Chapter 581: To move on

That little ruffian refused to leave Arabella’s side long until after dark. Silas gave them their space to just be and retreated back into the manor like Abigail did before him.

Only from time to time, he’d cast an ear out to watch over them...

Throughout doing so, he caught snippets of their conversations. Many of which revolved around Allegra and her adapting to the environment of the caverns as well as the wolf people.

Other than that, the vampire simply savored the hint of joy in Arabella’s voice as her exchange with the child went on.

Overall, her glee and ease to share time with Remus was more than understandable considering... Well, he seemed to be the only one who did not look at her with pity riddled eyes. Hell, the first thing he ever said to her was that he knew she’d be back instead of crying in her arms about how he feared never seeing her again.

Inside, however, his attention turned towards the heartbeat coming from the main lounge room.

Right by one of the windows, Persephone was posted, watching through it as though expecting someone to show.

Technically, they all expected someone to do so since Edgar and Ada still had not returned from the errand she needed to fulfil.

"How are you holding up?" she did not turn around to ask the question.

"Fairly well," he started, walking closer to his mother, "Please, find solace in the fact that I have no memory of my suffering as for once I was actually asleep,"

"I do not think what you went through is the same as what the rest of us know as sleeping, dear," through their reflections in the window glass, their eyes connected.

Silas pushed a heavy sigh and leaped onto a different topic altogether, "For what it’s worth, Allegra is alright, mother. However, if I am being honest, I myself still cannot wrap my head around everything that’s been happening with her and so, I advise you to speak to either Arabella on the matter," After a short pause, he added, "Or you may wait to see Allegra. She’s sent a message with the boy. An invitation to you as well as my wife,"

"That is really good to hear," she nodded, "I will enquire about the details as soon as the opportunity to smiles in my face, but for now, I’d rather let the girl breathe,"

"Also, during my meeting with Mingan and Grishnak today, I did receive word that Edgar and Ada have finally crossed the border. They should arrive in a few hours from now or early in the morning,"

There was no visible reaction on her, but audibly, Silas caught the slight shift in the rhythm of her heart.

"Well... That’s a relief," the little breath in between the words told it all, "They always got along, those too, didn’t they? I suppose this ordeal allowed them to see things more clearly,"

"Edgar is in love with you, mother," he just unleashed those words on her and watched her eyes widen.

Her neck damn near snapped seeing the quick spin her head did, "Where do you go seeking such-"

"He’s told me himself," again with the flat tone and point-blank stare.

Persephone’s gaze fell on her hand, namely on the silver looking rings around her graceful fingers, "Don’t be silly, darling. The man only has decades, and I could never have him waste such precious time on me,"

"I saw father as well during the time I spent unconscious,"

Once anew, her head snapped up, but that time around, her entire body spun to face Silas.

Her mouth hung open, the words to express her clear shock betraying her.

"Among all of the interesting things he’s told me, particularly, one of them stood out from the lot," he maintained eye contact while her eyes flickered away at times.

"And... What is it that he said?" Persephone once calm and gracefully seemed to have lost those virtues as her voice cracked several times throughout her question.

"Arabella won’t age for as long as she keeps ingesting blood, won’t she?"

That made her break eye contact at once, the tears threatening to escape her hold.

"You knew it and yet refused to tell me. In fact, I remember very clearly your words about how I should find a different muse because this one is human...,"

In the end, the vampiress sighed, looked down and marched towards her usual sitting spot, "Aside from Morgana, the doctors and me, only your father knew about it. So, if they did not tell you then I must resign to accept that what you had was no mere dream... You truly saw your father," after a moment, she continued, "I truly am sorry for keeping it from you, but you must understand that we had nothing but the best intentions towards you,"

"That I already know, mother," he took the seat right next to hers, "I am not here to blame you for it. I merely brought it up as a reminder that Edgar can live and be by your side for far longer than decades,"

"I could never do that!" she refused to look him in the eyes.

"Do what? Be happy with someone you love," he half asked, still in the flattest of tones.

"I could never use you like that," her spine was straight, but her voice... Not so much.

"Please, never say that again," the words came out with more passion than he intended. After clearing his throat, he added, "Father is very much alright with it. He was the one to even suggest it in the first place,"

Persephone smiled. Really smiled from the heart. Not as an attempt at courtesy like she usually did when the words weren’t enough to convey a feeling.

"Emeric is alright, isn’t he? He is no pain where he is," her voice shook without her trying to maintain any control over it that time around.

"He is just dandy, mother," for once, Silas chose to return her sweet smile, "He’s moved on and so should you. He wanted you to know as much,"
