Under the vampire Lord's protection-Chapter 120: Priorities
Chapter 120: Priorities
Silas had ambled the hallways per his usual, hoping it’d render the fog in his mind a tad more limpid.
It wasn’t until the sun cast its first hues on the eastern sky that he decided doing some carving would help him better with that.
On the way to his room however, a familiar figure came into view. A person he’d completely neglected to speak and smooth things over with, since their last meeting had gone south very quickly.
Edna froze at first, but then her widened eyes cooperated with the rest of her features to display a scowl.
"Morning, Master," she curtsied then resumed her walking.
"To you as well," he answered, looking ahead.
Right as the maid had been about to pass him, Silas added, "It is a bit too early for you to be up,"
Halting again and without glancing back at him, Edna retorted, "I was awoken by a howl about an hour ago and couldn’t sleep after that,"
"I wanted to address the last time we’ve spoken to each other,"
Silas had barely had the time to finish his sentence when a response came from her, "There is nothing to address. You hadn’t fed in two weeks. It was bound to happen. I am glad you did it to me and not someone else instead. They wouldn’t have been as understanding as I was,"
She sure was the type to toot her own horn. Humble was not part of her frequent vocabulary and somehow, Silas was not all that convinced that Edna had found the power in her to forgive him so easily.
"Have you been alright?" he asked.
"Very. Thank you for your concern," her words said one thing, yet her heart told an entirely different story.
Just from the way it drummed her chest, there was no other light under which to interpret it, her anger was palpable.
"I should have checked on you sooner," his eyes drifted her way.
"No worries there, Master. I know I am no longer a priority to you. That is of course, if I ever was one to begin with," she made a pause, but before Silas was able to place a word, she continued, "Now if you allow me, I’d like to start with my chores as early as possible,"
"You may go,"
Silas had nothing else to say as he was well aware of the sort of priority she meant. Edna was right to assume so since he’d never thought of her the way Arabella captivated his attention.
There was no competition between them there, much like there was no use in denying his genuine interest in the young woman. It was something worth its own deal of pondering time.
Silas might very well have sworn up and down it was hunger or the mere taste of her blood that made him act out of sorts, but it would’ve been the greatest lie ever told.
Edna never accomplished the chore she claimed to head towards. The maid made a full circle around the hallways then returned from whence she came.
Avoiding the head maid who’d just woken up at the time, she snuck back into the maids’ quarters and sat upon the edge of her bed.
Quill already inked, Edna held the piece of parchment that Lauden had left in her care, ready to write something down.
However, a message came through right as the tip of her feather touched the aged paper.
"Edna, you are being summoned to the Dragomir property this evening. Find a way to evade suspicion and make sure you are not followed on your way here,"
She spared it no further thought and instead scribbled a question down, "What am I being summoned for?"
"We have a very special guest here and we’d like you to meet him," their next message came, quickly followed by, "It is time for our next move which you happen to play a crucial role in,"
Edna did not know for sure, but she had an inkling as to who that special guest might have been.
Going out was not an issue. Daytime staff were free to roam any place they had the right to after completing their chores.
Her main predicament was breaking away from the rest in order to reach the Dragomir property.
After her stunt with the hypnosis spell, there were more eyes on her than ever. Even though the Master hadn’t ordered it, word of his interrogation traveled fast, and things for her had been on the edge ever since then.
A young maid peeked her head through the door before coming inside once she’d spotted Edna, "Ah! There you are! The head maid has been looking for you,"
It was Estrid; a long, silky haired human maid, hailing from the eastern side of Lustris that came searching for her.
Edna groaned at first, "I just got done straightening my uniform. I’ll be there when I can,"
The glower she sent the other maid did not faze her in the slightest. On the contrary, she maintained her position, "You know there aren’t two of you, right? Keep slacking off like that and you might just end up out of a job,"
There was not a hint of a joke on her demeanor and before Edna could fire back, Estrid turned away from Edna and left the brewing storm behind.
"How dare she speak to me like this!" she grunted, "I swear I’ll make every last one of these duds pay for the way they treated me,"
Although, Estrid’s words stuck with Edna longer for yet another reason.
"You know there aren’t two of you, right?"
That question resonated in her head, feeding the germinating ideas to their fullest size.
True it was, there weren’t two Edna’s, but why shouldn’t there be?
A second Edna would keep all of the attention on herself while she, the real one, could go visit the Dragomir’s.
It was the perfect plan overall. All that was left to do was contact her witch friend and it’d be done.
