Chapter 125: A small sacrifice

"Why? What is it you need her for?" arms crossed, Edna seemed particularly ticked.

"I am afraid that is way above your paygrade, my darling," Reubon did not miss the opportunity to taunt her.

In reply, Edna stared the man from head to toe then exhaled loudly, "Dear God! Why is it always the dullest tools in the shed that are the luckiest?" she shook her head slowly.

"Beg your pardon?" Reubon’s hands tightly clenched around the arms of his chair.

"Yo heard me," she pressed, "There is no pay at stake here, in case you’ve missed it, and we are sitting around the same table so please, get off your high horse for a moment, you might see or even say something worthwhile," the maid snarled.

"That is enough!" Lord Dragomir cut their little quarrel short, "We do not have all night,"

Unlike Reubon’s, Edna was more responsive to Dragomir’s voice. She immediately simmered down and straightened her stance, but not without throwing extra scowls at Reubon for good measure.

"Just tell me then, what is it you need me to do?"

Lauden, who had been completely eclipsed from Edna’s mind, returned in the room with a golden platter in hands Upon which rested a small, sealed flask.

In it swirled a red, runny liquid. When the vampire had first laid it on the table in front of her eyes, Edna thought it was blood, but since it lacked the degree of viscosity that blood would naturally sit at, the maid concluded it was some sort of potion instead.

Although, she kept her mouth shut on the matter and waited for further explanations.

And explain they did. The moment Lauden claimed his standing position by his Lord’s side, Dragomir put an end to the silence that had settled in, "This is for you," he leaned forward, picked the flask and gently whirled it around between his fingers, "This is to be our failsafe,"

"Meaning?" she raised an eyebrow.

"Our first attempt at recovering her unharmed will be in five days from now," it was Lauden that spoke, "It’ll be during an outing on Ostara the first with a few other Lords and Ladies, including either Persephone or Silas,"

"Judging by the way she’d been delegating more responsibility onto her son, it is then safe to assume that Silas will be the one attending," Dragomir chimed in.

"That still doesn’t explain anything to me,"

"My my...! How impatient!" Reubon scoffed.

Only that time around, she paid him no attention and remained focused on the red potion, "Where do I come in all of this?"

"Well, after your failed attempt at exiling her from the property, I received word that not only Morgana was summoned in the flesh, but that Arabella has been under constant surveillance and will surely not be allowed out of the manor without a valid reason," Dragomir paused, placing the flask back on the tray, "This outing is one of the only chances we’ll have at retrieving her safe and soundly, but we’re still unsure on whether Silas will bring her along,"

"Should he decide not to invite her on this trip, you will take matters into your own hands," Lauden maintained eye contact with her.

"If you expect me to use this potion on her, think again. I am not even allowed near her and that witch Morgana made sure she’s well protected against any magic," Edna shook her head while speaking.

A side smirk overcame Dragomir’s features, "And that is why you won’t be using it on her, but on the closest person to her. Someone that spends the most time with Arabella,"

"That’ll be the daytime maid, Ada," freēwēbnovel.com

"Negative," Lauden stated sharply, "This potion is not meant for human use. Vampire only,"

"It is fairly strong. Only the oldest and strongest kind of vampires can withstand it without too many repercussions," sensing her reluctance, Lord Dragomir decided to elaborate further.

Indeed, her eyes narrowed further the more they spoke.

"Ideally, this will be used on Silas himself, since we know he spends a lot of time with her," Reubon had finally said something that wasn’t meant to be denigrating towards her.

"Never!" Edna shot up at once, "When you said our interests aligned, I believed you knew the meaning of that statement, but clearly I was mistaken," she turned her attention towards Dragomir, "I want her gone so that I can reclaim my rightful place by Silas. Do what you will with her, but he is strictly off limits!"

In front of her shaken, rage filled figure, Dragomir exchanged a short glance with Lauden before declaring, "Bummer,"

"It will not hurt him. It will only disorient him enough to be complacent for a whil-" Reubon tried again but quickly got shut down.

"I said no!"

"I thought you wanted her gone," Lauden suggested, "This would be a small and harmless sacrifice that’ll cost you nothing ultimately,"

"I give you my word that no harm will come to him," Dragomir reached out and took Edna’s hand in his, "Silas is very strong," he gently rubbed his thumb back and forth against her skin, "This concoction was put together with him in mind. Think very well, my dear. Your future might just hang upon your decision today," he worked on softening his tone, earning him a comforting air.

Edna plopped back down, eyes fixating the flask, "Even so, he only feeds upon her. If I can’t get this in her blood, then what’s the point?"

"Well, this man does take baths, does he not?" wide eyed, Dragomir leaned back to feign surprise, "This potion does not need to be ingested. Direct physical contact, even diluted should suffice,"

Very hesitantly, Edna still extended her hand and picked the flask up, "Should anything happen to him, I’ll see to it that all of you pay the price dearly,"

"Fret not, my dear," the Lord reached out once more, and patted the back of her hand, "Repeat use is highly advised. It’ll yield the desired effect quicker,"
