Chapter 168: Marked

Had anybody been standing behind the door, the sheer force from the collision when Ada burst through it would have been enough to knock the lights right out of them.

With more tears than water in her body, the maid practically threw herself on Arabella, bending down to nestle her face into her chest which muffled her dire sobs.

"Oh, dear Lord, Ada! Are you alright?" Arabella had asked sweetly.

The young woman had already washed up and slipped into a sleeping gown, getting ready for some much-needed rest.

She stood there, patting the maid’s hair in the hopes that it would soothe her.

"I am the one who’s supposed to ask you that question!" Ada wailed even harder, looking up at Arabella, "I thought... I thought I...," after many attempts, Ada’s vocal cords failed to complete that sentence.

However, Arabella had managed to guess the intention behind it, "But you didn’t lose me and here I am with you," the young woman smiled while slowly shaking her head from left to right.

"I don’t know what would have become of me if anything had happened to you," still clinging to Arabella, Ada loosened her hold around her middle.

"Nothing happened to me and all is fine now," Arabella looked Ada in the eyes while speaking.

There was something in her own eyes. Something in her tone as well that was so strange, Ada immediately picked up on it.

"How can you be so calm about all of this?"

Indeed, the Arabella she knew would have at least been shaken by the recent events, but the version standing before her was as serene as a pond.

It was as though her favorite cup had been broken in lieu of the true madness that had occurred.

Ada even wondered and started questioning her own sanity. Had she heard things right? Was the information communicated to her wrong or blown out of proportion?

To her knowledge, Arabella had been abducted after an attack on the party and then taken by the Alpha who refused to set her free until the Master agreed to a duel.

"Much worse could have happened. There is always worse," Arabella kept that ghostly smile on her that sowed a cold sense of dread in Ada.

"What?"

At that point, Ada was merely muttering.

"Yes, but... Wha...," at a complete loss of words she was. Unable to align a single statement or question.

"None of that, now," Arabella’s soft hands went and cupped Ada’s cheeks, "It’s all in the past. Let us live in the present. Come, bring a chair, let us admire the beautiful moon together,"

Ada’s eyes immediately started flickering between Arabella’s eyes and the moon through the window that stood behind their connected figures.

"The moon, you say?"

Then as though struck across her face, Ada’s features froze in place, rendering the emptiest of expressions as a bone chilling realization seemed to dawn on her.

The maid gradually straightened her posture before putting an end to the moment of peace that had followed that action as Ada began to frantically inspect Arabella’s entire body, pulling at the night gown to expose her shoulders then legs and arms.

"Where is it? Show me it! It can still be reversed but we... We must be quick!" she vomited all of those words at once, her breathing growing strained.

"Ada, please. What has gotten into you?"

Arabella’s state, on the other hand, was in stark contrast from Ada’s. Standing in place, a little taken aback by Ada’s outburst, but smiling, nonetheless.

"What is the meaning of this? What do you think you are doing, human?"

Katherine’s voice caused Ada to pause her ravings and spin around, "It’s... She’s... She’s been bitten! It’s taking effect, she’s practically confessed to me that she wants to run and howl at the moon!"

"Calm yourself!" a little sterner, Katherine walked closer to the jittery maid.

"I can’t! I am telling you! She’s been marked! Look at her! She’s barely even reacting!" Ada cried, pointing at Arabella.

True that was. Arabella stood in her spot, watching the scene unfold as if an invisible screen tricked her into believing it was all an act, and that there was nothing to worry about.

"That is inconceivable," Katherine settled the tray she carried down on the table in order to put a hand up, "The doctor has already inspected her entire body and there are no bite marks on her,"

Katherine had barely even finished her sentence that Ada launched into more gushing, "Then summon a witch! She’d be able to tell! I mean please, look at her! She is way too calm, and she barely even reacts to anything!"

"Alright! That is enough! let us all calm down for the time being," Katherine then addressed Arabella, "Please, drink this tea. It contains the Master’s blood. It’s for the injury you’ve sustained," she then brought her attention back onto Ada, "Wolf folk only mark their human mates through a bite and as I stated it before, Arabella has not been bitten,"

"Come now! It is Alpha Cynric we speak of, we’ve all heard so much about him. You wouldn’t be as daft as to believe he’d simply let her go without a fight like they claim!"

"How dare you?" Katherine growled.

Ada gasped at her own nerve. However, before the vampiress could chastise her any further, a new sound disrupted their dynamic.

That of porcelain shattering against the cold, hard floor beneath their feet.

Both turned to find a trembling Arabella who needed to grip the edges of the table in order to stand, hyperventilating to save every breath.

Ada rushed to her side, but Katherine reached the young woman faster before scolding the maid, "Are you proud of yourself now? Leave this room at once!"

Ada stood frozen, glancing between Arabella’s terrorized eyes and the teacup that hit the floor.

"Do you not see the distress you’ve caused? Leave right this second before I make you!"

Snapping out of her trance, Ada finally unrooted her feet from their spot and ran out, tears still streaming down her face.
