Chapter 57: Adrian’s Base

Friendship? Fuck that... it was the Apocalypse.

Nobody gave a damn about what friendship entailed in this new world, and neither did Simon.

Sure, there was a faint twinge of guilt for betraying her trust like that, but it was quickly snuffed out by the prospect of survival, power, and everything that came with it.

It had already been proven time and time again: kindness was a weakness. Even if he tried to be understanding, even if he tried to build bridges, there would always be people who wouldn’t hesitate to stab him in the back the moment it suited them.

If people like that thrived in this world, why the hell should he be kind?

Besides, raiding Adrian’s base promised too many benefits to ignore. The operation was risky, sure, but the rewards — oh, the rewards — were worth it. If he could eliminate everyone who sought refuge there, he’d jump through the rankings like wildfire.

Any boost helped in this brutal, cutthroat system. Maybe he’d even crack the Top 10. That was the dream, after all.

To become one of the top ten among billions? That wasn’t just pride; that was influence. That was power.

That was the kind of reputation that could reshape how people saw you, even in a world this broken. And if he played his cards right, he could establish a guild of his own, like Adrian.

But for now, Simon preferred to move solo. Less baggage, fewer betrayals.

His eyes flicked back to Rita. She was still on her knees, trembling, her hands clutching at the floor as if it might steady her in the chaos.

Her emotions were at a breaking point — fear, anger, humiliation all swirled together, etched plainly across her face. He’d trusted her once, maybe even considered her a friend in the old world. But this wasn’t the old world.

’She’s weak,’ he thought, watching the rise and fall of her shoulders as she fought to regain control.

Yet, he couldn’t deny the flicker of something else in her eyes. Resentment, perhaps? Or defiance? Whatever it was, it didn’t matter. She’d trusted him, and this was where that trust had brought her.

Simon loomed over her, his shadow swallowing her frail form. Rita looked up at him, her tear-streaked face a mixture of hatred and defeat.

Their eyes locked, and in that moment, there was an unspoken understanding. She knew what he wanted.

With trembling fingers, she summoned her interface, reluctant.

Finally, she stopped scrolling , the map appearing before her. She spun it around and showed Simon, her hands shaking so badly.

"So that’s the location," Simon muttered, leaning closer to examine the screen.

He noted the coordinates and the surrounding terrain with practiced efficiency.

It wasn’t far from here, but it wasn’t going to be easy. Adrian’s base wasn’t the kind of place you could just stroll into. He’d need more supplies, more firepower.

There was no way they’d only have two guards posted; Adrian was smarter than that.

"That’s good," he said, stepping back. He slipped the pistol into his belt, his demeanor shifting slightly. For a moment, he almost looked... pleased. "Alright, let’s stock up. We’ll raid tonight."

Rita stared at him, her face pale, her lips trembling as she tried to find the words.

"Why? Why are you doing this?" Her voice cracked, a broken whisper that carried the weight of betrayal.

Simon paused, his back still turned to her. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he tilted his head slightly, as if considering her question.

Finally, he spoke, his voice low and steady. "Because kindness doesn’t get you anywhere anymore. You’ll understand that one day."

"No," Rita said, louder this time, her voice fueled by a flicker of anger. "You don’t have to do this. You don’t have to do all of this."

Simon turned to face her, his expression unreadable. For a fleeting moment, something crossed his face — regret? Doubt? It was gone before she could be sure.

"Survival changes people," he said simply. "It’s not about what you want anymore. It’s about what you’re willing to do."

He didn’t wait for her response. Instead, he walked away, leaving her kneeling on the cold, dusty floor.

"You guys should be here," He said, "I’ll be back by tonight, then we can head in the direction of the base, If you dare try to leave, I’ll find you... and you won’t be so lucky next time,"

Each step echoed like a hammer blow, a grim reminder of what this world had become.

Rita remained where she was, her fingers clutching the tablet tightly. Tears streamed silently down her face as she watched him go.

Leo limped over to her, his face a little bit disgruntled but at least he was alive. He knelt beside Rita, his voice soft but urgent. "Are you okay?"

She didn’t respond immediately.

Her eyes were fixed on the door Simon had disappeared through. Finally, she wiped her tears and turned to Leo. "We can’t let him do this."

Leo frowned. "How? You saw him. He’s... he’s not someone we can stop. Not like this."

Rita’s jaw tightened. For the first time since Simon’s betrayal, the trembling in her hands ceased. "Then we find a way. He’s wrong. Kindness might not be enough, but if we let people like him take over, what’s the point of surviving at all?"

"Is Adrian much different?" He asked, settling down on the ground. These words caused Rita to stop in an instant... Adrian was even worse in this regard, he had called the entire world and it was a threat, if they weren’t with Adrian, they were against him yet planning to raid his base?

They had to question if Simon was sick in the head or perhaps he had hit his head far too many times, it was just too insane but his threat still loomed and with the way he could kill them at a moment’s notice... they wouldn’t dare disobey it.

Not at all.
