Urban LitRPG System-Chapter 60: Jeanne d’Arc. (1/2)
A serious professor entered the class, he was wearing a blue suit and golden-rim glasses, aside from himself this was the most German-looking person Max had ever seen, blonde hair neatly combed back and sharp green eyes that scanned the whole room in one sweep like he was measuring everyone in seconds. He walked straight to the stage without greeting anyone first, shoes hitting the wooden floor with clean, firm steps.
" Welcome, my name is Ludwig, you can call me Professor Ludwig or Doctor Ludwig, I will teach you Anatomy and a Doctor’s First Aid, download this PDF using this QR or link, and we will start with basics of Anatomy "
Ludwig didn’t waste time, he came in and started the lecture immediately, no small talk, no jokes, just straight into teaching, his voice clear and heavy enough to fill the entire hall without a microphone. Max saw everyone was very serious about learning, unlike high school where students were talking and fooling around, people here sat straight, typing or writing quietly, pages scrolling, keyboards clicking softly, there was barely any noise, which made him very grateful for being here.
Max concentrated on his studies and it ended soon, he didn’t even notice when the 80 minutes passed, the class still had 10 minutes left and Max had typed over a thousand words in notes, fingers moving quickly across the keyboard, eyes not leaving the board.
Wish I was better at typing.
Max glanced sideways and saw Jeanne typing steadily beside him, her fingers moving fast and precise, posture straight, eyes fixed on the screen without distraction, he saw her word count on the page, she had written over three thousand words already, then she looked at him and smiled slightly like it was nothing.
" So, I see many of you felt bored during the class, I can guess you’ve already studied these basics, we’ll do a short written quiz to see how far each of those individuals are and shift our teaching speed in the class "
Max was taken aback hearing this, there were students who had learned this already? He looked back and saw a few students immediately opening their laptops and tablets, screens lighting up, already prepared for the quiz, even Jeanne was like this, calm but ready.
So, I was not prepared enough? So that’s why the system was trying to get me to study?
" Those of you who just went with basics today can excuse yourselves, do your assignment, this quiz is only for those who have studied in advance, to let me know how far they are and you are, so I can plan accordingly "
Ludwig erased the board cleanly with the whiteboard eraser while telling people like Max to get out, the marker lines disappearing in one sweep, and Max stood up quietly, no complaints, no hesitation, already planning his next step, he got the book and a few Chapters ready in his Mac, understanding this was university and no one would force you to study or guide you like in high school, you had to study on your own to decide your own future.
Max stood up, he had to practice typing and study, he didn’t expect Jeanne to stand beside him as well, he thought she was going to take the quiz, but she simply closed her laptop and rose at the same time, stepping into the aisle next to him since the seats and desks were fixed in place.
She stopped close beside him without saying anything, almost shoulder to shoulder in the narrow space, her sleeve lightly brushing his arm as they waited for others to pass. He glanced at her for a second, confused, but she just held her laptop against her chest like it was natural to leave with him. He looked back toward Finn, who looked at him and smiled, then looked at his computer again, fingers already on the keyboard, posture straight, he was eager to take the quiz as well.
So, he’s just a little dumb socially, otherwise, he’s a good student? Well, makes sense, he’s in LMU Medical department after all.
" Take the test, so that I can understand more from you next time "
Max smiled and nodded his head toward Finn, who straightened up and gave him a quick salute like a soldier on a mission, face suddenly serious, fingers already returning to the keyboard, he got it.
Max then looked at Jeanne, who was smiling at him but she didn’t look happy at all, her lips curved but her eyes stayed flat, she was a weirdo but more good than bad, even a good-looking weirdo looks cute standing this close.
" If I tell you to take the quiz, will you... "
" Nope, I am following you out "
" Suit yourself "
Max couldn’t help but chuckle, he took his backpack, slid the strap over one shoulder, picked up his laptop, and exited the classroom through the aisle, Jeanne also followed him from behind, but with his longer strides he naturally walked faster, and she had to almost jog to keep up, steps quick and light, so Max noticed and slowed down without saying anything, matching her pace.
" Why? "
" I think, I love you "
" You don’t love me, this is the second time today I’ve had to say it out loud, this is weird "
" Second? Someone else also said it to you? "
" Yeah... you wanna have some chocolate milk? "
Max walked ahead and exited the university building, the glass doors sliding open, warm air hitting his face, Jeanne following beside him now instead of behind, close enough that their arms almost brushed with each step, it looked like his every word amused her, she nodded her head when Max asked her this question in front of a café.
The day was a little hot and he was thirsty, he didn’t know why, he suddenly wanted chocolate milk, which was written on a cute little banner just outside the café for advertising, the picture of a cold bottle covered in water drops catching his eye.
Max and Jeanne sat at a small table near the café window, the chairs metal and light, the table barely big enough for two trays, students walking past them with drinks and books, sunlight slipping through the glass and landing across the wood surface.
" My family is from France, I’ve two more sisters but marrying in the family is not allowed, I will not allow it "
Max went ahead and ordered two ice chocolate milks and two small cakes, sliding the tray back carefully with one hand, his body demanded high calorie food as it burned more nowadays, so he needed to refill himself from time to time, the cold bottle already sweating in his palm, but he was not prepared for the weird thing that came out of Jeanne’s mouth.
" What?!! "
" I said, I will not allow you to marry one of my sisters, in d’Arc family it’s not allowed "
She said it like it was some official rule, elbows resting on the table, fingers folded together, staring straight at him without blinking, like they were already discussing marriage contracts instead of first-day classes.
" Sigh! Let’s see, I don’t want to marry you "
