Chapter 139: No luck

"Were you able to see anything?"

Arabella had asked the moment Ada’s behind settled on the chair facing her.

"No, you were completely right. We are way too far for me to spot the slightest thing from here," the maid’s eyes fell on the open book in front of her, "It’s during times like these that I wish I had advanced senses," she sighed, plopping her cheek onto her palm.

"Always be careful what you wish for," Arabella chuckled, "Many of those can come true,"

"Well, in that case," Ada perked up and straightened her stance where she sat, "I wish I owned my own castle with my own servants where I can eat whatever to my heart’s desire," a steady hand up, the maid had declared with much confidence.

After the fit of giggles that had overcome the both of them following Ada’s highly animated announcement, Arabella took a new breath and with a smile spoke up again, "Is that truly your dearest wish?"

In response, Ada’s shoulders slumped a tad, her expression somewhat dimming, "No," she said calmly.

The words seemed to not come easy as her gaze lingered on the title "Motherland", going back and forth between the big letters and the first lyrics of the song.

"I suppose that...," Arabella trailed off momentarily, looking very sheepish, "If I asked you to sing this song for me, you wouldn’t be comfortable doing it right now," she half asked.

"Oh... I... I don’t...," freewebnσvel.cѳm

Just as the young woman had expected, Ada fumbled for explanations and justifications instead of right out declining, eyes threatening to leap out of their sockets.

"It’s alright, Ada," Arabella placed a hand on the maid’s, "I understand. So, whenever you’re ready or feel like it, I’ll be here for it, always all ears for you," she smiled warmly.

"Thank you, Miss," Ada flung her eyes down at first, but as they caught the title once more, her demeanor shifted. She straightened up one more time before asking, "Miss,... Do you think... I mean, would I be in trouble if I borrowed this book to read at night?"

"I don’t believe I stand in the position of granting permissions, but to be frank with you, I don’t think the Lady would mind at all," Arabella’s eyes drifted to the side, earning her a pensive outlook, "I’ve seen Edgar remove books from the library to read on his own time. So, I don’t think your case would be any different,"

"Then Perhaps I shouldn’t," she shook her head.

"If you don’t, then I’ll carry it out for you," Arabella’s puffed cheeks banded with her knitted eyebrows to plaster the most ridiculous of looks.

Yet another tide of laughter filled their surroundings until Ada put an end to it, "Do you think it’s safe for us to leave the library now?"

"I am not sure, but by now, the Master and his guests should already be in the meeting room," Arabella looked towards a window as if it held the answer to their dilemma.

Without a single warning, Ada shot up and proclaimed, "I think we’ve waited enough!" she waited for Arabella’s reaction, but when none came, the maid continued, only a lot less confident than before, "It’s past dinner time and my stomach is starting to make demands," she clutched it with a hand.

"Alright then, should we try our luck?" Arabella too stood up.

"I believe we should!" Ada gave one determined nod in reply.

As promised, when Ada failed to take the "Golden lines" book with her, Arabella shouldered the task and hugged it close to her chest while exiting the library.

The hallways were overall quiet. A tad quieter than their usual, but Arabella chalked it up to the unique condition of having an Alpha werewolf within a vampire’s property.

History never shied away from stating the long-standing rivalry between wolf folk and vampires. Both nearly as strong and fast as each other, sharing the same weaknesses of one another.

A contention between beasts they still managed to put on hold for over a century all in order to battle a common enemy... Her people.

"Hopefully the cooks got everything ready," Ada broke the sort of, comfortable silence between them, "That way I simply have to bring up the trolley,"

At those words, a quiz popped in the young woman’s mind, "I always meant to ask, but never found the opportunity, how do you manage to climb the stairs with the burden of the trolley with you?"

"Oh! Very easily, Miss," Ada chirped, "There’s a levitating platform near the kitchens. It’s been enchanted to ascend and descend the floors on commend," she smiled.

"How ingenious!"

Arabella clasped her hands together, eyes shining with a thousand little stars. However, right as she’d been about to share how they used to send food across different floors back in her home in Lustris, a deep and guttural voice came right around the corner.

"Ingenious indeed!"

A familiar figure stood right by the tall stranger who merely wore a thicker coat of fur around his bits.

Hair brown as a nut, long, silky smooth and yet ruffled. The glowing of his eyes was reminiscent of the moon itself.

"Humans...," a degree of disdain was palpable in his tone, but the look on his face suggested otherwise, "No wonder you’d find such a primitive trick ingenious,"

Despite the presence of Silas with them, the two women still did their best not to let fear show on their faces. Not that they’d succeeded, but it would’ve been rude not to try at least.

Cynric, all of the sudden, bent forward, bringing his face so close to Arabella it’d wrenched a flinch out of her.

"You’re quite the pretty little thing, you know that?" he’d softened his voice the best he could, landing him in a husky range.

Silas immediately cleared his throat, stepping nearer to their figures.

"What? It’s not always I get to see such beautifully unique eyes. So unique, I only remember seeing them on a small handful of people once upon a time,"
