Chapter 57: Chapter 57 - Denial

Lucas’s entire demeanor shifted, his smirk vanishing like a candle snuffed out by a gust of wind. His hands trembled slightly as he clicked on the thumbnail, the video expanding to fill the screen. There she was—Maya, looking younger and more vulnerable, her eyes filled with fear and defiance. The scene that played out made Lucas’s blood boil.

The room fell silent, save for the muffled sound of the video. Diana, still seated across from him, watched with a mix of horror and confusion. "Lucas... what is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Maya stepped closer, her face pale but resolute. "That," she said softly, her voice trembling, "is why I can never escape Victor."

Lucas’s grip on the phone tightened as his knuckles turned white. His sharp breath broke the oppressive silence. "He did this to you?" he asked, his voice low and laced with barely-contained rage.

Maya nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "He blackmailed me with it. Every time I tried to leave, every time I thought I could get away, he would remind me. Threaten me. Show me that my life could end with a single upload."

Diana’s eyes darted between them, panic blooming on her face. "Wait, wait, Lucas," she stammered. "You don’t know the whole story—"

Lucas’s glare snapped to Diana, cutting her off mid-sentence. His voice was icy, each word deliberate. "The whole story? I don’t need the ’whole story’ to know what kind of man Victor is. This—" he gestured at the phone, his eyes blazing, "—is more than enough."

Diana shrank back, her fear of Lucas eclipsed by the guilt etched into her face. She opened her mouth to speak but faltered, her words caught in her throat.

Maya move closer to Lucas, her voice steadying as she said, "You wanted to know why I stayed, Lucas. Why I couldn’t just walk away. Well, now you know. He didn’t just own my past—he owned my future. Every part of me."

Lucas exhaled slowly, his expression darkening. "Not anymore," he said, his voice a quiet promise. "Victor doesn’t own anything now."

Diana, her voice trembling but laced with bitterness, refused to back down despite the damning evidence. "You think you can just waltz in here and destroy everything with your fake ’evidence,’ Lucas? You’re pathetic. Victor is a good man—a better man than you’ll ever be! You’ve always been jealous of him, haven’t you? That’s what this is really about."

Lucas’s smirk didn’t falter, but his eyes darkened, the weight of his control filling the room like a storm cloud. "Jealous of Victor?" he repeated, his tone icy. "Diana, Victor’s entire existence is a lesson in mediocrity. The only thing I envy about him is how blind people like you are to the truth. You make his life easy with your loyalty—blind, stupid loyalty."

Diana’s hands balled into fists as her face turned red with anger. "Don’t you dare talk to me like that, Lucas! I see through you. You use these... these tricks to manipulate people. You’re nothing but a parasite, feeding on fear and power!"

Maya, who had been silent until now, took a step forward, her gaze steady and sharp. "Diana," she said, her voice calm but firm, "this isn’t about Lucas or his methods. This is about Victor and the kind of man he really is."

Diana snapped her head toward Maya, her expression venomous. "Oh, of course you’d defend him, wouldn’t you? You’re the one who started all this, aren’t you? Tempting him, throwing yourself at him—women like you ruin men like Victor! You couldn’t keep your hands to yourself, and now you’re crying victim!"

Maya’s eyes narrowed, but her voice remained even. "You don’t know what you’re talking about."

"I know enough," Diana spat. "Victor is a kind, decent man. He’s helped me when I was at my lowest! He’s supported so many of us! And here you are, trying to tear him down because you didn’t get what you wanted from him."

Maya’s composure cracked for a moment, her hands trembling as she clenched them into fists. Her voice dropped, low and steady, as she said, "Victor didn’t help me, Diana. He controlled me. He blackmailed me. Every time I thought I could escape, he reminded me that he had the power to destroy me with a single click."

Diana faltered for a moment, the conviction in Maya’s voice making her hesitate. But she quickly regained her footing, shaking her head. "No. You’re lying. You’re trying to make him the villain to cover up your own mistakes."

Lucas, who had been watching the exchange with a growing sense of irritation, finally stepped in. "Diana," he said sharply, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife, "you can keep deluding yourself, or you can face the facts. But either way, Victor’s secrets are out."

Diana glared at him, her eyes brimming with tears of frustration. "You’re the one making the secrets, Lucas! You think you’re so clever, but you’re just a coward hiding behind lies and illusions."

Lucas’s smile turned cold. He raised Victor’s phone, tapping the screen a few times before turning it toward Diana. The gallery of explicit videos and images filled the display, each one more damning than the last. "Do these look like illusions to you?" he asked, his voice calm but dripping with menace. "Because if you want, I can show you the rest."

Diana’s face turned ashen as she stared at the screen, her defiance faltering. She shook her head, muttering, "No... this can’t be real. It can’t be."

Lucas stared at Diana with a cold gaze. "I have an idea, Diana," he said, his voice low but loaded with meaning. "How about we make a video that Victor will find... very entertaining to watch?"

Maya, standing nearby, smiled slyly. "Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to capture it from the best angles."

Diana frowned, a mix of confusion and disgust crossing her face. "Maya, you’re his step mother. That’s immoral. How can you even look at your son like that?"

Maya simply chuckled, her laughter light and dismissive, as if Diana’s words were nothing more than a joke.

"Do-don’t tell me you two was having se...?"

"Yes," Lucas said with a smirk.
