Under the vampire Lord's protection-Chapter 122: Devilry
Chapter 122: Devilry
The next moon rose quickly. At least it felt like it did to Silas. He worked his best to tune out Arabella’s voice whenever he’d caught it around the manor.
Ada’s words about him were stuck ringing over and over in his mind.
"He’s sweet on you," she’d said.
"They tend to get obsessive" she’d added.
The last thing the vampire wished to happen was for the people he was supposed to protect to feel suffocated by him.
A swipe of chatter reached his ears. Little chirps, soft mutters and giggles reverberated before their sources came from behind the corner ahead.
When the group of young women finally came into view, the first ones in line froze, immediately mimicked by the rest of them.
Their voices died down as they promptly curtsied and scurried off, pair after pair past his figure.
The daytime maids had shed their aprons and donned the Eleazar family crest on their robes.
One of them easily stood out of the lot, not only through her familiar appearance but also her scent.
Edna trailed at the very back of the group, unsurprisingly locking arms with nobody. What truly tickled his curiosity was the manner in which she glared down while walking instead of her usual attempts at getting his attention.
Had he broken her? The blond had vocalized her complaints loudly and proudly right to his face.
So, what seemed to be the issue?
The questions ate at his insides. Part of it was guilt but the other part was... Pure suspicion.
She’d never wasted the opportunity to grab the spotlights. The fact that Edna would go through the trouble to make herself small or follow others at the back of the line announced nothing of the good kind.
In the hopes of lifting the veil off her behavior, Silas summoned Allegra. A face Edna was not as familiar with as the rest of the night staff around the manor.
"Do you see that blond at the end of the line?"
In front of one of the windows in the lounge room the two of them stood, watching as the maids climbed into a medium sized carriage.
"Yes, master," said Allegra.
"I’d like you to track her and keep an eye on her every move tonight,"
"It’ll be done," she bowed.
Allegra had caught up to the carriage with great ease. Even stopping at times for it to move forward.
The maids were dropped off at the entrance of KasselMoon, right by the stone bridge.
"Do you all have your Yuniper concoctions?"
From behind the trees in the distance, the vampire had caught that question.
"Yes!"
One after the other, the maids all chirped the answer until the last. One of them being Edna.
And into the town they went. The blond still followed at the back as the group threaded through the narrow streets.
When they finally reached the hub, Allegra was forced to move closer in order not to lose Edna in the mix.
The entire time, she never uttered a word and merely gawked at the people as well as the spectacles unfolding at the heart of the performance center.
It wasn’t long before they exited the square and went down one of the alleys that were lined with shops of all varieties.
"I need a potion for my skin. It’s been acting out lately," one of them said.
"Why didn’t you get one from the hub?" another retorted.
"I prefer to shop in peace and quiet," the first one added.
"As for me, I’d like to get some socks," Edna had spoken up, "Let us all split here then meet up again once we’re done with our errands?" she suggested with a smile on.
The rest of the maids looked at her with furrowed eyebrows for a moment, clutching at each other and their bags as though in disbelief over something.
When none of them gave a response, she huffed and stomped away, mumbling about how useless some people were.
Edna made her way past an ensemble of sparkling fairies whose heads turned along, following the young woman as she went.
A couple of ghouls also had their eyes on her the moment she’d appeared in their peripheral vision.
But overall, nothing worth remembering happened there as that alley was mostly deserted. The moon continued to shine its light upon the beautifully decorated buildings and gargoyles until Edna reached her destination.
A small boutique specializing in yarn and knitted products. The little bell above the door rang as soon as she’d pushed it open before sliding inside.
Allegra chose to remain outside as it would’ve been too blatant to stalk her from closer than that. Instead, the vampire kept an eye on her through the glass vitrine.
Edna disappeared behind a large and wide shelf.
"How much is this pair?" her voice reached Allegra.
"Only 5 bronze coins, dear," an older sounding woman responded.
"Alright then. I’ll take them!"
Less than a minute later, she re-emerged from the other side and headed out, a small bag in hand.
Hiding in the darkened crack between two houses, Allegra watched as Edna took the same path she did in order to get there.
On the way, the ghouls were gone but the group of fairies still floated and chattered in the same spot.
Although, the odd looks they’d thrown at Edna that time around left Allegra a little perplexed. Some of the little creatures had tilted their heads to the side and furrowed their eyebrows when others exchanged mutters among themselves while never letting her out of sight.
Since Edna had picked up speed, carving a considerable amount of distance, Allegra decided not to pay any more attention to the fairies and stick with Edna instead.
Everything seemed ordinary as the young woman went about in awe admiring the potion making display from the witches back in the hub.
but little did Allegra know that at that same, precise time, a hooded figure covering another blond woman, exiting the yarn shop after making sure the coast was completely clear and sprinted in the opposite way.
