Chapter 580: An unthreatening threat.

The horizon announced the end of the day by bathing that side of the world in its golden light. While waiting for the moon to shine at its brightest, Arabella took a moment away from everyone and marched through the garden.

Well, almost everyone as Abigail trailed behind her, following her delicate pace and making sure not to disrupt her peace.

Arabella needn’t be a mind reader to know what went through everyone’s head about her. The way they tiptoed around as though her bones would shatter with the weakest of breezes to blow was more than obvious and more importantly, irritating.

The sun had just kissed the horizon line when the women stepped out of the rose hedges only to stop upon hearing shrieks...

Familiar little yelps coming from the direction of the tall trees surrounding the property.

"Oh, dear, is that...?" Abigail started, a hand over her mouth.

"That is Remus alright!" for the first time in a long week, Arabella’s features allowed a smile from the heart. One she did not have to fight in order to put on display.

The wolf boy dashed towards her from a distance, showing not a single sign of slowing down.

"He’s not stopping, is he?" Abigail let out an awkward chuckle while reaching for Arabella’s arm.

"He will," the young woman stood in place, missing not a crumb of that sight.

Throughout his run, Remus did not blink once as if the air hitting his eyeballs was nothing. His mouth too did not close all the way.

"Perhaps we should get out of the way," Abigail chuckled nervously again, tugging a little harder at Arabella’s arm.

"Don’t you worry. He always stops when he’s near,"

Arabella reassured her and braced for their usual hug, but as the distance between them shrunk, it became harder to ignore the signs...

Once only a few inches away, instead of carrying on as was his habit of doing, the boy jumped off the ground and prepared to land right in her arms. Except... Receiving Remus’ full weight onto her human body would have been the equivalent of being crushed by a child sized boulder due to the differences that made their biology.

"Oh Lord! Out of the way!" Abigail squeaked, tugging at her arm.

But Arabella froze in place, arms wide open thinking to herself... Well, life wasn’t as nice as it could have been, but she still had a good run while it lasted.

Thankfully, Silas came right on time to save his wife from the grizzly death that was sure to occur without his intervention.

From the fur on his neck he clutched the boy, stopping him dead in the air.

"Let me go!" Remus cried, kicking and screaming to no avail as his arms and legs flailed helplessly.

"Are you trying to kill my wife, wolf?" Silas asked firmly, making not another motion.

"Oh...," Remus’ entire body froze, mouth wide open and eyes threatening to leap out of their sockets, "I... I forgot... Please forgive me," the shock on his flushed face crumpled into a devastating frown topped with running tears, "I would never want to hurt you," his arms reached for her.

Arabella walked forward, eyes on her husband, "He did not mean it. Please just release him,"

She had gathered the might and air in her lungs to argue Silas’ next point on how the boy wasn’t to be trusted, but as it turned out, there was no need for any of it.

Silas merely settled Remus back on his feet without roughing him. He did not even try to interfere when the wolf took off running towards her again.

It seemed Remus had been well reminded though as he stopped right before colliding with her and, very carefully, wrapped his little arms around her middle.

Behind her back, Abigail cleared her throat and squeaked, "I will go see if I am needed in the manor,"

Without waiting for a response, she turned around and left.

Arabella only spared her a glance, but the words of acknowledgement never followed, Remus just hogged all of her attention by smooshing and rubbing his face all over her velvet dress.

All the while Silas simply watched without commenting a single time. Although, his features turned weak at the sight and allowed the faintest of smirks through.

"I knew you would come back and here you are!" he peered up at her, hands still clutching at the back of her dress.

"I knew I had to come back because I promised you to, didn’t I?" she chirped.

"You did! And father was with you too, so I was not worried at all," he finally let go of her.

"I was with her too, you know," Silas’ voice was not cold per se, but there was a new sort of edge to it as he spoke those words.

"Yes, but father is reliable," Remus did not even turn around to address him.

That must have hurt his ego, but what to do about it? That came out the mouth of an innocent child who did not know any better.

The vampire only shut his eyes and shook his head at the blatant verbal thrashing the boy had just subjected him to.

That was progress of its own. A month or so before that, he’d have matched the kid in terms of childishness...

"Remus, do tell me, please, I left one of my dear friends under the care of your father. Did you meet her?" Arabella bent a little forward to be closer to his height.

"Oh, yes! The vampiress Allegra!" his eyes lit up, "I’ve met her," he nodded profusely.

"How has she been since yesterday? Is she needing anything?" she asked, looking between her husband and the boy, knowing full well that Silas was dying to enquire about Allegra but did not dare.

"No! Ayyura is very angry about her being there though since father hasn’t left her side at all," he shook his head, "From what I’ve observed, it seemed she likes it in the caverns, and she hasn’t gone out of her mind on a slaughtering spree yet so there is that,"

Right! He still could not tell the difference between a pregnant vampire and otherwise.
