Under the vampire Lord's protection-Chapter 169: The cure?
Chapter 169: The cure?
Silas had tried to give her space and busy his mind by burying his head in other affairs, but every time his eyes laid on a something that wasn’t Arabella, the image of her cradled in Cynric’s arms would come knocking at the figurative door behind which his consciousness was contained.
Nothing but the sound of her voice could quell his worries. Although, at that late hour, Arabella didn’t speak much if not at all.
Only the gentle rustling of water came from her room as she continued to sit in the bathtub with no sign of leaving it in sight.
The footsteps that moved around her belonged to Katherine. From time to time, the vampiress would very sweetly attempt to coax her out of it, but to no avail.
"Arabella, dear," her soft voice reached Silas, "You’ve been sitting in the water for more than two hours already. Perhaps it is high time you leave it behind. You need rest after...," Katherine trailed off, seemingly unsure on whether to utter the end of her sentence or otherwise.
"Just a little longer, Katherine, please," so brittle, so tame Arabella’s tone was.
Katherine said nothing after that and merely sighed before the tiniest of thuds reached him. null doubt Katherine sitting back down.
Arabella’s heartbeats were just as tame as her voice. Very regular and on the slower side. It was as though the young woman had already fallen into the deepest of comas and yet not.
Perhaps it was her sanity that was at stake, hanging only by a thin thread... Her tone sure seconded that theory.
At that moment, something else disrupted that monotone train that carried on not so merrily on the same tracks.
The sound of yet another heartbeat approaching that hallway. That one much wilder than Arabella’s or Katherines’.
However, and right as the person had been about to come around the corner, their feet halted in place, keeping their figure concealed from his eyes.
Not that it mattered in the slightest as their scent gave them away almost immediately.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t Edna stalking his every move but Ada instead.
"Come out of there," his own feet had led right near the curvature of the wall separating them.
A small gasp escaped her as her breathing grew more strained.
"You are not in trouble. Do show yourself," there still was no warmth in his tone, but he did his very best to soften it.
Eventually, Ada seemed to pluck up the courage needed in order to face him. Walking very slowly, she peeked around the corner before moving further in front of him.
"It is long past your shift hours. What might you be doing here?" he asked.
Eyes refusing to meet his, the maid fidgeted in place for a few seconds before finally opening her mouth, "I’ve been searching for you, Master,"
That certainly took him aback, but he allowed none of it to transpire on his features, "And what is it you need from me?"
"I...," her voice trembled more than her figure, "It is about her," her irises rose from the floor but went straight past him, towards Arabella’s room.
"Speak,"
"I am sure the incident that took place earlier was reported to you and I assure you I meant nothi-"
An eyebrow raised up his forehead, Silas cut her off, "What incident?"
Ada appeared stunned but only momentarily before finding her words again, "Well, it happened a few hours ago. I couldn’t wait until morning before seeing her and I ran up to her room," she marked a pause during which her eyes gathered the will to lock onto his, "I know what the doctor that examined her claimed, but I know he is wrong," she immediately shook her head before correcting herself, "At least he was, but something changed it,"
"Care to elaborate in a way that makes sense,"
Throughout her entire speech, Silas never flinched, offering his signature glare that would usually be enough to deter any gaze, but not that time around, "Arabella was marked before her return,"
Those words on the other hand, got more reaction out of him than anything that had been said to him up until that moment. Even his head tilted a tad.
"Where do you get such bold ideas from?"
"When I got into her room, I immediately noticed that something was the matter with her. She was very calm, smiling and she even tried to reassure me kindly," her head slowly went from left to right as though distrusting the possibility of her last words being true.
"Kindness is in her nature," he stated.
"Concealing her distress never was," Ada stared blankly at him, clearly knowing full well just how right she was, "The Arabella I’ve spent days with would have been shivering and fighting with all of her might to reel her tears in. That one, the one that met me when I went through her door was nowhere near close to her natural behavior,"
"She still refuses to leave her bathtub. That seems like quiet suffering to me," he said.
"Yes! Now she is back," she gave energetic nods along with her words, putting great emphasis on the word now, "But only After ingesting the tea that contained your blood, Master. That was when the real Arabella fully returned," both of her fists went up and down as though they’d somehow hammer her point in.
"I won’t entirely dismiss your sayings, but you will understand why I migh-"
Ada dared cut him off, "She spoke of the moon and how she’d love to sit for hours in order to admire it!"
He’d lied. Silas had been about to dismiss her ideas altogether. However, the mention of the moon made him stop to reconsider.
The vampire kept quiet and waited for more of the tale that would certainly come.
"I know she wasn’t bitten, but I know as a human that there are other means in which to introduce poison into someone’s body. I am adamant that Arabella was marked by the Alpha through another way, but...," she trailed off momentarily, "I think that your blood somehow cured her from it,"
