked through his phone, and tried to calm his thoughts.

"There’s still time until tomorrow morning. I need to prepare everything as perfectly as possible."

After finishing his preparations, Lucas sat back on the couch, his body feeling slightly lighter. His backpack was ready by the door, his train ticket safely stored in his phone, and all preparations completed. However, his thoughts couldn’t stop drifting back to Greenville—the small town where he grew up.

"Greenville... a small town with a thousand stories. I didn’t have many friends there. But most of them... were girls."

Lucas let out a long sigh, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He hadn’t been particularly close to many people in that town, but a few memories still clung tightly to him.

"They’re probably all married by now, huh? In Greenville, girls usually get married shortly after graduating high school or early in college. I wonder... are they happy with their lives now?"

His mind wandered to faces he could barely remember—childhood friends, neighbors, and even a few girls he had been close to, though nothing had ever become serious.

But his daydream was interrupted when his phone screen lit up, and the sound of an incoming video call echoed through the room. The name on the screen made Lucas swallow hard.

Maya – Stepmother

Lucas hesitated for a moment before taking a deep breath and sliding the green icon. Maya’s face instantly appeared on the screen.

Maya looked as graceful as ever. Her long black hair fell neatly over her shoulders, her skin smooth and youthful despite being in her late 30s. Her gentle eyes looked at Lucas through the screen, and her warm smile made Lucas feel slightly awkward.

"God... she’s still as beautiful as I remember..."

"Lucas, sweetheart, are you okay? Lena told me you’re planning to come back to Greenville," Maya said softly, though her voice carried a clear note of worry.

Lucas opened his mouth to respond, but the words caught in his throat. At that moment, a system notification appeared at the corner of his vision.

[Passive Skill – Charm of the Forbidden activated. Target meets criteria.]
