Chapter 74: Another Hybrid?

Simon didn’t lower his gun, his eyes narrowing at the figure as they stepped closer, their polished shoes clicking against the concrete floor.

The firelight from the smoldering barrels cast long shadows across their face, highlighting sharp features and an unsettling calm.

"You have my attention," Simon said flatly, his tone cutting through the smoky air. "Start talking before I put a hole in your head."

The figure chuckled, a low, almost amused sound. "Straight to the point. I like that about you, Simon. Efficiency. Precision. A man after my own heart."

Simon tilted his head slightly, his grip on the gun unwavering. "You’re wasting my time."

"Am I?" the figure countered, raising an eyebrow. "You’ve caused quite a stir tonight. This little... fireworks display. It’s impressive, truly. But you’ve also made enemies — powerful ones. They’ll come for you, sooner or later. Unless, of course, you’re willing to entertain a proposition."

Simon didn’t flinch, though the word proposition pricked at his curiosity. "What kind of proposition?"

The figure smiled, their teeth unnervingly perfect. "Simple. Join us. With your talents, you’d be an invaluable asset. Power, resources, protection — all yours for the taking. All you have to do is say yes."

Simon stared at them, his expression unreadable. He had heard offers like this before, promises of wealth and security in exchange for his loyalty.

They always came with strings attached, and Simon wasn’t one for leashes.

"Tempting," he said coolly. "But I’m not the leash-wearing type."

The figure’s smile faltered, their expression darkening. "A shame. I was hoping you’d see reason."

Simon’s instincts flared, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. Something wasn’t right. The air seemed to grow heavier, the figure’s calm demeanor shifting into something far more menacing.

"Last chance," Simon warned, his voice low. "Walk away, or this ends badly for you."

The figure tilted their head, their smile returning — but this time, it was twisted, almost predatory. "Oh, Simon. It’s not me you should be worried about."

Before Simon could react, the figure’s body convulsed, their arms jerking at unnatural angles. A sickening crack filled the air as their spine twisted, their shoulders hunching forward.

Their skin darkened, turning an ashen gray, and their fingers elongated into claw-like appendages.

Simon took a step back, his gun trained on the figure as they transformed before his eyes.

"Figures," he muttered under his breath.

When the figure straightened again, they were no longer human. Their once-sharp features had morphed into something grotesque, their face elongated and their jaw lined with jagged, uneven teeth.

Their eyes glowed with an eerie, unnatural light, intelligence gleaming behind the monstrous visage.

The hybrid let out a low growl, a sound that rumbled deep in its chest. It locked eyes with Simon, a flicker of recognition passing through its gaze — as if it still retained some memory of who it once was.

Simon didn’t wait for it to make the first move. He fired, the shot ringing out and hitting the creature square in the chest. But instead of falling, the hybrid staggered back, its claws scraping against the concrete as it steadied itself.

The wound bled, but the creature didn’t seem fazed.

"Great," Simon muttered, firing again.

This time, the hybrid dodged, moving with a speed that defied its hulking form. It lunged at Simon, its claws swiping through the air with deadly precision.

Simon rolled out of the way, narrowly avoiding the attack as the creature’s claws gouged deep marks into the floor.

Simon scrambled to his feet, his mind racing. The hybrid was fast — too fast for a straightforward fight. He needed to outmaneuver it, to find a way to exploit its weaknesses.

The creature lunged again, and Simon ducked behind a stack of crates, using them as cover. The hybrid’s claws tore through the wood as if it were paper, splinters flying in all directions.

Simon retaliated with a well-aimed shot, the bullet striking the creature’s shoulder and causing it to howl in pain. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

But the hybrid was relentless. It swiped at Simon with its other arm, forcing him to retreat further into the warehouse.

The flickering lights cast eerie shadows across the walls, the creature’s movements distorted and monstrous.

Simon’s breathing was steady, but his heart pounded in his chest. He fired again, aiming for the creature’s legs in an attempt to slow it down. The bullet hit its mark, and the hybrid stumbled, its growl turning into an enraged roar.

"You don’t like that, do you?" Simon said, his voice laced with sarcasm as he reloaded.

The hybrid didn’t respond, its glowing eyes fixed on Simon with an intensity that sent a chill down his spine.

It charged again, its movements more erratic but no less dangerous. Simon ducked and weaved, using the warehouse’s layout to his advantage.

He knocked over a stack of barrels in the creature’s path, forcing it to slow down as it barreled through the debris.

But the hybrid’s resilience was staggering — it seemed to feed off the chaos, its strength and speed undiminished.

Simon’s mind raced as he considered his options. He couldn’t keep this up forever; the creature was wearing him down, and his ammo was running low.

The hybrid lunged again, its claws slicing through the air. Simon dodged, but the creature’s attack grazed his side, tearing through his jacket and leaving a shallow wound.

He hissed in pain but didn’t let it slow him down.

"Persistent little thing, aren’t you?" he muttered, backing toward the exit.

The hybrid followed, its movements predatory and deliberate. It seemed to sense that Simon was planning to retreat, and it wasn’t about to let him escape easily.

Simon fired one last shot, the bullet grazing the creature’s temple and causing it to recoil. It was just enough of a distraction for Simon to make his move.

He sprinted toward the exit, dodging the hybrid’s claws as it swiped at him.

However before he could even manage to reach the exit, he had to dodge a ball of acid aimed at him... slamming against the door and melting it.
